(Archived 2022) The thread in which we talk about games we are currently playing

@“Salloumi”#p86474 I‘m not the best guide but I’ll try.

Motion controls aren't required, despite what hardcore fans will tell you. The control stick has a lower skill floor while motion controls have a higher skill ceiling.

On the menu (which you access with the X Button), Lobby = Versus Mode, Square = HUB, Alterna = Single Player, The Shoal = Local Multiplayer, Grizzco = Online Co-op. There's also a minigame called Tableturf Battle in the hub.
Having certain game modes you have no desire to engage with is normal! There's still plenty to engage with! (Personally, Versus Mode drains my spirit)

If you do play Story Mode, every stage will have one to three weapons to choose from, and if there's more than one, one of the weapons will be labeled "Try this!". This weapon is the level's "Normal Mode". Weapons to the left are balanced for an easier experience, while weapons to the right are for a more challenging experience. Ranking goes as follows:
Very Easy > Easy > "Try this!"/Normal > Hard > Very Hard
So if you get three options and the "Try this!" label is on the first option, then the third option would be Very Hard mode.

If you ever wonder why the game doesn't let you customize your weapons, it's a game balance thing. Plus, the way the game is designed, you can tell what other players have at the start of a match just by seeing what's in their hands.

That's all I can think of and I hope this was the kind of info you were looking for!

Oh, and as an introduction to the series as a whole: Welcome to Splatoon! All the mammals died (except two cats who might be clones, and maybe a capitalist bear?) and now squid humanoids are the ruling class and they love pop culture. Warfare happens to be pop culture. Octopuses and salmon are kinda oppressed but Octo humanoids have passing privilege. The hub is flooded with fantastic art and meme garbage, always. Go home now if you want stable netcode. Enjoy your stay!

@“Nailah”#p86488 thank you, that’s helpful! I know this much so far: I would not thrive in our paint based future.

@“Syzygy”#p86499 that makes sense, thanks for the context. this game would be so much more fun two player if there way a way to cast magic without opening the dang menu. all of our spells are level 0 still because we only use them during boss fights

I also really enjoyed bloodstained curse of the moon but didnt realize it was made by inti creates. Can anyone vouch for their other more recent games like gunvolt or blaster master zero?

The Blaster Master series is also quite good! I’m really impressed by how well IntiCreates manages to capture Famicom looks with modern quality of life controls and interface. I’ll also suggest Mighty Gunvolt Burst, a game that honestly shocked me with how much fun it was!

I am a couple of hours into Prodeus and it's hella awesome! I am a fan of Doom, Duke 3D, and the rest of the boomer shooters and this is a fantastic tribute. You have to see it in motion to appreciate it. I am totally captivated.

started playing The Excavation of Hob's Barrow

I like it - it has a strong sense of style and the writing and visuals are so far pretty good. Voice acting is also good

@fridgeboy we have a new archeology game in town

@“yeso”#p86687 oooo this looks great. I'm going to check this out!

@“yeso”#p86687 whoa! Gotta check this out. Is it pc only?

After trying Babylon‘s Fall, I got a real bad feeling that I needed to give Left Also be another go. The last few years of weird Square action games that didn’t land are somewhat fascinating.

Last time I played it, I dropped it during the second mission. This time I started fresh and made it to the fifth. Then I checked how many there are and it is fourteen which is at least six too many. There is no variety in game and everything is slightly too laborious. If there was some level design or mechanical design variety I might have stuck with it. It has some neat ideas and you can see they're trying to simulate a whole battlefield of enemy patrols at once but outside of mechanical improvements, it just needs more variety.

It is one of those games where you can see what they were going for but it doesn't come together so you make it through anyway you can. For example, molotov cocktails are the best stealth kill weapons in the game. When you throw one, enemies don't notice the bottle of fire coming towards them. When it hits them, they burn to death but while burning, nearby enemies come to see what's up with them then lose interest almost immediately and don't care when they see their buddy fall to the ground.

The game is riddled with problems like enemy vision comes that seem to be determined by a random number generator and enemy telepathy making each encounter really unfair. Some weapons make you play a long knock down anim when you get hit so you get stun locked.

I like semi kusoge so I did kind of enjoy playing it and if it had variety, would have finished it.

I started playing the 3ds version of Radiant Historia, I‘m about 4 hours in and I’m really enjoying it. The combat is quick and has some fun/simple puzzle elements to it. You gain exp quickly and nothing really drags too much. It seems like the story could go somewhere interesting but probably too soon to tell. The music and visuals are chill, very much a relaxing hangout. There‘s rainy city vibes and lots of indoor plants early on. I turned off the voice acting but it seemed fine if you’re into that kind of thing. It's nice to play something newish that feels like a classic non-square RPG from the16/32 bit era.

@“mindleftbody”#p86732 I’ll be curious how you enjoy it further in! It was one of my favourite RPGs on 3DS (and I should probably go back and play it yet again).

mac and some system called a linux

@“mindleftbody”#p86732 gotta love that Yoko Shimomura soundtrack, too. that game has some gorgeous music.

@“Karasu”#p86742

Looking forward to getting more into it!

@“whatsarobot”#p86755

The music is really good.

@“yeso”#p86749 never heard of that other thing but I’ve got a Macintosh personal computer!

@“Osu 16 Bit”#p86678 That is a real cool-looking game. So far I‘ve only played through the first map and I’m having a great time.

Feels like what I would have liked out of Doom 2016. Not to say Doom 2016's a bad game, just not really my thing.

It's normally like a big housecat but it was actually also a handheld. It was invented by Brandon Sheffield, and he only made one

@“Gaagaagiins”#p86780
