All of the Times in The Sopranos where someone is playing a videogame

As I go through the final Season, it will soon be time to say goodbye to The Sopranos (abruptly and ambiguously). There is one more half entry:

You know for certain it’s the mid 2000s, because even a parent like Carmela is talking about XBoxes.

I do love that since this is occurring during a time when there is now two XBoxes, Carmela is employing the classic boomer fungibility of game console brands error. What is “an Xbox” in this context? Did they cheap out on the annual Christmas toy drive and give an ancient lumbering beast in the form of the original XBox? Or is there just simply not a tangible difference between XBoxes to Carmela?

A very kinda-not-really entry:

I’m not exactly sure which little kid this is, but, come on Janice, who the hell could give a shit about folding napkins when America’s own XBox Gaming Console is before us? This scene does not follow through on showing the XBox in question. So this is a time in The Sopranos where someone is talking about potentially playing a videogame, and then is denied the opportunity to do so.

Truly not just a non-entry, but an anti-entry: A time in The Sopranos where someone is interacting with the mortal enemy of videogames:

In being this engrossed in The Second Coming by W. B. Yeats, has Certified “Made Gamer” Gamer Gangster “The Godfather of Gaming” “Shadow the” Anthony Junior turned his back on Gaming once and for all? Only time will tell! Stay tuned.

This one is pretty spoiler-y so I’ve elected to hide most of it under a cut.

Spoiler for The Sopranos, Season 6, Episode 20, the penultimate episode in both the 6th Season and the entire series.

Summary

In the second last episode of the entire series… in his darkest hour, in his time of greatest need, at the lowest point in his entire life, as he has hit rock bottom… what could Punished Certified “Made Gamer” Gamer Gangster “The Godfather of Gaming” “Sonic the” Anthony Junior turn to, but his beloved videogames?

( TV PLAYING )

After landing in the young adult psych ward, it is this, my friends, which the writers and camera has chosen to show us is a sign of a positive trajectory in the mental health of our dear friend Punished Certified “Made Gamer” Gamer Gangster “The Godfather of Gaming” “Sonic the” Anthony Junior “the Hedgehog.”

While the screen is not visible during this scene, according to some Reddit post that I found on a similar subject to this forum post (which is missing some of the instances I’ve catalogued in this thread, naturally, because I am better than that), the sound effects that are audible are from Halo 3. That was my first guess based on the sounds–kinda sounded like some laser gun being fired and someone shouting a word I couldn’t discern. I’m not going to do any more research than that.

What a touching moment… surely none of this will turn to tragedy! Surely, an original XBox and a copy of Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball falling from a height due to violence will not symbolize a final loss of innocence and a intensifying rather than a slowing of the cycle of intergenerational trauma in the face of domestic brutality…!

…oh…!!

…oh, no…!!

…and with that, since I have also watched the last episode and have nothing further to report, this thread is now concluded. Thank you everyone for following along with “All of the Times in The Sopranos where someone is playing a videogame,” which, unexpectedly turned out to include all of the times in The Sopranos where anyone mentioned videogames, videogame adjacent things, or a videogame or videogame console was shown on screen.

Salut!

Oh no.

In re-reading this thread for my own amusement after it came up in my notifications due to the ongoing edits from the forum migration, I have come to a horrifying realization.

What if someone was playing a videogame in The Many Saints of Newark? I don’t want to watch it, it sounds dumb… but… what if someone is playing pinball in the background?? They had pinball in the 60s and 70s, right? And pinball is sort of like a kind of videogame that isn’t fun…

Can anyone with 100% confidence say that no one in The Many Saints of Newark is depicted playing a videogame or even a primitive imitation of a videogame??

The Many Saints of Newark doesn’t exist. There’s only The Sopranos. So not entirely sure what you’re talking about here.

Oh thank goodness. That settles that
