Here’s an explanation of what’s actually going on in the music in this game. SE bungled the messaging in multiple places.

@sabertoothalex thank you so much for posting this…I was out of the loop for a bit and just today searched “Chrono Cross remastered OST” to see if I could hear the new tracks in full and was met with all these exasperated headlines (from about a week ago lol) about how the remaster would only include these “refined” tracks. Crestfallen would be an exaggeration, but I was at the very least questioning my switch pre-order.

Anyway, I’m very happy to learn what exactly this confusing “refined” term actually means, though part of me is disappointed that I won’t hear a full reimagining of the OST (which would be a huge undertaking, to be sure!). Either way, looking forward to hearing the new tracks in their entirety!

So I started playing the game last night and I could swear the in-game tracks are very slightly sped up from what I remember: “Scars of Time” has an infinitesimally faster tempo, etc. This could be a complete delusion or the result of having listened to the original tracks more times on Youtube rips by now than directly off the original game/soundtrack.

Hmmm here, or in the Radical Dreamers thread…

Anyway, here’s 94min of Chrono Cross on the piano.

By golly I just cut two hours off the Chrono Trigger soundtrack and I'm going to post it in every thread I can come up with an excuse for (grand total of two)

man, it took me years to accept that chrono cross has the better OST, but i can't deny it

also i would pay good $ for a nice bootleg vinyl of xenogears creid, it's a crime that such a thing doesn't yet exist in this timeline

was trying to find a stream of mana wave's recent "symphony of zeal" arrangement to share here but coming up with nothing at the moment

I actually just learned about this release today via some random Twitter post! I try and keep abreast of new Chrono arrangements (especially if they are pressed on vinyl) but…well…whoops re: this one! Anyway, long story short, I may have tracked down a copy for a not insignificant premium, but some things just need to be done.

Oh, and as far as I can tell based on the description on the mana wave site, these are just pressings of Malcolm Robinson’s existing arrangements, which are streaming on a bunch of sites (e.g. YouTube). I’ve been listening to them for years—really high quality, lush arrangements (if not overly adventurous).

@kory glad you found it, hopefully for an alright price! my copy is sitting on my record player waiting for the weekend, i try to show some restraint with these things so i make sure i can really enjoy them

So having recently beat Xenoblade 3 I can safely say that I don’t think his work on this game surpasses his work on Xenoblade 2: here it’s mostly samey-sounding Epic Symphonic Motifs, pastiches of his previous work, and a bunch of stuff involving Japanese flutes that didn’t do a whole lot for me.

BUT.

The game’s major recurring boss theme, while there’s a good chance Mitsuda himself didn’t compose it (if a track-by-track composer credit listing has been released for the game, I haven’t found it) goes about as hard as any video game boss track in recent memory… at least since _SMTV_ came out last year.

This game wasn't anywhere near my radar, sonar, lidar, etc., but I definitely want to hear some more of this track (pixel art looks pretty nice, too!)

@kory I got this confused with that Echoes game for the longest time

Even though I never actually played the original entry fake nostalgia has dictated I vibe out to the Mario Party OST lately:

Gotta say this is probably the best remix of “Underground Theme” that exists:

@2501 I‘ve always held that Mario Party 3 has some of the most beautiful ending credits music of all time. I have no idea why it’s so heartfelt.

(EDIT: mistook this thread for the sharing VGM one, keeping this post here though because even though it's not Mitsuda it is very nice)
