Your contrarian video game opinions

I just saw this post after I just posted and my head exploded that you are implying that Ridge Racer sucks.

I am crying.

ridge racer is good
it’s music is too good for the driving to be bad

Here’s a fun game. Whenever a Youtuber talks about OG Ridge Racer, note how often they cut out the corner drifting. This will tell you how long they actually played the game.

I’m sorry but ā€œcar gamesā€ make every pizza parlor better

oh my god I just remembered that one episode of the anime where they basically sacrifice their LIVES so that Jessie and James can live… and you literally never see them again bc Jessie and James go off to Hoenn and get new mons… dark af

Pokemon 3: The Movie: Spell of the Unown has this review on letterboxd:

so therefore it doesn’t suck

i’ll confess: i’ve primarily played ridge racer type 4, as well as some rage racer, and i haven’t figured out how to drift; i just use the grip cars…

The trick to drifting is simple: Get a NeGcon.

wait, switch joycons would be able to replicate the ne-g-con so well! someone needs to get on that (be they emulator devs, bandai namco, nintendo, or whoever)

One of the things I wish Pokemon would steal from MegaTen is the idea that you can just re-design the fuggos and the mons that aren’t working. Both aesthetically and mechanically

Like, sorry, but Rhyperior? Ugly as sin, really doesn’t fit in with the rest of its evolution line, has stats that were outdated even when it debuted, won’t get used because it needs (1) a special item that it and only it can utilize (2) needs to be traded… Just, idk, fix it!! Change all of that!

Also, it would also give pokemon a longer shelf life. Yea, you used Meganium the grass type in the last game, but in this game it’s grass/dragon! and in the next game it’s going to be grass/fairy!

They seem weirdly precious about changing things from game-to-game, like stats/evolution methods/etc. Like with the Rhyperior thing, they need that new item that is exclusive to the new games to ā€œlogicallyā€ explain why Rhyperior wasn’t around in the older games

…but they break their own rules and logic sometimes anyway, so I don’t get why they seem so intent on always going for these very convoluted fixes.

Some new-er evolution methods:
" It evolves from Galarian Yamask when the player travels under the large rock arch in Dusty Bowl after Yamask takes at least 49 HP in damage from attacks without fainting."

" It evolves from Finizen when leveled up while connected with another player via the Union Circle starting at level 38."

" In PokƩmon Legends: Arceus, it evolves from Stantler after using Psyshield Bash in the agile style at least 20 times."

Gibberish!!!

What happened to like… a water stone? or just levelling up?

I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of this with the ACA2 release.

I’ll also add that many of the ridge racer games don’t explain much to the player. When you start to turn let off the accelerator-then right back on the accelerator and the car will start to drift. Counter steer if needed. Play around with how much time you are off for more severe draft angles.

Not sure what could possibly be so exciting about Ridge Racer. Ridges tend to move incredibly slowly

The games are old enough that it says in the manual how to drift.

more like Rhyferior

I love snorlax and specifically his shade of green

You caught me being a little disingenuous too… Snorlax sucks as an arbitrary, uninteresting obstacle in a lock-and-key puzzle in Gen I, but Snorlax removed from that context doesn’t suck

Munchlax still sucks though

Haven’t been to this thread for a while, but I wanna add that ā€œinteractive fictionā€ historically was a marketing term introduced by Infocom specifically to make their products seem more high brow and literary than ā€œadventure gamesā€ (after inventing the term, they used it for all their games including the more puzzly ones like Zork), and they were simply lucky enough that it caught on with their core audience (and eventually the following of the subgenre overall).

Dear Emily,

Please ignore my colleague.

Thank you,

They’re waiting for anything to threaten their ungodly profit margin as the #1 revenue generating IP in the world. There is literally no reason for them to risk anything if taking zero risks ensures success. They also need to maintain a system where they can pump out a new game every year to maintain that ridiculous profit margin. They are not motivated by making good games or lovable characters. They are only motivated by maintaining the money machine. Meowth is using Pay Day with the Amulet Coun equipped every day at Game Freak (originally a fan zine, this is what happens when gamers are in charge)
