Your contrarian video game opinions

Very contrarian to my tastes!

Actually my most controversial gaming opinion specifically for this community probably involves God Hand.

I was going to come in swinging with a ā€œnot only is Platinum kinda mid, so was Cloverā€ but no, I can’t, Clover somehow made 100% bangers for three years and then died.

Switch Pro is likely the next best after SNES! It’s true that the digital triggers can be best in certain conditions. Not a fan of how squishy the buttons are though, of course including the d-pad as per the Nintendo d-pad curse

Actually, this reminds me:

Breath of the Wild just kinda sucks in a lot of ways? I’ve never been so miserable playing a Zelda game as I was with that one. The combat feels loose and unresponsive, weapons breaking all the time makes that feel worse, and the Shrines were a very poor substitute for the feeling of exploring a dungeon

Atmospherically, the game is nigh unrivaled, but that wears off pretty quickly when the game is trying to be annoying as possible in just about every other respect

This is probably contrarian only on The Forum, but while we’re on the subject…

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are the two best Zelda games and nothing is actually that close. Tears is better than Breath as well.

In general, 3D Zelda > 2D Zelda

Despite my distaste for the Switch 3D Zeldas, I agree with this otherwise (Twilight Princess is the best one)

I find that Breath of the Wild does one part better than Tears of the Kingdom, which is exploration. In Breath of the Wild you actually had to walk places and see what was around, allowing you to find all the neat things and side quests. In Tears you could launch out of a tower and glide towards whatever obvious target there was, skipping everything in between. I missed SO MUCH in Tears of the Kingdom at first as there wasn’t the feeling of being tethered to the ground to find things, and I naturally skipped over a lot. Remove easy traveling via the sky and I think Tears would’ve done better.

EDIT to add that Wind Waker is probably my favorite 3D Zelda, despite the lack of dungeons. It just flows really well. Individual 3D Zelda games seem to be the best at one thing amongst others in the series, and bad at other things. For example, Majora’s was a great story, Twilight had an awesome atmosphere and enemy designs, Wind Waker had fun graphics/animations and combat…

Biggest ludonarrative dissonance in gaming for me was the universal BOTW acclaim and my experience playing it. Feel like there’s a lot to critique even if you love it that was left unsaid. TOTK is so meh to me by leaning into the largeness of BOTW but adding work. I understand the appeal for some, incredibly uninteresting for me.

Non-contrarian take on this forum: being critical things (especially things you enjoy/love) is good and healthy.

I had a bunch of other stuff that was more general, but here’s my favourite hot take:

Fighting games are only fun if you’re good at them, and they’re almost impossible to get any better at because you end up forever playing against people who play fighting games for a full time job’s worth of hours per week (and those people will forever tell you they A) aren’t actually very good at them and B) they didn’t really do much to get good at them). I don’t know that it’s possible to fix this-- or at least I’ve never seen anyone try to successfully.

This is honestly the most important thing to me and it really frustrates me when people think I’m being a hater. I’m not a hater. I just have things to say!!!

In some cases I’m just being a hater tbh

Well yes I am too. I don’t watch Disney Star Wars because I think it’s gonna be good

I’ve only really dabbled in a few fighting games here and there but I’ve always had a fun time with them because I just play with my friends – who are much better than me and offer light coaching based on my priorities if I ask, otherwise we’re just having a good time with games that look and sound phenomenal. Against sweaty randos online or CPUs is not the only way to play!! (and likely not the intended way to play either?)

I’ve found that liking things makes me happier than hating things, so I try to aim my criticism at whether I do and why someone might enjoy a thing. Everything was a good idea to somebody.

If I’m being honest I vacillate between this sort of mentality and the complete opposite entirely depending on my transitory mood
