I don’t know why you’re all being so mean, this metaverse stuff will be super useful during the 2020 lockdown.

I love this new Apple thing. The tech in the device is really mindboggling. I think it's pretty feasible that this could functionally completely replace a TV, as the pixel density should be high enough to look really nice at like a fake normal viewing distance of a large screen. What I love the most is how dumb it looks though. There is just no way anyone could seriously try to wear this in any kind of social situation without being made fun of.

I am skeptical of the hand tracking, and also I am skeptical of any kind of hand/motion based input like this. It looks super cool in Avengers but my subjective experience of interacting with stuff is that everything is better when it's tactile. Any tech that moves away from that just ends up being a less pleasant experience imo. There is a reason why things like virtual keyboards are not popular, or even why typing on a phone sucks. Waving your hands around in the air with _no_ feedback at all is just never going to feel good. Unless we get like haptic gloves or brain implants to simulate nerve impulses (no thanks) I just don't believe most people will like it. Especially in games, you have to _pretend_ to hold a gun or whatever?

I also think it will totally fall apart in sub-optimal conditions, like weird lighting and stuff. Does it work with all skin colours and textures? What about people with unusual hands? I can imagine many crazy glitches if it ends up being used in games, especially early on.

@“Kez”#p118648 this could functionally completely replace a TV

except it costs a lot more than a tv, and you can only watch it by yourself, and you have to put it on your head

@“yeso”#p118656 Yeah, I'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who has tried VR and thought “So I can just have a huge screen available in whatever space”, but the reality is the screen is garbage cause it only uses a small portion of the available pixels on the headset, and it is awkwardly scaled, etc. What I meant is, this may be the first device that could convincingly feel like watching a good TV.

I'll pick one up when the PS5 backpack adapter comes out.

@“yeso”#p118656 and you can only watch it by yourself

This is what bothered me about it. It seems like it would be very alienating and encourages isolation.

@“beets”#p118638 This. Years ago, probably oculus 1 era, a friend of mine was sharing a story about the huge turnoff of coming home to her current boyfriend ‘in’ VR. That image pops into my head whenever I see these.

I’m curious if Apple’s insane marketing capabilities are able to budge the needle on VR out of the “freaks and weirdos” camp.

@“safety_lite”#p118676 That does sound just yuck. Glad I have this thought though so I can avoid doing it.

@"Mnemogenic"#p118554 this is so exciting though! Now I know I could theoretically afford a 2004 Honda Accord.

My dad was really excited by this last night. He‘s been an Apple Boy since the 80’s. His plan to retire after we‘ve built our earthships and farm and he’s too old to work is to be in VR a lot of the time in his golden years…

this shit is 100% going to be used to edward g robinson in soylent green people

can you imagine your child seeing you on the couch wearing this goofy ass thing, your weird fake eyes staring blankly at them. fucking chilling

edit: (not directed at you, Froggy. I'm just hypothesizing over here)

3500 bucks represents more than 10% of my annual income so i‘m def not getting this but i do kind of wonder if this does anything re: motion sickness. my one-time experience with VR was that it made me so motion sick i thought i was gonna throw up for 3 hours afterwards. it was my first-time being motion sick in my life. i can read books in the car/bus/train, i’ve been on roller coasters, never felt more than a slight unsettled feeling that went away with a prolonged blink of the eyes. very eye-opening to finally be like “oh this is what people are talking about.”

AR seems like the kind of fun thing I‘d want to do at a theme park with a bunch of other friends. We all get in Go Karts and there’s all kinds of crazy stuff we can all see added to the space. Then when we're done we can go back to normal life.

Yo, I just had a thought: are the projected eyes on the front taken from internal cameras streaming your actual eyes or are they also an AI mock-up?

@“connrrr”#p118765 pretty sure they come from the 3D facial scan, so they'll be like the weird avatar you project in facetime.

@“exodus”#p118768 and your disembodied codec portrait will emote whether you want it to or not. I don't like this!!

on the other hand what's keeping you from scanning a latex mask or your head wrapped in elastic bands?

@“connrrr”#p118774 most people just aint cool enough.

@“connrrr”#p118765 @“exodus”#p118768 According to this article it’s a live feed of your actual eyes :flushed:. I also thought the same as Brandon.

It‘s this screen that will show a real-time view of your eyes (captured by the cameras inside the headset) to the outside world if you’re in augmented reality mode.
