They help unlock memories, not super crucial (afaik, folks are still finding things) but if you want to 100% everything they do unlock some lore
This might have been answered but is it possible to enjoy this thing if sokoban is one of your least favorite game types?
@exodus I think you can, yeah. In fact the sokoban thing is a bit of a PR move in the sense that you really don’t solve that many puzzles by actually pushing things.
The main mechanic is that you have a magical staff that allows you to remove (and save) one floor tile, and then put it in whichever free space you can reach. It personally reminds me more of Lode Runner than actual sokoban.
Then there is the overall mystery dungeon/adventure vibe the game has AND the fact that it’s very inspired by Cave Noire, a game I think you like. Also, the soundtrack is pretty stellar.
Given all that I think there’s a reasonable chance that you may like it
@exodus I would consider myself as someone who really doesn’t like sokoban and I was able to have a good time. Some of the puzzles frustrated me, but that’s mostly because puzzle games aren’t really my genre.
I think I wouldn‘t recommend it to someone who doesn’t like sokoban honestly. There‘s lots of stuff going on but it’s definitely primarily a block pushing puzzle game
What I would say is that it is 100% a brainy/slower paced type of puzzle game.
You have to plan your moves and it's not uncommon to mess up and lock yourself out of a solution by doing the wrong moves. If it's that particular aspect of the sokoban flavor what turns you off then definitely handle with care. But imo there were enough twists and surprises to the formula (beginning with that staff mechanic I mentioned, and other things that get introduced later) to recommend it to someone who is initially turned off by the premise.
What the heck the Lillie Hard Mode is brutal…………… even with the wings and sword!
Also what’s this about upgrading the rod?? I would love a push in the right direction for how to do that, or at least how to not fuck it up. I know how to restart to get infinite locusts, but, I am currently dead, because of course I am, these puzzles are crazy. I think it would be unfortunate to push all the way to the end only to find I’ll need to figure out a way to get to the end without becoming VOIDed, so, please help me avoid that.
@Gaagaagiins It sounds like you might not know how to become unvoided. If you keep going in the Lillie mode, it’ll teach you, but if you’d like to know right out: If you arrange a four-eyed statue to be above a staircase and go down, it brings you back to life at the first floor. The song at the end is supposed to teach you that, but it didn’t teach me that either.
I think if you keep going with the murals you’ll get there (I recommend turning back into Grey first). I remember how to do it, but I don’t remember where the clue is.
You should beat Lillie’s route before worrying about that! Imo upgrading the rod should be the last thing you do in the game.
The clue is in the two murals that are harder to solve than the rest.
And yeah definitely recommend beating Lillie’s mode with all the brands you have available.
One last question! Or, rather, one last question and a half:
Question 1. a) Should I worry about getting to the end of Lillie’s mode without getting VOIDed? Or should I perhaps specifically experience the VOIDed conclusion first?
Question 1. b) If so, does using the infinity locust brand lock you out of anything?
I ask because through my own boneheadedness I’ve done a fair bit of repetition of this game, and while I have been really enjoying it, I want to avoid getting worn down from too much repetition. The harder puzzles with Lillie are nearly equal parts more engaging and more fatiguing… so, I want to spend the rest of my time with this mysterious little gem of a game somewhat strategically.
I had a decent run going, I think I made it to, hm, B100 or close around to it, before running out of locusts. I’m also dreading the idea of tracking down enough gems to get the last memory.
This game is like the sokoban-like Gameboy puzzle game to La-Mulana’s Metroid-like, although La-Mulana is probably way more cryptic and weird and perplexing. I bounced off of La-Mulana, but, I did beat La-Mulana 2 (not always, but, when I was, it was while being heavily aided by guides, I’ll freely admit).
@Gaagaagiins You don’t need to do 2 playthroughs with Lillie the way you do with Gray. I just did the one without being voided and that was that.
In the case of the infinity mark I can tell you it won’t lock you out of anything so it’s safe to play with it activated. And worst case scenario you can manually remove it using the locust statue trick. If you do it with the infinity mark activated it basically teleports you to a random floor leaving you at 00 locusts, so you can keep playing from there.
Definitely do what you can to avoid unnecessary repetition, as that aspect is what I consider the biggest flaw in the game.
@JoJoestar thank you, my friend! I’ll be sitting down and going in armed to the teeth when next I play, then.
@JoJoestar oh wait!! Before I do, should I go over Gray’s side of things with a fine toothed comb one more time to make sure I’m not missing any crystals? I think I’m missing, like, less than 20? Which seems like a lot to me right now but I didn’t make it into the second leg of the journey as Lillie yet.
Wish there was some kind of list for those or some way to determine where some may be still left. I think I’m missing at least one secret one that is located by solving those Picross puzzles. That would cut down on some of the unnecessary repetition.
@Gaagaagiins If you’re worried about repetition, I would say to forego the crystals for now. They’re not necessary to finish the game, and there are some you don’t have access to yet. If you want to dig for them later, there’s plenty of opportunity.
@Gaagaagiins Crystals are 100% unnecessary to all the story/main progression stuff. The most interesting thing you get is a special photo you unlock when you get all 120 which honestly it’s not worth it and you can check it afterwards anyway. And also no, you don’t need to do any extra combing! All the important stuff you might be missing you’ll see when you try to do that upgraded staff route.
Bit late to the party, but I picked this up today. I feel kind of dumb because I’m nearly at level 200 but haven’t been able to do anything weird, at least not intentionally. Getting little hints and clues but feel like I’ve likely missed something major. I haven’t spoiled myself for anything (including not really properly reading this thread).
The music and puzzles are good but I’m nervous at how long I’ve seen people say it takes to beat.
@Kthpwrth You’re doing alright! Just keep going. You haven’t missed anything; it’s just a slow burn.
@Mnemogenic
I’ve gotten to the first ending completing the game normally and then started again, dying and being told to put in my brand, which I had forgotten how to do. . Definitely feel like a baby playing this game.
Edit: oh yeah I also got a cube which I didn’t understand how to use it.
@Kthpwrth Your brand is whatever you want it to be each run, so no worries there. The cube is very important! You know how to understand the language of the place now. You can talk to boulders!
If you keep going and doing the thing that got you the cube, you’ll be on the right track. Also talk to the boulders they know a lot.
Completed my first run, starting a second. The song to wrap run 1 was sick. The up in difficulty/consequence is nice but expecting to fail sooner than later.. I have not gotten any cubes yet and forgot how to talk to boulders, that sounds familiar. Not sure what’s going on yet but enjoying the rhythm, hoping to unlock something deeper soon.
