(Archived 2022) The thread in which we talk about games we are currently playing

gotta say that does look good

@robinhoodie#17545 I played Shadow of Mordor on the PS4. Had no idea it was a late addition to that generation. Maybe Iā€˜ll give War a chance based on your suggestion. My favorite parts of the first game were when Iā€™d be trying to pick off the Captain while surrounded by enemies only to have more Captains burst into the fray. It was especially fun when an intruder was someone who had already killed me, it was like they were coming for easy pickings. Struggling to survive those encounters (or not) was the best part of SOW.

@tapevulture#17413 I played it on PS4 and didn't have any of those issues. I was sometimes frustrated by the Assassins Creed control jank. Floundering around the level geometry as I tried to jump down or quickly climb up something was never as smooth as it was intended.

@treefroggy#17696 Twilight Princess came out at just the right time to satisfy my desire for a more ā€œadult Zeldaā€ experience. I really enjoyed the more morose aspects of the narrative and the art direction. NPCs in Castle Town had a Final Fantasy flavor that none of the other games have really matched. I prefer Wind Waker overall, especially in terms of the dungeons, combat and exploration.

@KingNothing#18167 (please note all this is just IMHO, not trying to dump on your opinionā€¦.)

Nothing about Twilight Princess says ā€œadultā€ to me though. I almost feel like itā€˜s the Shadow the Hedgehog of Zelda. Again comparing it to Shadow of the Colossus where the storytelling of the game comes off as more mature than TP doesā€¦ The whole first half of TP is about these cringy babies Iā€™m supposed to care about, while congratulating me for doing an extremely simple task that has been inflated artificially with musical stings and dramatic cut scenes. Twilight Princess would stand a lot better on its own if I had skipped Majoraā€˜s Mask, but I didnā€™t and that game has more mature and deep stuff going on than this one. I feel like Twilight Princess would be a lot more amazing if I had only played Ocarina of Time and skipped Majoraā€˜s Mask and Wind Wakerā€¦. But I didnā€™t. I played every game as it came out. It just doesn't feel like it does anything new to push things forward aside for Midna and the Twilight Realm, which is super dope, but should have been expanded more before returning to the already tiresome formula.

It would be nice if I could adjust the camera to get a look at any of the character's designs or faces in castle town, I guess that gives it a Final Fantasy flavor akin to FF9 because you can hardly make out certain character's faces in that one, giving it more of a 16bit feel where the character sprites are representative and you gotta fill in the gaps with your imagination.. I do like what I can see though. Every 3D Zelda game does a good job re-interpreting the NPCs that were in aLttP.

Yeah, TP has a lot of beautiful and chill aesthetics going on, and it would be nice to see that make a return, along with a lot of what Majora's Mask did. We'll see what happens in BotW2 because it seems like they're going for something darker. I would like to see the aesthetic of the Fused Shadow / Majora's Mask (the mask, not the game) expanded on.

I just started Doki Doki literature club minutes ago. I literally have no clue what to expect but I've heard enough of it to wanna jump in so here I go. WEE!

@SuperEffective#18286 my favorite game i played in the last year. donā€˜t think thereā€™s been a good discussion of it on here yet so definitely post your thoughts if you have any

@tapevulture#18287

I can give my first impressions at least and I think it has been really surprising in its depth so far. I really actually enjoy the music so far a lot and the characters are all really charming. There's something complex about it that I can't quite put my finger on yet, but I know that theres got to be something looming that I could be surprised by, since I have been surprised by it in such a short time already. I enjoy the poetry portion so far! It's all so endearing and I'm starting to see why so many people are fascinated with this game. That's all I feel comfortable to share and I definitely feel like I'm being primed for something that I won't expect.

I also sometimes write poetry so this was unexpectedly right up my alley. It's so psychological and I'm enjoying the short time I've been playing.

edit: ok it's getting intense now. I feel like I've been sucked into a vortex. I feel... I feel doki doki.... I feel all the feelings. What is this game?? Who am I??? What am I becoming?

@SuperEffective#18288 I knew nothing about this game before I played it, other than there were general rumblings about it being something good/interesting/cool/etc.

