Cute disc based gimmicks

I'm pretty sure Segagaga had a warning that was an Enka song. It was very classy.

OH yeah, found it off the OST:

I thought this was going to be about stuff like Monster Rancher or Vib Ribbon.

Last year, my friends held a Vib Ribbon party where everyone brought their own unlabeled burned CDs,

we labeled them with a three digit code and made a dice algorithm to have the player roll to randomly select a track they had to play. It was really epic.

Wow. This is the most dramatic one yet. 機動戦士ガンダム ギレンの野望 Mobile Suit Gundam Gillen's Ambition (Sega Saturn)

also, did anyone else know that xbox and xbox 360 games have similar warnings if you put them in a DVD player?!

Some [Windows CE Dreamcast games](https://segaretro.org/Windows_CE) had their own unique warnings too. This is from South Park: Chef's Luv Shack.

The one that comes to mind for me is Kowloon's Gate. It‘s a multi-disc game, but it’s also a game that‘s steeped in Chinese metaphysics, so each of the four discs represents one of the Four Symbols. This isn’t a minor flourish, either. Where its contemporaries spread out the content of a game temporally (EG you‘d play through the story up through disc 1, change it to disc 2 and play more of the story until you needed to change to disc 3 etc.), Kowloon's Gate organizes things spatially (but metaphysically rather than physically), so you’re changing discs somewhat more frequently and in a way that doesn't map well linearly.

Also, I don't know if anybody's mentioned it yet, but VGMuseum has [a page dedicated to the warning screens you'd get if you tried to play a CD-based game on hardware that couldn't support it](http://www.vgmuseum.com/features/warn2/). They also have [a similar page for warning screens you'd get if you tried playing a (Game Boy, Neo Geo Pocket, WonderSwan) Color game on a non-Color system](http://www.vgmuseum.com/features/warn/).

@Just_Walli#10103 That‘s my video. I saw this website in the analytics for the video. I heard about the feature and figured I’d record all the available ones. I also have a PC Engine and a growing number of Super/Arcade System card games. I want to record all of the messages for the games I have and upload them. It's a daunting task though.

@SarahLJP are you recording the super cd error messages or all the “don't put this in your cd player” messages? maybe you already did the former? anyway, if you‘re looking for the cd player messages, please feel free to use my spreadsheet as a starting point! it’s not all the disc-based games of course, but it's quite a lot of them!

would love to hear updates to your progress. Also if you're planning on doing any other platforms, we're gonna slowly update this document over time too. I can give you editing access if it's of interest!

@exodus#12737 It’s the message you get when you have a lower version system card in the slot. I‘ve started recording the messages for the Super/Arcade system games I have. I’m not at all experienced with video editing though. It’s interesting, I only found this site because someone embedded my Youtube video here.

@SarahLJP#12718 seriously thank you for your archival work i cannot imagine how daunting that task is and it is such an interesting little snippet of history that I'm glad is being preserved

@Just_Walli#12759 I just started doing it. It doesn‘t look very good, because I can only capture them in composite right now. I pre-ordered a Polymega. Hopefully, it launches next month as they say. That would make the task quite a bit easier. Plus I would get better capture quality. I could more easily jump from game to game. Of course, if I got a Super SD System 3 I could get the messages for every game. I don’t know if you can force a lower BIOS version with that though.

@SarahLJP#12779 I just uploaded the message for Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys. 愛の劇場 (ai no gekijō) or “Theater of Love”. フィーナ&レア人形劇 (Fina & Rea ningyō geki) or “Fina & Rea Puppet Show”.

@SarahLJP#12845 I‘ve uploaded the one for Super Schwarzchild 2. It’s funny that she drops the card and then it kicks you back to the loading screen.

I love the animated ones - I took a day and went through as many as I could find by taking a system 1.0 card and putting it in my duo to force it lower.

Altered Beast CD is an odd game because it will ONLY play on 1.x, and fails to play on anything newer.

@exodus#12895 I heard that. I just bought a 1.0 and 2.0 card off Yahoo Auctions Japan via Zen Market. It‘ll be a while until they arrive. I only have a 2.1 card. I know there’s not much difference between 2.0 and 2.1. I just want all the cards.

nice - I have a 1.0 and two arcade cards, and that's it (and the pro is broken)

@exodus#12984 I have an Arcade Duo. Since I have a Super CD drive. I don‘t count the Arcade cards. They’re different from the version numbered cards. The loading screen doesn't change.

Maybe I'll get an Arcade Pro for the heck of it. Although the Pro is quite expensive. So, when the cards I just bought arrive I'll have a 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, and Arcade Duo. All of the official Japanese cards minus the Pro.

oops, it‘s my pro that works, the duo one doesn’t! So while using my turbo duo R I actually have to use the arcade pro, which still in 2021 feels somehow “overkill” to me, ha ha.

@exodus#13001 The Arcade cards are a different beast entirely. Since they add 16 Mb of DRAM. They're technically still v3.0 Super System cards with something extra.

@SarahLJP#12848 Here‘s a playlist of all the videos I’ve uploaded. I'm only uploading the interesting ones. The ones worth uploading. There are many that just show a static image with no audio at all.

You can go here if you want to see all of them. The same site @Just_Walli posted.
