when the box art is better than the actual game

The recent mention of The Third World War on the show reminded me of how much I like that >!absolute masterpiece of a!< cover and how bored I was when I tried to play the actual game.

[size=10](that was like 5 years ago though, maybe it is actually good? looking at some gameplay right now it looks interesting, I don‘t trust my video game opinions from 5 years ago tbh, that being said even if its good it’s probably not better than the box art)

if you have any other examples of games that don't live up to their respective box art please share them in this thread

I enjoyed playing Spore when it came out, though let‘s be honest, it’s not the best game. But I think its Galactic Edition box was cool.

this game might rule (though probably doesn't) but love that cover art

I would imagine anything on the 2600 would count for this category :stuck_out_tongue:

Prior to yesterday this would have been my answer, but I’m coming around on it

Not to disparage the game in question, but:

The box art for Secret of Mana is so beautiful that, even to this day, there are still some people who accidentally confuse it for a good game

I just remembered an even more outlandish example than my last one:

Read something about this collection and since the ports seem to be very bad I'd say this goes in this thread. I really love this box art, looking at it makes me want to play more Milestone shooters.

this game is also apparently the most expensive xbox 360 game for some reason

@“穴”#p110124 I know nothing about this game but would gladly hang this art on my wall (minus the gaudy Xbox360 neon framing).

I have been playing this game a bunch lately on Nintendo Switch Online once I discovered it was actually a rebranded version of a Super Famicom All Japan Pro Wrestling game with names changed and wrestler photos altered to avoid copyright (although the wrestler sprites are easily recognizable if you know who they are other than color pallete swaps on their gear), and it's actually a great, super fun game so I feel bad putting it in this thread, but because the box art makes the boldest claim in history that it is the "most incredibly exciting game ever developed" when it is simply just a good game I think automatically means the box art is better than the game.