It might be interesting to start up a thread about it once you're done. I'm curious what the IC crowd thinks about it, and I've never really sat down to try and organise my thoughts either.

I was gonna star pathologic 2 and then I was too stressed so I just started a new round of Civ 6 instead Iā€™m so sorry

I bought Dark Souls 3 last weekend and have been enjoying it quite a bit. It feels like the first game on 1.5x speed. I already knew a bit about the game so was going to try out a dex/magic build but Iā€˜ve regraded into my first ever souls build of high dex with sword and bow. Itā€™s working pretty well!

The only criticisms I have of the game so far is there is too much mud/swamp zones where you cant move easily and that the enemies'death rattles are so Darn LOUD!

@SuperEffective#18288 the writing poetry music owns!!

there are so many layers of meaning to the game. each time i peel one back there's something else there.

@beets#18306 the swamp slow move areas chill out after a bit. Theyā€™re very front loaded.

Also unless youā€˜re feeling beefy, Iā€™d go through that area unemberedā€¦

I have started Umurangi Generation. Dug up the idea, didnā€˜t like at all the concept of the timer. I know itā€™s not necessary, but it's weird to put that in a game that pushes you to shoot, edit, move and have your own dose of fun.

@treefroggy#18242 Oh yeah, when I say that I mean I was an angsty young teen looking for a Zelda that wasnā€˜t a straight-up cartoon (though I totally fuck with the Wind Waker art style) It certainly wasnā€™t a mature or contemplative game.

Iā€˜ve just cleared Ys book 1 on turbo duo. What a fun breezy game. Grinding was nice while listening to podcast. Super OP killing bosses feels so satisfying. Thereā€™s no way I could've finished without a guide but all great times.

What's really surprising was how you get book 2. For years I just assumed that there gotta be a menu to pick which game to start but nope. Ok so I thought it's gonna give you book 2 start screen after you clear book 1. NOOOPPEEEE!!! What it does is as soon as you clear book 1, it goes straight into extremely hype book 2 intro cutscene and you go off to book 2. Book 2 intro serves as both ending for book 1 and intro for book 2. I've seen this intro before but seeing in context was kind of shocking haha. I was expecting to see end credits but I was like holy shit when book 2 intro showed up. It would've completely blew my mind if I played back then. I'm hooked!!

I've since learned that book 1 does have its own ending in other versions from PC88 to modern remakes so maybe this cut is unique to pc engine version? Is there a version or mod of Rondo that goes straight into SotN? That would be cool.

iā€˜ve been on a point and click kick of late, and played though this extremely satisfying light gun inspired western called dead horizon. it immediately gives you a sense of place and character. thereā€™s a tension as youā€˜re encouraged to click around each scene but make sure to keep an eye on the hombre youā€™re dueling with. it only takes all of 10 minutes to play through. the game is $5000 on itch if youā€˜ve robbed a train recently, but itā€™s free anywhere else you look (like on steam).

I feel like Twilight Princess would be a lot more amazing if I had only played Ocarina of Time

Wouldn't it be more likely that playing Ocarina first is what hurt your chances of enjoying Twilight Princess the most? Just to refer to the argument that they're basically the same. I've cooled significantly on TP (and Zelda in general) in recent years so maybe my opinion isn't worth much here but I fell in love with it when it came out, which I assume is due to my having never finished (or played much of) any 3D Zelda before it (being 11 and inexperienced may have also been a factor :p). I actually still have not ever finished Ocarinaā€”while I have finished and enjoyed WW and MMā€”perhaps because of how similar it is in structure to Twilight Princess (though probably more because I don't like how OoT feels to control). I guess my hot/stupid take would be that Twilight Princess is the better version of Ocarina, but I don't have a huge stake in defending that claim.

Agree that the art direction, Midna, and some of the mechanics suggested (but not really delivered upon) by the twilight realm are the greatest justifications for the game's existence, and that they don't make up enough of the game to satisfy that justification. As you said in your earlier comment, it is a comfy game! I didn't think it was worth writing a whole post about it in the soundfeel thread but I do love the menu/selection- and text scrolling sound effects.

My copy of the Deadly Premonition Switch port finally arrived. Iā€˜m about an hour in and having a blast. Itā€™s everything I expected and more.
