Was anyone on the forum thinking about getting a PS5 Pro before the price announcement? I enjoy my PS5 but knew that a Pro wouldn’t be worth the upgrade because I don’t really play anything that would take advantage of “pro” power.

The price is stupid but the cost of the base model hadn’t gone down since launch. These half gen systems are pretty lame anyway. I’m shocked Sony decided to do this. The PS4 Pro kind of made sense but this is PS3 style pricing and everyone hated that.

I was/am considering some model of PS5 (possibly a Pro) and a snazzy TV when I finally find a place to settle down for a while, but like I said above the disc drive is an important consideration. That this machine can’t boast the same mutimedia compatibility as the expensive first PS3 seems absurd

i remember hearing that this was actually a repeated mistranslation and the original greek (?) says a cable through the eye of the needle but i have to admit the mistranslation is much better here

Sony, I liked it better when prices went that other direction. I usually buy systems at the end of generations because I’m cheap, so I guess I won’t be owning a PS5 ever.

Genuinely curious what like poor kids nowadays are able to play? Used PS4s with Fortnite?

bested again by my arch-nemesis….

edit: apparently my statement came from cyril of alexandria:

Cyril of Alexandria claimed that “camel” was a Greek scribal typo where Biblical Greek: κάμηλος, romanized: kámēlos, lit. ‘camel’ was written in place of Biblical Greek: κάμιλος, romanized: kámilos, lit. ‘rope’ or ‘cable’.
“By “camel” here he means not the living thing, the beast of burden, but the thick rope to which sailors tie their anchors. He shows this comparison to be not entirely pointless (as a camel would be), but he makes it an exceedingly difficult matter; in fact, next to impossible.”

i can see his point since κάμηλος means camel whereas κάμιλος means rope (kudos to the link below).

there is also this answer here from the helpful and i’m sure perfectly normal young men on the biblical hermeneutics stack exchange where they state the armenian bible uses “rope” in that proverb and some scholars say the aramaic word “gamla” can be translated as camel or rope.

however, i didn’t know any of this before googling it just now so far be it from me to claim expertise here. we’re talking about centuries old scrolls after all.

Most normal people or poor people are like this:

  • still use PS4
  • nintendo switch
  • xbox series S, or xbox one
  • used their 2020 USA stimulus check to buy a PS5 or a gaming PC
  • skipping this generation
  • using public rigs like at net cafes, libraries, friend’s house etc.
  • got an xbox series x somehow used or whatever

I know someone who just got a PS5 this week actually after waiting this entire time.

I bought a PS4 earlier this year for 150 USD and a bunch of games for 5-10 dollars each. You can get a decent refurbished laptop for around the same price, and most modern games are still playable if you crank the graphics all the way down.

It’s weird to me that there just doesn’t exist a retail budget option anymore. I remember in 2008 or 2009 my laser had stopped working on my PS2 for a while, so I went out and bought a new one for $99. That’s ~$150 today. I guess the Switch Lite comes close to that price, but if you want anything that can be played on a TV screen it’s $300 minimum.

also snagging one of those budget misters vs staying gen current.

@Herb that and also miss when they’d do a price cut every few years once the console was out for a bit. I got my PS4 bundle on sale for $243 in 2017. It’s hard to see a point in a full priced PS5 (let alone pro) over a 4 when most of the new games seem to be GAAS and that stinks.

I’ve had my gaming PC for about four years, and the only reason I’d upgrade it is because I do some 3D rendering on the side, but there hasn’t really been a better reason to upgrade for the games. Particularly since the marquee multiplayer stuff is for systems well below my specs.

My group of friends only got a PS5 because I moved out of our apartment with the ps4

They delisted the original!?!

I actually ponderer about it a little while ago, when FFVIIR2 was released and thinking I’d wait for a pro model to fully experience it. Then when FFXVI had its demo on Steam and I couldn’t play it, it made me ponder again and think it is probably time to wait to get one when they announced it.

However during that small window I realised how many exclusive games are out there on the PS5 and so I would I be buying it to play maybe four or five games I couldn’t play on anything else I have at home - so if the price wasn’t that bad I would probably get one. I did it with the PS4 (and a PC Engine Duo) so I can’t say I haven’t in the past.

It’s not the price that concerns me, as much as the value I’d be getting out of what I paid for it. There used to be consoles I’d buy to play one or two games (see PC Engine Duo statement) but nowadays I don’t see the point in buying something to play video games plural, when really you’re playing video games singular.

I’ll wait for the PS5 Pro Plus. I can see that being a thing now sadly. Let’s see if they can break the quadruple digits for a games console price.

The thing that really takes the cake for me in regards to the PS5 Pro is the fact that you have to buy the vertical stand separately. It just stings me in a weird way, it’s laughable the way they’re nickel and diming everyone. Ridiculous really.

I wasn’t getting one anyway, but seeing the price and the fact that I’d have to buy a disc drive too just solidifies it for me. I barely play my PS5 as is, the console is already more than fine in terms of fidelity and performance so I don’t think they would’ve ever been able to convince me. I’ll make do with lower framerates and less fidelity. I play more PS1 games than PS5 ones and think they’re fine, so I’ll probably manage.

Play has limits.

I get why they’re doing this, but I feel the PS3 Sony era will be coming back for the PS6.
Steam Deck or PC have been the correct choices so far, and the lack of exclusives makes this console generation the most worthless.

Yeah, this is what truly angers me. This is a direction they’ve been doing since the PS5 and they’re trying to augment the price while reducing the things offered with the console.
I think this has a specific direction, but honestly, I don’t think who will get this apart from youtubers and streamers or extreme Sony fans who wouldn’t take a PC ever in their life (those people exist).

You may want to mention that to Sony

I was thinking of adding something along those lines:

Play has no Limits - provided your bank account doesn’t either!

I can understand why they’re releasing the machine - the way the console life cycles are now means that they need a new model to extend the life of it. You raise a very good point to the market they are targeting to sell it towards, but keeping it out the realm of most people seems like a pretty backwards way of selling it. It’s hard to believe this is the same company who used the lower price point as a selling point against its competition.

I’m 99% certain that they’re aiming for the rabid people that either want to get it as a status symbol, the people that absolutely simply must have an upgrade out of FOMO, or the high end enthusiast.

Sony know off the back of the PS4 Pro sales that at best they’re going to match the same ratio of PS5 Pro : PS5 as they did PS4 Pro : PS4, which I believe was about 20:80. I suspect that at best they’ve got a much more conservative estimate of PS5 Pro making up 5-10% (generously 10%) of total lifetime sales given that communicating the benefits of the PS4 Pro was an easier sell than this is.
