Analog Buttons - under pressure

There seems to be a general distaste for pressure-sensitivity among the show hosts, but I am all for it!

I love corner and ledge peeking in MGS2, particularly looking in the mirror to see my model smoothly tweening side to side.

曲げる付ける走る (aka Magetuske the racing game maker) has highly aggressive pressure sensitivity that cannot be calibrated, so if you want full throttle on a PS2 controller, you have to press really hard all the time. When we say 100% we mean 100%!

Gran Turismo 2 NeGcon controls have lush calubration options, allowing you to freely set the deadzone and max positions to whatever feels comfortable. Very good for adjusting the throw needed while playing with the thumb across both those fatty I & II buttons.

My favorite flop with pressure sensitivity is in the gamecube port of Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, when in the ranger tutorial, you are instructed that lightly pressing A will allow you to aim your bow without firing.

What are your favorite/least favorite use cases? Which analog button is the best? Gamecube triggers? NeGcon face buttons? PS3 face buttons?

I like those Dreamcast shoulder buttons. Real big springs.

My dreamcast experience is somewhat limited but I can’t think of what used their analog-ness - did many driving games use them?

That’s exactly it. I remember playing Crazy Taxi with it for the first time and it felt like the future.

Growing up playing PS2 and PS3 as my primary console of my teens, I have 0 memories of playing any games that used the pressure sensitive buttons. But with my recent descent into playing the Metal Gear Solid series, I bought a PS2 and the MGS games for it to see how it plays and looks on a CRT! I go hold up a guy in MGS3 and instantly slit his throat. :scream_cat: I go to shoot a guy with the sleepy pistol and miss, and I put the gun down instead of being able to shoot again quickly. :scream_cat: Having played MGS1, 2, and 3 without pressure sensitive buttons and generally really liking the controls, I’m struggling hard with having to use the pressure sensitive buttons on PS2. It just feels off, like I haven’t gotten the hang of it. Maybe the functionality will grow on me, but so far, with MGS3, absolutely despising it.

My only dislike is that I don’t know how to use those buttons on MGS2 anymore without getting a PS2 again. :/

Yeah the fact that most emulators will just send “100%” signals is a drag. Right now I’m trying to see if I can get a usb dongle with an actual ps2 controller to somehow work properly with an emulator. Seems like its feasible but might be dongle dependent, so we will see if this cheapest option I tried first is workable. Will report back.

it definitely adds a lot of tension during cqc and sneaking in mgs3 to not go wild and accidentally kill someone! I think it adds to the gameplay, but in a very annoying way.
