Found a silly little fake crt toy. It’s a GE Shoe and Tell. It has a (broken) record player on top and a (working) rear slide projector meant to display images in time to the record.

I was rummaging through a big bin of VHS tapes for a while at a flea market yesterday, and eventually the guy who ran the booth walked over and said hey I’ll give you all of those for twenty bucks so I got like 100+ VHS tapes yesterday.

I was supposed to be looking for a chair lol

I am living by myself for the first time in a long time, and I think that’s resulted in me really leaning into the collector’s mindset. It felt so good to alphabetize them and expunge the cursed ones (surprisingly few!) that I don’t want around.

I know I may regret asking but I cannot help but ask what the cursed ones were! I can’t decide if they’re the normal kind of cursed (porn, home movies, etc) or some special other kind of cursed that I can’t think of.

I love to see VHS tapes going to a good home! I feel fortunate that when I last moved I was able to give all of our old tapes to a good friend who I know will watch them much more often than I have over the last 20 years!

Oh, good question! My definition of a cursed video tape, in this circumstance, would be ones that are primarily focused on Jesus, war or conservative thought that I don’t want and don’t even really want to put back into the secondhand ecosystem…

Let’s see, amongst the cursed pile we’ve got Gone with the Wind, John Wayne’s The Shootist, Charleston Heston presents the Bible, and a recruitment tape for Mormons.

Aha, that kind of cursed, I know exactly what you mean, and I completely agree about removing them from circulation! Thanks for satisfying my morbid curiosity!

It’s a reminder that good things can happen to you when you get extremely distracted by seeing a big pile of movies with Romeo Must Die, Snake Eyes and Scooby Doo on top lol

Oh, I didn’t know that one was iffy. Is it some Birth of a Nation level stuff? I bought a DVD at a thrift store last year because it was my grandma’s favorite movie and I was curious, haven’t bothered watching it yet though.

Very potent white supremacy and harmful handling of racial themes. Interestingly, they purposefully removed the KKK from the book version’s story, but the same actions happen, trying to gloss things over with good intentions I suppose.
