Imagine getting hyped to show up at a car event with your really cool vintage car and then the cyber truck guy shows up with a car that requires navigating like three submenus with 5 touch interactions on a stupid tablet to turn on the wipers to tell you that this is the future with his stupid match box looking ass car.
There was an old lady there taking a photo specifically of a rust stain on the trunk door.

I was watching the Studio Ghibli film Only Yesterday a few months ago and loved all the old Japanese cars featured in it. One of protagonists drives a Subaru R2 and the rest of the cast drives old light duty farm trucks of the time period. The cars are lovingly animated and besides that, the movie as a whole is a joy.
I need to get a new truck and I don’t want to. My current one has so many electrical problems that two repair shops can’t diagnose or fix. I can’t decide if I should get some toyota sedan and tow a flat bed trailer instead.
I was driving by the dealer and decided to finally figure out what that KN is once and for all! I was mildly surprised.
Anyone in the market for a JDM import? This company seems to be getting some cool ones.
All I want is a mini pickup truck but they aren’t legal to make or import in the US in a functional state.
Like you could get a tiny truck that was basically a sedan with a truck bed that had 22mph on a carbureted engine. It could be about 28 with fuel injection and better aerodynamics. It really grinds my gears. I wish that fuck in office would actually govern and a populist and change some car manufacturing requirements. The current ones have lead to the outsized and over priced monstrosities that we see on the road today. I’m still holding onto a gmc canyon with crank windows and broken AC because I thought for sure this would get legislated into something reasonable by now. don’t make me buy a fired Maverick. I don’t want to have a vehicle that reminds me of John McCaine
apparently they do import tiny trucks, and then get them plated for states that allow them. Unsure how that works in practice, but seems like they’ve thought about it.
They’ve also done a helpful video that outlines their process
They require a governing device that limits their speed to 25mph. They’re meant to be used in places like farms or construction sights for hauling materials locally. That might as well be worthless for me. It’s unfortunate.
Plenty of states do not require this. If yours does, you can buy one with a speed governor and then remove it once you get it inspected. There’s a decent aftermarket scene in the US of people who make chips to modify JDM imports’ ECUs in such ways. If the truck’s carbureted it will be some sort of mechanical limiter that will be easier to remove.
Plenty of cool US market smaller trucks like old Toyota 22r powered pickups that are reliable, stout, and cheap (assuming 2wd). Easier to get parts to keep them on the road versus importing a truck that will leave you stranded when something simple breaks
Ah thank you! Illinois has heavy restrictions. I’m in Illinois. I don’t think I’d get away with driving one on the highway. With all the farm boys around it seems like if you could get away with it they would be doing it at a cheap weird truck would be up their ally and I’ve never seen one ever here.
Maybe I’ll rent a cheap place in Indiana and register it there. Indiana plates might help me get away with it
I’m not sure you’d even want one on the highway doing American speeds. My friend had an imported Daihatsu Mira with out of state plates and that engine would be screaming at anything over 50mph. Wasn’t super enjoyable
That being said I still want one for around town Out of state plates is the easiest way in California too, unless you can find one that was sold here as a farm vehicle back in the day.
They look super fun. I’d love to roll up to some kid with a tricked out 1985 Lincoln town car, turn to him and give him the stoic what up head nod while driving that
All this talk of little Japanese cars reminded me of this little film the Mighty Car mods team put out a few months ago. Their experience of driving tiny cars even at Australian highway speeds (we generally max out at 110km/h so just under 70mph) made the concept sound novel but not quite comfortable, hah.
I’m in New Zealand, where you can just buy imports easier than getting NZ new cars. But yeah… the idea of driving one of those at highway speeds next to not-small cars is a bit terrifying.
This video is fantastic.
