controller talk

the only way to eliminate the squeaky d pad on the 8bitdo pro 2 once and for all is to lubricate it. I’ve finally done it and I wish I had a king time ago. I used a tooth pick to push lube down into the d pad crevice without taking apart the controller, since 8bitdo makes unserviceable user hostile puzzles

Where the flying truck is the original Neo Geo stick for Nintendo Switch? How has this basic need not been solved by Humanity since 2017? That’s the real puzzle.

Scored NSO genesis controller for $15, and the NSO famicom pads for $31

Is the only way to charge the famicom pads slotting them onto the sides of a switch like joycons or can you also just plug them in like normal controllers?

@“mindleftbody”#p125748 There isn't a USB socket on the controllers for charging - it has to be either via the Switch itself or a dock that supports Joy Cons. Even then the dock may not hold them perfectly.

The battery life on them is amazing, even a small charge keeps them going for a long time!

That’s a good question. Worst case scenario is a few years from now I mod them to charge via usb C

With many newly acquired NSO replica controllers with matching bluetooth receivers for said retro consoles, I‘m looking forward to putting them to great use… I’m waiting on bluetooth receivers coming in for N64 and Gamecube in early august. I‘m looking forward to finally playing GBA games on CRT with SEGA controllers (Golden Sun, Sonic Advance, Chu Chu Rocket, many more) and Gamecube ports of N64 games with an N64 controller (Animal Crossing, Cubivore, Doshin the Giant, maybe even Wind Waker and/or Twilight Princess, that’d be a trip).

@“treefroggy”#p125746 just how did you get your hands on a pair of NSO fami controllers for so cheap…. I don't wanna spend 90$ on ebay for them

@“diogo”#p125853 Mercari.jp + freight forwarding service… gonna be more like 40-50 with shipping, but I ordered other stuff with it.

The eBay prices are so totally whack. I got mine used. They sometimes appear for 30-50 on Mercari.

Wild how the NSO super famicom controller has ZL and ZR triggers, making it equivalent to an original PS1 controller. I have a PS1 blueretro adapter at my mailbox today, I am going to hook up my ps1 and perhaps give that combo a try. Obviously it would be nice for RPGs, ports from snes, and pretending to be playing the Nintendo PlayStation that never was, but with added shoulder keys, anything is possible. I already know the horizontal layout wouldn’t be ideal for armored core or kings field though.

@“treefroggy”#p126047 Thanks for mentioning the blueretro PS1 adapter. I was trying to find something like that last night and didn't have much luck after a quick search.

@“tomjonjon”#p126049 I am not sure why the humble bazooka ones are twice as expensive as the retro scaler ones

oops I spent $28 on an Xbox Duke controller because I didn't notice the shipping was ten bucks before I sent an offer for $18.

N64 NSO controller for $50+shipping for anyone who can’t catch when they’re on sale.

@“TomoftheFog”#p124592 Classy! Looks great!

@“HyggeState”#p127319 Thank you =)

I am going to start rebuilding a retro collection soon as well, just to have them. I am considering new options for storing them but that's going to be an ongoing project!

Mentioned before in fighting and shooting threads that I have this PS1 HORI Real Arcade stick that I want to try and modify into a universal stick. Well I finally took the first step in making it playable for anything besides tekken, and replacing the square gate with an octo gate. Now I can enjoy namco museum, makai mura, gradius, and oh so many arcade ports on PlayStation, which is the reason I bought this stick in the first place!

The octo gate was way overpriced for a dumb piece of 3D printed plastic that I had to further mod messily with a torch-heated utility knife by cutting off two of the corners to make it fit! (Like $15)

Though, I now realize I also want a Diamond gate for 4-way stick games, like makai mura…

@“BIGHEADMODE”#p120733 Minor update on my Switch controller journey:

I finally disassembled my Guilikit KingKong 2 Pro, to fix the sticking B button. Sur enough, when I disassembled it, I could see that the B button and Y button had really big sprues left on them--like easily half a millimeter. Not entirely sure why sprues would create a sticky/mushy feeling in that housing, but I clipped and sanded down the sprues with the nail clipper/nail file, re-assembled it, and now the sticking is gone!

The disassembly wasn't super simple but also wasn't horrible. There's an iFixit guide for about half the process, and most of it is intuitive. It has two ribbon cables that have to be removed, which is always a little scary for me. It's got a ton of little screws, so you'll need a jeweler's/IT screwdriver set. I really love Xiaomi's non-motorized tech screwdriver set, though you could also buy from iFixit. Anyway, I wouldn't say the Guilikit is more serviceable by design than, like, a PS4 controller. The Google Playdia controller was notably non-serviceable, but in general that's not an issue with controllers, even these days. The only thing that really makes it easy to repair is that they sell parts direct from China.

Anyway, I'm really posting about this because AFTER fixing the factory defect (and I did find a lot of other people online with the same defect), the controller has become my go-to. I have my 8-Bit Do Ultimate and the Guilikit sitting next to each other, and I end up going to the Guilikit every time. Why? One simple reason: waking from sleep.

They're BOTH supposed to wake from sleep, but the 8-Bit Do never actually does it. Is it a firmware issue? Can it be updated? Who knows? I own both controllers, so just like I never bothered with the Guilikit when it was sticking, I'm not gonna bother with the 8-Bit Do when it doesn't wake.

So--uh--I guess my recc is now with the Guilikit, with the caveat that at least the first batch has a recurring defect and the firmware should probably be updated. It's lighter than the 8-Bit Do in a way that makes it feel cheaper, but that also means it's less of a wrist strain.

I dunno. Honestly, they're both very similar. Guilkit's buttons are flatter. 8-Bit Do has the charge stand that you don't really need. If you had to pick one, it really would just be down to creature comforts. If the 8-Bit Do waking is a real issue and not just my unit, I'd definitely go Guilikit.

@“BIGHEADMODE”#p128911 that’s awesome. Love to hear it. Does it feel great to clip internal imperfections and solve a mechanical issue in your controller? It makes it feel even more like your own, even if it was just correction a factory defect.

Nowadays any time I disassemble a controller like that, I lubricate even the side shaft of face buttons. Beyond preventing sticking, it prevents that chalky micro plastic build up. It’s extremely obsessive. But if you’re taking it apart already, may as well!

I see it as just like oiling all my hand tools 🛠️, a necessary maintenance if you want them to last for generations :o)
