Video Game Tutorial Greatest (Timed) Hits

Post in-game tutorials, tutorial stages, and any ludonarratively awkward insertion of gameplay language into character dialogue or even narration itt.

Games that lean into the fourth wall obliteration and wear their gameiness with pride are also welcome.

Complain and celebrate in equal measure!!

I love when games do this!

I‘ve mentioned several times around the forum that despite my love for Pocky & Rocky, there’s a lot I dislike about Pocky & Rocky 2. One of the main things that keeps me from returning to the game with any frequency is right at the start, there‘s a tutorial segment that is UNBEARABLY long, taking a ridiculous amount of time to explain things like: pressing the D-Pad moves the character. This tutorial can be skipped, but only by selecting between a mandatory yes/no prompt. As you might imagine… For a style of game that demands quickly jumping into many play sessions, there’s going to be times where “yes” will accidentally be selected. If the tutorial starts, the only option is to sit through the entire eight-and-a-half minute ordeal (yes, I timed it) or to reset the console. Let me repeat this:

**The tutorial to _Pocky & Rocky 2_ is eight-and-a-half minutes long.** ---

This game is not nearly complicated enough to warrant a tutorial like this. It certainly isn't complicated enough to ask if players want to read a manual for eight full minutes at the start of every single play session. This also horribly disincentives co-op play – undoubtedly one of _Pocky & Rocky_'s greatest strengths – since a new player will likely see there's a tutorial and think it's worth sitting through. The experienced returning player will either just have to wait for eight-and-a-half minutes for their friend to be done or try and convince them it's not worth it. This happens every single time anyone wants to load up this game for another run. All this on top of the fact that the tutorial kind of sucks...!! I imagine it must be here because _Pocky & Rocky 2_ introduces a few new mechanics that the first game did not have, but even after the tutorial showing me that these mechanics exist, I didn't really understand their practicality or why I would engage with them. Only after a couple playthroughs of experimenting on my own did I see some benefits to them, but **_how many people will reach that point when this tutorial disincentives repeat playthroughs?_** It's horrible. _Pocky & Rocky 2_ is filled with weird, confusing little inconsiderate annoyances like this but the tutorial is one of the biggest offenders, and the only one every single player is guaranteed to see no matter how little they wind up playing.

@“Funbil”#p109748 oh wow, that‘s awful and nearly game-ruining sounds like. I wonder if there’s a romhack to uproot the tutorial entirely??

I always felt ambivalent about *Gitaroo Man*'s "Boogie for an Afternoon" tutorial level because while the track is a seriously sweet tune, it plays so slow in both difficulties.

I mean there is an option to skip it! It wouldn't even be that big of a deal if the selection started on "No" by default, but having it begin on "Yes" makes it too easy to select by accident when trying to start the game, as well as being an intense mood killer at the beginning of every single playthrough.

In Angelique, they tell you to use the blue button on the famicom controller to feel the expanse of the continent aka activate mode 7 :sunglasses:

oh god this reminds me of parappa 2's annoying jukebox son of a biscuit who you have to skip like every single time.

What was the game that was trying to explain something and then it was like “Well, imagine something like an X button” or something.

Was that also Mommy 3?

This one has the enjoyable double-whammy of being poorly voice-acted and poorly worded.

Lookit me, Mom, I'm causing my character to run forward!!
