YES! Ohhhh, you have freed me from my month-and-a-half-long curse!!! It is King’s Field, one of my favorite games I played last year. (And I played a hundred games last year!)
One thing that struck me while playing King’s Field was its lovely audio design. Piercing the droning soundtrack at regular intervals are the passive noises that every enemy produces – yelps; laughs; hisses… I spent hours feeling scared as I moved around the second floor, before I realized that the apparent danger really wasn’t all that dangerous. Power of sound, right there.[1]
As we’ve been playing through Baroque – a game heavily influenced by King’s Field – that’s one thing I’ve been sorely missing. Baroque has supremely creepy visuals, and entirely fitting music, but the sound design can only be described as… ”sufficient”! In fact, its enemies only produce sounds when they perform actions. With the unsettling monster designs found in that game, I frequently wished they would make an auditory impression as strong as the visual.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Though I didn’t realize how far in between the sounds were until I recorded these clips! Possibly not the best decision for the guessing game, in retrospect. ↩︎
