Your contrarian video game opinions

I preordered replicant but am maybe a little scared to play it for some reason?

I played Replicant and found I like the game a lot less than I originally did 14 years ago. Oops! I think part of this was being far too aware of Taro’s ā€œbag of tricksā€ after playing Automata.

That’s funny because I replayed the original shortly after replicant came out and liked it more than I did 14 years ago.
And I really liked it 14 years ago.

I think I like Automata more because I just like sci-fi more than fantasy.

The stupid accents in modern Dragon Quest localizations are both charming and fun.

I actually think everything is too on the nose in all of his work despite me really respecting the core concepts. It doesn’t help that they don’t play well as in comparison to their peers in their format for 2 console gens.

Drakengard 3 really burning me because I think the MC and setting are incredibly cool, the performance was abysmal, the constant sex talk during even combat felt like they were beating that aspect of the characters into the ground, and I don’t think most of the english vocal performance is very good.

Automata is unquestionably a well crafted title but the necessary repetition falls flat with me. I really want to like one of his works (that isn’t voice of the cards, I think those are pretty good) without caveats. Or even with caveats. So much of what I think is really good and impactful about Automata could have been done is much lesser of a stretch of time. With my enjoyment decreases the closer I got to completing the narrative, I ended my time with it completely ambivalent to the experience.

I think I will still try whatever he directs because the ideas are always interesting enough, the execution just hasn’t hit with me on the big stuff that all the communities I’m a part of all seem to love.

Skill trees are extremely dumb and bad.

What do you mean I need to think on what to upgrade on the basic movement and attacks of my character. What if I choose to only upgrade one thing and make the game suck. I shouldn’t be thinking about adding 3% to my damage stat. That’s the job of a game designer not me.

Skill trees are just a baby sensory thing to do for gamers. Skill go up and colors appear! It’s like busy work for kids to make a game feel more ā€œinteractive and customizableā€

Granted I could see the case for this in turn based games but like what do you mean an action game needs a skill tree. Just make the action feel good.

When I look at a skill tree this is what I see

I feel the same about manually distributing stat points.

I must ask for an example because I think I always want to control my stats in an Atlus title.

However I think the skill tree + stat distribution combo done in The Rise of the Ronin is pretty sloppy, you are better off leveling up and then just choosing what ability you want to learn next with an overall stat boost.

I don’t think this is contrarian at all but moves / combos being gated behind leveling is so ridiculous.

Also, I love RPGs, but ā€œRPG elementsā€ are a plague at this point. Kratos doesn’t need to upgrade his gear as he progresses through a game. He’s the god of war, he should be unstoppable even if he’s naked.

I suppose some folks like this sort of thing

Any one. I’ll either look up the most optimal build guide (in which cause why aren’t they just doing it for me) or I deliberately do something stupid with it to see if the game will punish me for it (which can be fun, but it changes my relationship with the game). Either way, it would make for a better experience if they just decided how characters grow for me.

I don’t like build guides for the same reason I don’t like drawing maps—I feel like that information should be contained within the game if you’re not going to do it for me.

I want skill trees or similar advancement systems in my RPGs, but they’re out of place in most action games, yeah. ā€œRPG elementsā€ is one of the worst things to happen in particular to big budget ones

Belt scrollers In Particular don’t really need skill trees. Most of the best ones give you the keys to the car right off the bat and you’re left to figure it out.

You’re all treading dangerously close to criticizing Etrian Odyssey, but I know you don’t mean to.

There’s always the ā€œunless you do it coolā€ exception.
