So I need some advice: I‘m thinking for episode 3 about getting to the point by using Anor Londo to talk about Agency, Structure, Power, and Epistemology. I’m capturing footage from the earlier areas, so there‘s no reason I can’t go back and do them later. But this idea feels right and like it would build well off the first two episodes. So umm…should I do that?
@CidNight#33408 I would definitely say that you shouldn‘t feel beholden to the progression of the game for this series. I think the main driver should be the concept or sequence of concepts you want to explore–I don’t think people will be approaching this as a Let‘s Play and will probably have some familiarity with the game in question. I think 8-bit theory (which I linked above) actually does a really good job letting a specific thesis inform his analysis of the game in question each episode–I don’t know a heck of a lot about music theory (or anything, really) but this focused approach leaves me thinking I do by the end of each episode!
Trying to [spread the word](https://twitter.com/koybones/status/1403102016084316166?s=20)--I am pretty sure at _least_ one of my followers is not a bot lol
@kory#33413 Holy wow!
I just watched Ep 2, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Ep 1 was a good pilot, and had me thinking “yeah this is interesting and I'll check it out again” while Ep 2 now has me at “this is a thing I will make sure to follow”. So you're doing something right!

I say go for it. I think the value and enjoyment for me here, personally, is largely centered around the academic aspect rather than watching you do a "proper" Let's Play while talking about interesting things. If there is a section of the game and/or world that is a fit for whichever topic you want to cover, then I think you should go there and do that. There are more than enough "watch me play through Dark Souls!" videos out there already, but there certainly are not enough "allow me to present interesting scientific topics, using games as a touch point and anchor" ones.

@“rejj”#p33582 Wow! Thank you so much, that is really kind of you to say! I learned a lot in making the first video and so I think the second one is definitely tighter. I‘m hoping episode three will be even tighter. I’m pretty sure it's going to be fully scripted and cut, rather than having a big continuous playthrough part. This requires a lot more time in editing but makes for a stronger piece.
@“CidNight”#p33288 Maybe I missed this, but are you introducing your own name or handle during the videos? I think you should give the audience a name rather than just be the video game archeology guy
@“yeso”#p33733 I disagree, @“CidNight”#446 should just brand himself as the Angry Video Game Archaeologist or somesuch…
_he's gonna take us back to the past..._
@“yeso”#p33733 @“kory”#p33737 Boy this is a tough decision. I have thought a lot about this. Part of my decision making on this is actually a labor wrinkle. Theoretically, if I monetized the channel (I have no intention of doing that), I believe it would be in violation of my contract, which stipulates I'm not supposed to be paid for using skills similar to what I use for my job. Teaching about archaeology is pretty definitely certainly “skills similar.”
I'm actually thinking of this project as more of a research opportunity. I am a strong believer in radical and novel pedagogy - Starting a youtube channel to teach about archaeology is explicitly a way to teach non-archaeologists about archaeology in an approachable way. In addition, I have an idea that I might like to write about this whole process for a publication. There are journals that are specifically about pedagogy where I think that would be an interesting fit. What I probably need to do is talk to my university HR and possibly our media department and find out whether they feel it would be appropriate to openly share who I am, and perhaps even list my university affiliation and degree. Long story short - I'm not sure what to do!
An unlisted preview of Episode 3, just for you!

@“kory”#p33737 Angry Video Game Archaeologist or somesuch…
Cid at least consider a theme song, run it by HR if need be
@“yeso”#p33755 I’m going to reach out to the powers that be this week and pick their brains. I’d make a theme song if I had any particular musical talent.
@“CidNight”#p33759 I nominate @“billy”#201
@“CidNight”#p33747 really admire your dedication to that sword, buster
but seriously, I think the capra fight was the first encounter that nearly forced me to put the game down for good...I think I ended up sprinting to that weird little ledge in the upper back and exploiting that somehow. The second near game ending experience was I think Tomb of the Giants, where I couldn't see a gosh darn thing. I must have put it down for like 2-3 years at that point!
@“kory”#p33762 I hate the Capra demon so much. It feels like such RNG. And those damn dogs have no wind up animation, which is like antithetical to dark souls.
The Zweihander rules. It’s also dead simple and available from minute one, which is why I used it for this playthrough.
@“CidNight”#p33759 I'm just joking re scatalogical theme song but that will be an interesting conversation with the university. A real 2021 dilemma. Anyway you def have the AVGN beat wrt to the shirt game
@“yeso”#p33767 oh I have quite a few more ridiculously colorful shirts to show off
you ever play heaven's vault ? Just curious if you have a professional opinion on it
@“yeso”#p33794 I’d never even heard of this game until recently. The only reason I did is because the exactly one other video I could find on YouTube of “video game archaeology” was an archaeologist playing Heaven’s Vault. I don’t have a gaming pc though, I wonder if I can get it on console?
@“CidNight”#p33800 I think its on ps4 and switch as well. The premise of this game definitely interests me, especially from the linguistic angle. Not sure if I'll ever actually play it, but I would sure as heck watch a real life professional archaeologist school me on it.
