There is no truer statement for that Korean banana milk...

they still have the pull tab cans here. do they have them in Japan still too? as you can see, this is Kirin brand, though I suppose the drinks are probably canned locally.

I haven't left the country very often

If there were a Canada one, my level would be 26/65, or 70 if you count NL and Labrador separately.

@“connrrr”#p93712 this is a higher score than I‘d have for Canada. I’ve visited BC, and want to go everywhere else.

@“RubySunrise”#p93717 I was born there but don‘t remember it! Heard it’s nice, outside Abbotsford.

@“saddleblasters”#p93701 cool! i don‘t recall ever seeing one?? maybe once or twice, but they’re not common.

@“saddleblasters”#p92742 I was able to answer all the various barrages of questions necessary to set up a phone plan and apply for a bank account without anyone attempting to use English with me – but I suppose that makes me all the more conscious of how limited my ability to express myself is

Ok, a very bizarre variant of the above type of interaction just happened. I got my passport back the other day after applying for a long term visa, so I finally was able to set up the direct deposit details for my stipend. The guy who I had to talk to to do that was a very distinctly "uncle" feeling middle aged man. He'd taken his shoes off and had them sitting next to his desk. When I walked in he was very loudly complaining to the person in the desk next to him about someone who had entered the wrong ID number. He had me sit down, and it took maybe 5 minutes to finish everything. On the way out the guy next to him said "that was quick," and the uncle-feeling guy replied "yeah, this guy is smart -- he's not like those other students who need everything explained to them five times." My entire self worth is based on how smoothly my various transactions with strangers go, so after having dozens of interactions here where at the end I feel like the biggest idiot in the world, it felt like the fulfillment of some weird fantasy to hear this guy commend me for my ability to successfully give him my bank information.

@“saddleblasters”#p95423 man, i know exactly the feeling you‘re describing. good for you for nailing it. the fact that you’re doing it in Chinese just blows me away.

This probably won‘t be of much use to anyone here anytime soon, but this one podcast I like did an episode (which I haven’t listened to yet) about malls they went to as kids in 80s Beijing, and to go with it published this essay (which I did read) filled with pictures of Hufang Road department store, which apparently has barely changed in the last 40 years. Since this is the kind of stuff I like to look at when travelling I figured I‘d post it here. Once I listen to the episode I’ll probably mine their conversation for other old malls and department stores that are still operating and post it here in case anyone (including me) is ever in Beijing sometime.

Anyone traveling to the Midwest Gaming Classic?

has anyone been to mexico city and has good recommendations???

it's kinda Ironic that I'm asking this as probably the only person from mexico in here but I've never been there and I'm going with someone who has also never been. and i figure someone here may know something.

I have to take my university admission exam there (even though my program is online) so I'm using it as an excuse for a little trip.

I've asked a few irl friends but i figured some people here might have some cool recommendations??

so far my research has consisted of looking all the good vegan places cause the person who I'm going with happens to also be vegan and mexico city has like 20 times more vegan restaurants

The most memorable stuff for me is just all the great food and hanging in the big outdoor plazas and parks. I definitely would recommend checking out the museum of anthropology, it’s gigantic you could easily spend an entire day there. Museo Tamayo also had cool events happening a couple of different times I was there. Frikiplaza near the palacio de bellas artes is packed with used electronics and video game stuff if you’re interested a place like that.

@“穴”#p115507 I have no suggestions but would be cool to hear what you discovered while you were there!

I‘m going to Puerto Rico tomorrow, haven’t been in about 16 years. I have family there but they‘re only getting one day of time and the rest is stuff my partner and I wanna do lol. It’ll be nice to return to the ancestral country. Excited to eat a lot of fried food and pork. Will be my first time going to Vieques too which‘ll be really cool. Nervous to try flexing my Spanish but I’ve come a long way with lessons so hoping the basic interactions will be okay.

@“sabertoothalex”#p116776 please report back on Vieques! been kinda sorta planning a hiking/camping trip for a while. How are you getting there? Have a good trip saber

@“yeso”#p116791 Thank yeso!! We‘re taking a ferry from Ceiba across to Vieques and then you gotta rent a car to get around the rest of the island. I’m real excited for Vieques, it's the spot my fam recommended over and over again as the place Puerto Rican people love to go to get away.
