National Lampoon‘s Gamers was mentioned by Jeff Gerstmann ages ago.

Still very little information on it out there for something that was around for at least 2001-2006.

I just watched that whole new Fallout series, and it was … alright. I’ve certainly seen worse!

I don’t think it warrants the effort to go in to any sort of genuine critical analysis. There are obvious holes all through the plot, the writing is simultaneously lazy and overbearing at times, but that doesn’t really matter. The main thing going in its favour is that this show has avoided the main problem with most video game adaptions I’ve seen: most of them think that the source material is Too Dumb, and try to fix it and end up with something else that ends up being Even Dumber. This show just embraces that it is based on some Real Dumb Stuff and runs with it, and is the better for it I reckon.

There are lots of little winks-and-nods to things from the games, going all the way back to Wasteland – perhaps too many, really – and by the end I had a few crater-sized holes I had questions about… but ultimately, it was alright.

I probably would have let this one slide on by, but one of the pirate broadcast twitch channels I watch put it on so I sat there with some people in chat and we watched it and laughed with each other all the way through. Sometimes with the show, sometimes at it.

I am two episodes in and have never played the games even though I have watched a bunch of video essays on them. I am digging it as a violent Western Serial (the Ghoul being a former Western star leads me to feel this is a correct read). I did consider if I would tell my mom to watch it, but yeah you kind of DO have to be familiar with the source material for it to fully land.

I had a quick skim over the thread and didn’t see mention of the show I’m about to mention, but if I missed it please forgive me!

In Australia, our national broadcaster (ABC) produced a genuinely fantastic show about video games for about 13 years starting in 2006 named Good Game.

It was aimed at a fairly broad audience but was entertaining enough for me as a fairly intense game-liker that I tuned in every week and even made an event of it, often grabbing takeaway and watching it with a mate.
They’d do reviews of new releases, pieces on games history and the local development scene and a bunch of other stuff.
Speaking to a couple of people I know who like video games but don’t spend their days keeping up with new releases, it was an incredibly useful resource for finding out about new games and getting a good vibe about whether they might like it. Kind of a shame it had to end, though it has a spin-off show aimed at kids that’s still continuing and also has a bit of a web video presence too.

For a decade or so, Australian tax payer money was spent to produce a pretty damn fantastic show about video games and I think that rules.

I don’t know nothin about Fallout and I enjoyed the first episode a lot.
Feels like Leslie Knope getting dropped into the apocalypse, which is honestly a great setup for a show.

I finished watching the Fallout television show tonight. Had zero expectations or hype going in but I liked it. I’d probably watch the next season if that comes out. It’s goofy.

I don’t usually do this but I did find myself pointing and going ‘hey that’s like the game!’ a bit. So yeah I guess it’s a bit crazy coming from the early 2000s going ‘we aren’t ever getting another one of these games again’ post-Fallout 2 to a tv show that’s popular (?) in 2024.

Just heard about this one. Very difficult to search for, for obvious reasons.

I tried again to find this play-by-phone Xenon segment from Get Fresh but only found a segment called Get Mucky where two kids compete playing Xenon (or Starglider). The loser’s friend gets gunged.

I also couldn’t find an upload of Motormouth with the Weird Dreams phone-in but there’s this Weird Dreams quiz.

Eventually I did find a Motormouth play-by-phone segment with Magic Pockets. Digital Eclipse need to make a Bitmap Brothers Collection with enhanced versions of Xenon and Magic Pockets that use this footage.
