Locally, there was a mutual aid forum last month, and there’s a big skillshare group starting up this weekend. A lot of activist / left-leaning people seem to really be searching for the best use of their energy in an especially dark, harmful, criminal time.

For a lot of people, you don’t actually pay anything (in federal income tax) but get a refund instead. Last year I got a whole thirty dollars! So I imagine everybody will be business as usual unless they’re some magnate. People want those refunds. They plan big purchases around them.

well a few years ago I had a tax payment mis-applied to the then future tax year of 2024 and the money is just sitting there not yet applied to anything. So I had to double-pay that past year and now I haven’t been able to confirm if the IRS will apply that money to this year’s balance. So looks like I’ll be double paying again. But that’s ok I’m a Patriot

They do a thing here where if your self-employed income goes over a certain (still very low) threshold, you have to pay the following year’s tax in advance, based on the previous year’s totals, then claim a refund if there’s a difference between what you paid and the actual total. I fluked a good year once and it basically ruined me.
AND we get letters from the government telling us we can’t pray in our own homes. Wish I lived in America so I could help make it great again

Also I wanted visibility compared to “tell me anything”, gamer news, etc and I don’t think this counts as a video essay at all. This seems to be the thread most hanged out in lately. So yeah this counts as current events in our culture.

Gathering is an imaginary word as it can have no stable definition. only a personal one from person to person. Simplified as it’s used it means any level of fandom someone who’s fandom who is slightly greater than yours which implies that your level fandom isn’t good enough. So much bad internet dialogue comes down to the use of words that can only have personal definitions. They’re slippery and hard to antagonize even in good spaces like this forum. Places like reset era or Twitter, places that revel in crushing nuance, it’s impossible.
Sorry this wasn’t directed at you per se, I just had to go on this rant.if I were more smart and a much, much more diligent of a thinker I would love to build on Baudrillard’s writing. It’s never felt more relevant and descriptive of the time we live it.

“everybody” getting a DOGE check is misreporting. The proposed plan was to give the checks to “net payers of federal income tax”. That’s about 79 million people. Most people are not “net payers of federal income tax”, which is what right-wingers mean when they say “taxpayer”.
