A thread in which to introduce oneself

Hi everyone, I'm Scott. Thought I would join the forum bc I listen to the podcast and hear it mentioned on there from time to time. I think the last time I joined an internet forum was the neo-geo.com forum around 2001. This seems like a more civil environment, which I appreciate.

I'm playing Ys Book I and II on PC Engine right now. Can anyone help me figure out how to beat the bat boss in the mine? I keep trying over and over again. I can get some damage on him but really can't figure it out. The game has been super fun and chill up to this point.

@mindleftbody if Iā€™m thinking of the correct boss: you have to just avoid the bat swarm and when he voltrons into the big bat, thatā€™s when you can get a hit in. You kind of need to wait a beat to see which way the bat swarm is going to go before avoiding them

@After that rat, another and another. Yeah this is exactly right. Very brief window where you can damage it. I think this is one of the most infamous bosses from that game because everyone hates it haha

@mindleftbody Welcome! Iā€™ll third the above adviceā€¦I played the PC version of Ys I Chronicles for the first time last year and I only realized during the very last boss that all of the boss behaviors were sped up >2x because they are apparently tied to framerate (I was running this on my 144Hz monitor). The final boss was literally impossible (as in Adol would be vaporized in mere seconds). Iā€™m not sure what my point here was, exactly, except to say that I can commiserate with absolutely loving Ys I despite improbably difficult boss battles!

Got him! Thank you for the tips. I think I was maybe not waiting long enough to attack after he turned into a demon? Really not sure though to be honest, felt like I just had to try enough times to get lucky hahaha.

@mindleftbody that is indeed what usually gets folks. Dude has to be completely a big bat again (and start animating I think??) and he doesnā€™t stay that way for long. Itā€™s not very clear and is very annoying. But if you wanna really be annoyed get ready for the final dungeon in book II. the walkthroughs on Gamefaqs are not perfect.

@ColdyBags So sorry about that game against the Chiefs. Unbelievable.

Hi, Iā€˜m Sean, despite having used the internet for the better part of 30 years, Iā€™ve never really checked out a forum, let alone made a post on one. I just started listening to the podcast and have already discovered a lot of stuff to check out.

My background is primarily in music (of the, um, *difficult* variety) but I've always loved video games (Streets of Rage 3 is my forever game) and have recently wanted to meet people who can teach me more about the art form. Since the most recent episode mentioned "The Favourite" and Strugatsky Brothers' adaptations, I figured this might be a good place for me to hang out.

@swansoft yeahhhh this is the place for that kinda stuff!

Hey, Iā€˜m Connor. Immediately regretting not giving myself a better screenname, but Iā€™m trying to transition away from the weeby anime name Iā€˜ve used in other places for like my whole life. Iā€™m sure people can relate in that it just doesnā€˜t feel right to use a new one, so Iā€™m left with my actual name. I started listening to the podcast in 2012ish when I was mega-depressed, and it would be a nice treat on Wednesdays.

I am technically a programmer (it is on my resume) but I feel like I identify more with being a music person. I am a Beach Boys obsessive, and into a ton of other 60s and 70s baroque pop and soft rock. I also like a lot of 90s indie rock, especially if it is Pavement or a Pavement clone band! I make a lot of music both videogamey and otherwise. Like many people on this forum, I also make games, though you guys are intimidating because I'm a lot newer to it than most people here are.

I had a Super Nintendo, and subsequent Nintendos as a kid, so I missed out on a lot of Genesis stuff (my cousins had one, but they only had Sonic 2, Sonic 1, and Pacman 2 The New Adventures). I love 3D platformers, which is a problem because when you really think about it, there aren't many of them. You really quickly burn through the good ones. I came to love Sonic late in life because they were the only half-decent 3d platformers I haven't played, then I started to really scrape the bottom of the barrel and play stuff like Jersey Devil on PS1. I love Final Fantasy, and like many people have somewhat-recently played way too much of FF14. I recently lost money betting on Balan Wonderworld. Am still sore about it.

I donā€™t make games, but want to, so weā€™re not all super knowledgeable. I feel ya tho. Welcome! Iā€™ve found this is a great place to learn a lot about cool and interesting game things. We have a good time.

@Connor youā€™ve got me trying to think of lesser known 3d platformers to recommend, but iā€™m getting nothing. this is surprising to me.

@pasquinelli @Connor I like Mail Mole.

@billy that looks really interesting. i bet thereā€™s tons of indie 3d platformers iā€™m unaware of.

the idea of jumping going from surface to space and landing going from space to surface has so much potential for puzzles.

Iā€˜m hoping Spooky Pooā€™s Happy Hell comes out eventually. Steam Community :: Error

a lower-tier 3D platformer I can recommend is the gamecube/ps2 series of unfortunate events game.

@billy def going to download this

@exodus Iā€™ve also been waiting for Spooky Pooā€™s Happy Hell!

@Connor Welcome! Tried Toree 2?

@whatsarobot Didnā€™t know this had a sequel! The first one is super.

@billy Agreed! The second one may be even better!

Yes! I like it a lot. The sense of momentum you get when running is honestly so good, and I love how weighty the jump feels. A lot of games feel way too floaty for me. Like, I know people love the Jak games, but I really don't like the jump in them. Actually, I always kind of had a suspicion that the person who made it had some insert credit-connection, given its aesthetic.

My one thing about Toree3D (which is purely a taste thing!) is that there's like... a level select menu and then each level is basically just an obstacle course without much sense of place. That's what it wants to be so it's fine, but I always appreciate when there's also an effort to give you the sense of a world. Not like, Banjo Kazooie exploration or anything, just like how in Mario World there's the illusion of something larger. Honestly I'm tempted to start up a thread and talk about the specifics with people.
