Different representations of real world places in games

They knew the place like the back of their hands, lol.

In Koudelka and Shadow Hearts, the monastery in the town of Aberystwyth is based on the real life St David’s Cathedral in the city of St David’s about 20 miles away, also the UK’s smallest city. The real life town of Aberystwyth, as far as I’m aware, doesn’t have a monastery but it does have the national library, which would also be a cool setting.

Some fun views of Atlanta in Midnight Club 3.

I love the short version of several iconic skyscrapers lol

Plus the Vortex, a great burger place around here.

The famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany appears in video games quite often, and when you see it once you’ll never unsee it. It’s everywhere. Here are some examples:

You find it in the background of City Connection, in which a lady drives really fast and throws oil barrels at the police.

In Radical Dreamers, the Satellaview sequel to Chrono Trigger, Surge and his pals sneak into the castle in the form of Lynx’s Mansion to steal the Frozen Flame.

In Outrunners we drive all over the world, and when we enter Germany we can see the castle in the distance.

In Resident Evil the castle keep appearing as paintings. By interacting with the painting in the original game it is even claimed to be the zombie filled mansion itself!

In Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within you enter the literal Neuschwanstein Castle for reasons.

That’s just from the top of my head, do you have any examples?

We’ve come to coin the term “surprise Neuschwanstein” in this household and it gets uttered a little bit too often, haha.

Of course there is the board game Castles of Mad King Ludwig. I’ve only played once, but it’s a good one:

There is also Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, where they have the German “Schloss Ritter” (lit: Castle Knight; that’s how subtle Gabriel Knight is).

Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West did a good job of modeling hundreds of real world landmarks in the American West. I love that they modeled so many of our great national parks from Yellowstone to Big Sur. it’s really cool to just be climbing a mountain and looking down and being like “oh hey there’s Horsehoe Bend”

Or running around and stumbling across The Three Sisters

There’s also a lot of manmade buildings in disrepair from places everywhere from Colorado Springs to LA. Here’s LA City Hall (thanks, Eric Garcetti)

Here’s the SF financial district

And the palace of fine arts

Now that is cathartic

The Palace of Fine Arts which is already an intentional architectural ruin, being reduced to an actual (game) ruin is quite nice

ah yeah there’s another one I’d posted about elsewhere and forgot. lol
stage sucks btw. very glitchy. I always fall into an impossible corner of the map when playing 150cc or 100cc.

Was watching Alicia play Puzzle Bobble 4 and once more we are blindsided by another “surprise Neuschwanstein”.
