eww, no
Bi-weekly refers to either or, depending on the context, and if sandwiched between weekly and monthly on a poll, I’m sure that would have been enough context
Shhh let me make my excuses.
I think for me, it is most likely The Chessmaster 2000.
We had an electronic chess board where you could play against “the computer” by typing in the move you made on a keypad to the side of it, and it was…ok.
Chessmaster 2000 was the first time computer chess actually seemed good (ish) though.
I’m not sure if there is much commentary to be had around the game in particular – it was just a well made computer chess game. The UI worked, it was easy to enter your moves, it was easy to read the board, it didn’t take forever for the cpu to take a turn.
Is it fair to rank this game, which is essentially a 500+ year old classic by the time of its release, against the likes of OutRun or Bubble Bobble? Is it meaningful? No, and no, most likely. So be it.
The Chessmaster 2000 is a good choice. Looks like that game was on a lot of platforms in 1986. (Amiga, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, MSX)
Is there a version you think is best or have a particular fondness for?
I eventually played the DOS version the most, by far – however I first saw it on either a friend’s C=64 or my neighbour’s Amiga. I can’t recall which, specifically.
I’m not sure if any of those is significantly different/better than the others, beyond the quirks of how those systems ran and presented things in general.
how the hell did you get a copy of Chessmaster 2000 in the year 1986… it wouldn’t have been out for another 14 years, at least!!
I’d also like to pour one or even many more out for some truly lost media. It’s dizzyingly tragic to think of how this could have happened, but Chestmaster 1,Chestmaster 2, Chestmaster 3… and even all the way up to Chessmaster 1999, has been so thoroughly lost that not even an internet based search engine has any idea they ever existed…
That robot pushing the girl on the swing looks like C3-P0’s straight jock cousin
I’ll start a 1985 thread on 1st, going backwards through the missing years. Cadence will also be monthly, but offset by 2 weeks from the forwards threads. So bi-weekly fans like me can rest easy.
Thanks for your service!
I’ve already decided what I’m going to pick when we get to 1962!

Thanks again to @Tom for gathering data on mobygames, putting together the bar charts, and making them look so nice!
Results will be updated with any changes until May 15, 2025 when they will be closed as we move on to 1987.
