Video Essay Recommendations

@“Syzygy”#p55658 Really enjoyed the Final Fantasy one of tgese he did. Also appreciated the added lyrics to the FF main theme from it.

Took a quick rundown of this thread, and two channels I didn't see mentioned were:

Core-A Gaming

Thor High Heels

Core-A gaming is a fighting game video essay channel that doesn't suck, mostly cause Gerald can actually makes videos that someone who isn't familiar with fighting games can understand.

Thor High Heels likes to take on looking at some of the weirder stuff in video games, which is why I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet. He seems to really focus on _aesthetics_ more than anything else.

Oh yeah, I'm also a [nakey jakey](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSdma21fnJzgmPodhC9SJ3g) fan. Nothing that really gets you to think too hard, but he's entertaining and not a secret alt-right women hating weirdo, which is all too common in the video gaming video essay corner of youtube.

@“goonbag”#p55708 hey man, I said quick lol. Not surprised tho, THH is great!

Very appreciative of THH for evangelizing the Evergrace OST (I’m pretty sure that channel is where I first heard it?)

Hazel made a super great video about cozy anime rpgs that came out today and it rules. i love her so much, she's got such a cozy vibe while simultaneously offering supremely insightful commentary

@“thumpus”#p55738 fuckin wish the Sleepy Time bear had their own game

This is probably on everyone‘s radar but Jeremy Parish's channel really helps to put classic games into perspective. He puts out a new video once a week and they’re usually 10-15 minutes. He essentially chronologically discusses games in a pleasant manner with some historical artifacts. Who knew how big of a deal Heiankyo Alien actually was!

damn, search says mathewmatosis hasn‘t come up. i’d recommend all of them, but i‘ll pick this’un.

@“thumpus”#p55738 watching this now and I had to pause just so I can express here how gorgeous Magical Vacation for GBA looks…I’m both surprised I’ve never heard of this game and delighted that there are still things like this I’ve yet to learn about

Sharing this although I haven‘t quite finished it because I think it’s an example of the video essay at its best:

(as the thumbnail implies, the subject is a little lewd, be forewarned!)

This strikes me as the sort of historical research regularly praised on the Video Game History Hour podcast, except the subject is a finished but unreleased early anime dub which has been mythologized to varying degrees over the course of decades (there IS a lost video game tangentially involved, though!). hazel - whose work I'd never encountered before - gets to the bottom of things by digging through the available evidence - stuff like contemporaneous usenet posts, news articles and press releases. The result is a compelling narrative about what occurred, a series of facts strung together with educated guesses based on the evidence. Good stuff!

@“copySave”#p55774

both inspired by video works, swan song and atari archive are also quite good!

@“bodydouble”#p20885 This is great! Really puts into perspective ‘wink’ how easy it is to take the arts for granted in the era of duplication. On this note I think Alan Watts provides similar reflections on the modern world and our loss of perspective to appreciate the universe around us:

@“Syzygy”#p56643 In what universe is Pepsiman more known for for the crappy PlayStation game than his glorious appearance in Fighting Vipers!? What!? I refuse to believe this. I’ll send my lawyers.

My beloved Darkmere and Insert Credit’s very own mascot Chuck Rock in the same video!? What a bargain!

@“pasquinelli”#p55051 anyway, i’m in some kind of mood today.

Three hours and thirty-five minutes later:

Well that’s depressing

I don't remember this guy ever being linked here before - incredible production value, straight-to-the-point no-nonsense narration, genuinely interesting historical information… Great stuff all around!
