this week’s movie is…

Tank Girl

(imdb, letterboxd, wikipedia)

while hunter won the Gamer quiz (despite not having even seen Gamer), as he wasn’t able to make it this week, he passed his choice on to connrrr, who chose Tank Girl (which was submitted to the club by kiki; hopefully that’s not too many names to keep track of!).

the discord stream of the movie (along with the quiz about Drive My Car) will start at around 2025-05-18T00:00:00Z tonight (hopefully that shows the time for your time zone!).

Oh shit, maybe I need to reread the comic to refresh my mind?

Actually, I’m probably good to go.

the quiz will start in about 10 minutes, after which we’ll watch Tank Girl! be there or be square (or be circular, why not)

For years the only thing I’ve heard is that the Tank Girl movie is fucking awful and sucks, and then I watch it and it actually rules and is ultra lesbian and feminist girl power overload.

Once more I learn to never trust anyone ever.

i missed movie club tonight so i could go to my friend’s grad party (actually fun!) but she was upset the whole time because her roommate of five years skipped the party so it was a lot of nodding and “your feelings are SO valid ”/“you have a right to be angry” tonight. Anyway, I hope Tank Girl was fun. I love lesbians :heart_hands:

that is exactly the correct response! haha

more seriously, this is a “wave”, a “radical edit” of the fillm by a bunch of editors as a glitch-art project. I’ve mentioned this movement briefly on these boards over in Happening now - #12 by rejj

Holy shit, I know it was a few movies ago, but a few months back me and my partner found a dvd copy of Tokyo Cowboy at the library and picked it up on a whim and the wild pitch on the case. We had a few friends over and watched it and all of us were completely in a state of shock at what the movie actually ended up being. I promptly fell in love, and it is legitimately one of the most impactful viewing experiences I have had in years. Now joining this forum recently, finding this post and checking to see what recent picks were, I stumble across the movie again! With other people having heard of and enjoyed this film, mere months after I found it at the library. That is something special, truly. Some thoughts about the movie below.

long winded thoughts

The trans allegory was very powerful and moving, as was their portrayal of lesbian relationships and female characters. I am a straight, cisgender man, and was worried that maybe this was a surface level read or harmful in ways i didnt have the knowledge and/or context to realize, so seeing your write up from a queer perspective was enlightening and affirming, not to mention incredibly well written and insightful.

My own input to add is that the sincerity of the movie truly felt like something you just don’t see anymore. There is a charm and soul to this film that I feel like is rarely, if ever, seen in movies that come into my sphere of information. I am relatively young being born in 2001 and so most of my conscious critically thinking movie watching experience has been defined by modern day blockbuster film making. MCU, DCU, Fast & Furious, anything the Rock is in for the most part. Im not saying these movies are objectively lesser than what came before, but subjectively speaking they all have a very, non committal design by commitee or focus group feeling to them, designed according to data rather than an emotional authored creative work derived from a persons lived experience. This movie is the latter, and it is so much the latter that it has put into crystal clarity what it is that is missing in more modern filmmaking.

This is a movie that is saying something, it has a voice and a message. It has a clear visual symbolism and strong themes that run through every part of it, and it feels so uniquely singular despite its relatively basic structure and adherance to typical traits of a romantic comedy. It is one of the most impactful viewing experiences i have had in years, and I found it not through some list of hidden gems, or a recommendation from a friend who is the guy for weird obscure movies, but at the fucking library, browsing a random shelf and taking a chance on a wild back of box summary.

Im sure the takeaway here is that I should be watching more indie films, and that is definitely something ill be doing, but the more interesting one is that this feels like such a rarity in the modern day. Few movies inspire me to feel so strongly about it, to want to write about it and express thoughts to page worthy of the the thoughts put to film and shown to me. Some other notable examples include every Jordan Peele movie yet to date, Saltburn (another absurd movie to watch completely blind going in), and to take a step next door over to television, Bill Hader’s HBO show Barry. But compare those to the most successful and well known media ventures like anything Disney or Warner Bros. or any blockbuster franchise, and they are so in a different ball game they are almost incomparable. Most people I have ever talked to in real life at the very least know about Marvel. I have talked to two people in real life that have seen Barry.

I think its a real shame that we arent getting more things like Tokyo Cowboy. That it and countless movies like it are getting left in obscurity instead of being widely shown and appreciated and funding being directed to make more things like it. I know its out there, but I want more of it and more visibility, I want it to be the mainstream, not a sub culture. I want them to be household names, not obscure library finds.

All that to say, I really liked this film, and seeing it here has instantly made me want to actually participate in this movie club, and keep up with it when I can. Especially if we get more picks like this. Very glad I stumbled upon this forum. Hopefully its not too disruptive to bring up a slightly old topic of the thread, I just had to talk about it.

Edit: Clarity

On the contrary, I hope people feel they can continue discussing films past the week of the initial film club screening!

On the subject of Tank Girl, I got my hands on a making of book today. Only had time to quickly flip through it, but there’s lots of stuff in here. Real interesting, has both details on the stuff they made and suggestions of what was cut (like every scene with Sub Girl).

the stream will start in the discord soon, after we finish the quiz (which you’re welcome to join, even if you didn’t watch Tank Girl!)

He sure mistered those beans. Will go through the list and pick something more carefully this time, because last time I picked Gamer and that wasn’t a good choice, oops.
