It's so awkward how he's kinda just standing in the middle of their huge upper middle class (sorta) suburban Italian American house. Remember when controllers had wires?
Season 2, I think Episode 9, the certified Gamer Gangster Anthony Junior aka “AJ” Soprano is shown playing Pokémon Pinball on one of the best standard color variations of the Game Boy Color, the Teal.
According to some random Reddit post, the game is CART: Flag to Flag aka Super Speed Racing スーパースピードレーシング, which was a launch title for the Sega Dreamcast.
As he exits the scene, he turns the TV off, but he does not turn the console off.
As someone who's never been able to get past the first episode of The Sopranos (I have a TV allergy), I am consistently surprised at what a delight this thread is turning out to be.
It is pretty terrible if I’m being honest… within the context of this thread. There is barely any gameplay footage (none at all of Pokémon Pinball!) or discussion of gameplay or hardware features. I mean, would it have killed them to put in at least a few reviews or to point out the uniqueness of Pokémon Pinball’s Rumble capabilities, or the innovative approach of the Dreamcast controller’s VMU functionality? Absolutely pitiful.
We can assume that Certified Gamer Gangster Anthony Junior aka “AJ” Soprano certainly played the PlayStation 2 that was right in the hotel room, but it is somewhat within the realm of possibility that he did not have time, or the selection of games available for loan at the hotel was not up to his discerning tastes. To momentarily hearken back to a previous entry in this thread, one of my only memories of Blast Corps. besides seeing the box at Blockbuster and never renting it was also seeing that it was available for loan at a hotel I once stayed in as a kid, I think either on the way to somewhere or at Disneyworld (yes, I grew up in a “Disneyworld once or twice” working class household).
From what I can tell from some cursory research, Season 3 of The Sopranos was shot between September and December of 2000, and aired between March and May of 2001. That meant that the PlayStation 2 was brand spanking new at time of filming in North America, it having launched there in November 2000. Certified Gamer Gangster Anthony Junior aka “AJ” Soprano must have been staying at a pretty nice hotel, for there to be a brand new gaming console right in the room!
This also means that the selection of PlayStation 2 launch or launch window titles that Certified Gamer Gangster Anthony Junior aka “AJ” Soprano could have been playing as loaned to him in a hotel room by the hotel in Washington D.C. was relatively limited. What do you think him and his school chums were playing? X-Squad? Unreal Tournament 2? Orphen: Scion of Sorcery? Timesplitters? Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2? Fantavision?
