Your contrarian video game opinions

Yeah like there’s Portal and…(opens Wikipedia)… there’s some Sims 2 expansions that look pretty good… Guitar Hero 3?

I mean I guess it depends what you’re looking for but as a teenager back then it was really cool and just looking at it now it still seems real solid. CoD4, Uncharted, Mario Galaxy, ME, Bioshock, Motorstorm US, God of War 2, Assassins Creed 1, Stranglehold, Rock Band, TF2, Portal, Skate, Crysis, Witcher 1, Chulip US, Armored Core 4, STALKER, Oblivion (PS3) + shivering isles, LOTROnline, Calling all Cars (PSN), The Darkness, Parappa PSP, Persona 3 US, Blue Dragon, Heavenly Sword, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, FF Tactics PSP, the last Half Life (non VR), Ratchet and Clank PS3, Virtua Fighter 5 console, FE: Radiant Dawn, Kane & Lynch. Peggle

Not as many stone cold classics as other years but plenty of standout releases or stuff that would define the next decade imo (COD and bro shooters, AC and Ubi open worlds, Uncharted and Sony third person movies, Rock Band and the death of the peripheral).

My roommate pulling his old full Rock Band setup out of the basement March 2020 was a clutch as hell moment.

All of those games and you didn’t even mention Peggle…

This stretch of like Halo 2 to CoD4 or Capcom Fighting Evolution to Street Fighter 4 felt like absolute hell for me video game wise. Uncharted, God of War 2, CoD4, BioShock…these were games that were sucking up all the oxygen in the room and they were firmly aimed at the kind of kids who were beating me up for liking video games 8 years prior. It felt like the start of the capital G Gamer culture and it felt like the medium was trying to leave people like me behind. The last remaining arcades were shutting down, the indie boom hadn’t really started yet, the fighting game revival was a year or two off. There was Mass Effect but…truly what a weird, janky mess of a game. And there was Portal. Most of my 2007 video game playing was probably Guitar Hero 2 and SingStar at parties.

Totally get that, and those kids suck. Kane & Lynch feels important as the first big “Games Journalism” bullshit that would explode into right wing gamer culture.

As the only PS3 gamer in my high school class these were games my little brother was finally old enough to play along with and the only person I had to play with. Passing the controller back and forth with him was the PS3 generation so I’ll always think of it fondly.

On the flip side, I was a junior in high school in 2007 when the big releases were coming out and it actually made me a lot of friends. I never got beat up for liking games but I was definitely a nerd who got picked on and all the popular games like Halo and CoD weirdly helped me relate to some of the cooler kids.

I can see why looking at that list now it might seem like garbage, but a lot of those games were fun and I felt like things like Portal and BioShock were also sort of bridging them over to my side a bit.

Now, I’m not friends with any of them anymore at all of course and I don’t really play or much like many of those games at this point either, but the breadth of normie games made the school year a little easier for me. Halo 3 still rules though.

This is a hell of a thing to just type on to the internet

2007 feels peak Xbox/western developed games. I had some fun with games that year (I was 27) but there isn’t a lot there I still hold in high regard.

How so? Feel like that was used as the main excuse/example for gamergate chuds to attack everything they didn’t agree with.

Gamergate was a targeted harassment campaign against a specific individual by an abusive ex.

Apologies. I meant the right wing ethics things that still happen. I’ll edit.

2007 was also the year when supply finally caught up with demand for the Wii—seems like everyone got one eventually but it was pretty challenging at the end of 2006. For then-preteen Americans (who today contribute to this narrative) this was significant as the only time we really got excited about a new generation of consoles. The Wii was like the future.

Still kind of nonsense tbh. The entire point is that “It’s about ethics in game journalism” is pure convenient fiction.

Not to mention that incident is significant for other reasons. And is basically the opposite of anything GG related.

Isn’t this what mack41 is saying?

Jeff Gerstmann being fired for reviewing K&L may be a distinct event from the rise of right wing gamer culture (+ Gamergate, so far as it is uniquely distinguishable), but speaks to the state of video games culture favoring corporate investment and advertising over actual journalism. Gamergate not only didn’t challenge that paradigm, but attacked journalism from a different vantage and it seems, from my limited pov, that the two forces worked in concert with each other—whether or not that collaboration was intentional—to effectively suppress the voice/participation in the culture of those outside the GG demographic, even if, yes, GG was never (or largely not)[1] about journalism in and of itself.

  1. pushing women out of the culture by threat of violence, when those women are journalists, does make it about journalism to some extent ↩︎

The only reason the two incidents are linked is through desperate post-hoc rationalisations desperately grasping for any legitimacy after the fact . And that one weird youtube ginger guy that said he was Jeff Gerstmann.

Reframing the debate in this way, even to label them hypocrites and failures, hands these losers a rhetorical victory they don’t deserve.

This is a good faith attempt to compare and illuminate similarities between phenomena which are nominally separate. No one is blaming GG directly for getting Gerstmann fired and I don’t know who this “one weird youtube ginger guy” is—you’re arguing with someone who isn’t here. I don’t know where you’re coming from, and if you’re not interested in explaining then we’ll have to agree to disagree and move on.

The original Ridge Racer is a better game than Daytona USA.

I’m not even sure this is contrarian considering how it worked out for the Playstation and Saturn.

(It’s correct too, Ridge Racer is better. Daytona DOES have a funny theme song but Ridge Racer has Rare Hero so it doesn’t even win in that category.)
