Wild TV ads (probably NSFW at some point)

I couldn't find a thread for videogame TV ads, similar to the magazine ones. There are certainly plenty that could be shares by the IC hive mind.

I saw this on Twitter not knowing it was for a videogame, and it made me laugh out loud at the product reveal.

@“LeFish”#p61171 watching this allowed me to finally understand what all those npcs are talking about

I will always remember this one

(suggest we open this to non-game ads too)

I posted this in the magazine ad but the Pac-Man 2 commercial is the most wildly offensive “edgy 90s” game commercial I‘ve seen

Pac-Man 2, the fun lighthearted adventure game where you explore with Pac-Man: it’s as fun as abusing an intellectually disabled kid!

I offer these CRT TV commercials as a palate cleanser:

I Feel Coke. might just be, for equally intentional and unintentional reasons, the greatest tv ad campaign ever made. It was so successful they ran it for four straight years. A perfect capture of the popular culture, social norms and economic hubris of mid-Eighties yuppie Japan; you might argue this karmically willed the archipelago into bursting their own economic bubble. (Also a pretty hilarious song to pick at karaoke, for obvious reasons.)

② Which makes THIS campaign the greatest video game tv ad campaign ever made, in my book.

https://youtu.be/6mCyDnP4c74

It symbolically (and, in retrospect, ironically) ran at what would become the peak of PlayStation’s cultural dominance in Japan, in 2000, when the PS2 was still sold out everywhere and the PSone revision had just launched, while Sony Computer Entertainment was still using the iconic 「あそぼー。」"_Asobō._" slogan. This specific TVCM is even called 「I feel Asobō。」 in case you’d doubt whether the motif was intentional. This is my absolute favorite thing that Sony has ever done.

Some other random, interesting(?) but not especially funny or appalling TVCM stuff linked to video games:

① I already mentioned this trivia on Insert Credit before but Konami’s [Pentarō](https://youtu.be/s2jdsuWV7cM) from Parodius, and any single japanese penguin designed in the style of a soft, chubby blue penguin with a round yellow beak are "heavily inspired" by the PaPiPu Penguins, mascot characters created in 1983 by artist Hikone Norio for Suntory’s new lineup of canned beers. The 1983-1984 TVCM campaign was so successful, it got turned into a movie which was a parody of sappy Vietnam movies from the mid80s.

You can notice the impact of the PaPiPu Penguins with Konami’s Antarctic Adventure’s packaging. Here is [the original cover](https://www.retroplace.com/en/games/18640--antarctic-adventure), with Penta (Pentarō’s father) still heavily influenced by Disney’s design style. Here is [the second print](https://www.retroplace.com/en/games/18641--antarctic-adventure), "post-PaPiPu". Here are the sequels released in [1986](https://www.mobygames.com/game/penguin-adventure/cover-art/gameCoverId,80253/) and [1991](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yume_Penguin_Monogatari#/media/File%3AYumePenguinMonogatariBoxShotNES.jpg). See also [this earlier post about Pengo and Penguinland](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/114-show-me-anything-sega/585) for how the PaPiPu penguins equally influenced Sega’s penguin games, and a bit more context about why penguins invaded Japanese pop culture around that time.

② One of the rarest games on the PC Engine, [Bazāru de Gozāru no Gēmu de Gozāru](https://youtu.be/Zae6rTpd5xc) (1995), was just a byproduct of a popular promotional campaign and [TVCM series](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBToOuDYzM-TP9HPpGC9QmdafTCc_DdqY) from NEC’s computer and word processors branch, which started in 1991. Bazāru / Bazar the monkey is still [a part-time mascot for NEC](https://jpn.nec.com/bazar/) to this day.

https://youtu.be/ipT3zIR_UOs

The video game connections don’t stop there, mind you! While Bazar himself was designed by Mizuguchi Katsuo, the Bazāru de Gozāru campaign was conceived by Satō Masahiko, an artist and teacher who later created [Intelligent Qube](https://youtu.be/GbyJe6Cx5b0) on Playstation, among other interesting things.

③ The most famous TVCM campaign character turned video game character is probably ~~Cool Spot but instead let’s say~~ Segata Sanshirō. I am sure everyone here knows these spots already, but why miss an easy opportunity to post and watch them again?

https://youtu.be/gc3AK8k90xw

Besides his dedicated game [Segata Sanshirō Shinken Yūgi](https://youtu.be/YDz3WtwskTY) on the Saturn, Mankind’s greatest hero also appeared in the games [Nettō Golf](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7xn3qp) (DC) [Rent-a-Hero No.1](https://youtu.be/l20I7UZ9yoo?t=3m51s) (DC/Xbox) and [Project X Zone 2](https://youtu.be/EXr34t67jGM) (3DS).

Now, for a bit of a fun "coincidence": before creating Segara Sanshirō, Sega had relied on a slightly controversial "Saturn vs PlayStation" TV ad starring the two chimpanzees Segāru and Ansonī. It’s a chimp. Called Segāru. With a yellow background. Gee! Where did that brillant idea come from?

④ The reason there is a (seemingly random) [French version](https://youtu.be/DbxanEPNToc) of the Pikmin song [_Ai no Uta_](https://youtu.be/k-scKkglR6M) in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and all subsequent episodes is because Nintendo France had recorded it for their own TVCM campaign of Pikmin.

I used to run from the room and plug my ears if I heard the infamous Super Mario World 2: Yoshi‘s Island USA TV ad. If you dare seek it out, be warned it’s a pretty much the Mr. Creosote Monty Python sketch. What stupid marketing jerk thought that was a good idea - dumb ‘PlaY iT LoUD’ era nonsense. The Japanese commercial is so nice too.
