@“sabertoothalex”#p158582 I think you‘ve pretty well gleaned it. Each island is its own semi-self-contained episode. It’s a cool structure, one that I really like in a game. Go out on a lil adventure, and then come back to a hub to reset and relax. Glad to hear you're chilling with it!
@“sabertoothalex”#p158582 It‘s still my favourite. The mood and its fairy-tale, small stories pacing really suit a portable console.
And, contrary to everyone else, I still can’t get into VIII but I realise I'm in the minority on that one.
As per the discussion from last week's episode…
Reply to this comment and I will add further options to the poll. I'm starting with Oda Eiichirō of _One Piece_ because that's who Tim suggested on the podcast, and Ryōko Kui of _Dungeon Meshi_ because it's who I thought of.
Doesn't have to be a mangaka either, I guess!
You can vote for your singular fave or all of your faves, or change your vote as more options are added, this poll will allow all of that.
@“Karasu”#p158585 Yeah this is one thing I've definitely noticed, with the PS1-only crowd usually being kinda aggro about it lol. Though I can see having a hard preference for one over the other, it seems like the 3DS version is a real proper remake with a ton of changes!
@"Gaagaagiins"#p158664 Both are too good and I refuse to decide. Let them both do it.

I enabled it so that you could vote for all options, so go right ahead
Speaking about the PS1 original, I always heard the intro for VII was as long as hell, but most of the criticism I tend to hear is the presentation being an extension of a SNES aesthetic, instead of fully 3D rendered with seamless FMV cutscenes like Final Fantasy.
The 3DS definitely tightens both of these elements up, also playing a section of the game on the go or in small stints is well suited to the 3DS.
I think VII has the best payoff for the typical "enter a new town, figure out there's something off here, go dungeon crawling and resolve the issue." Without giving much additional away, there is a more obvious and rewards payoff for completing these story loops.
@“Gaagaagiins”#p158664 somewhat sincerely, ONE
It will never happed because there is just too much money involved, but ideally – for me – it would be somebody we have never heard of before with an opportunity to catch a Big Break and show their new and cool and interesting and different works off to the world.
@“rejj”#p158909 perhaps a humble yet capable poster on a niche video game forum….?
I don‘t want Dragon Quest to change styles at all! hone the toriyama art or make it 90’s style again.
@“Gaagaagiins”#p158664
It would be sick to see either one of their takes on the material, but honestly, if we're okay with Miura's studio taking over for him on Berserk, I'm also okay with Toriyama's assistants taking things over for him.
Maybe the issue here for me is a lack of imagination for what dragon quest can be on my end, it never really had the reinvention of itself that Final Fantasy had about four times (to the credit of Dragon Quest I might add).
This boss had such a unique visual design! Feel like I’ve never seen anything like it in DQ before. Looks cool on PS1 as well

I officially love the DQVII protag design too. His pointy hat and shoes are very fun.
Miyake kicked out of Dragon Quest.
Huge news for the franchise and, in my humble opinion, worrying news for the franchise and its publisher. But we’ll see who is put in charge.
godddd i wish i could ask my cat if he would sleep in the slime bed cuz i kinda need it
The death of Toriyama put Dragon Quest on my brain, and instead of another run of Dragon Quest 3 on GBC, I decided to dust off my 3DS and play Dragon Quest 8. I had tried to start it twice before to no avail: once on PS2, where its non-portable nature discouraged me, and once on 3DS where the time wasn’t right.
Having loved Dragon Quest 11 on Switch a whole bunch, I have to say Dragon Quest 8 is surpassed as a game. It feels like I’m playing an incomplete development version of DQ 11. Which, when you think about it, it kind of is. I’m still liking it a whole bunch, but playing DQ11 before it really sours the experience.
On a final note, holy shit is the 3DS THE platform for Dragon Quest. In Japan, every single numbered title was available on that console. This is bonkers! There’s a port of the mobile versions of Dragon Quest 1,2,3 that only came out in Japan, Dragon Quest 10 had a cloud version(?!) and there’s the crazy Japan-only Dragon Quest 11 version. Man I wish I could replay DQ 11 on 3DS. Guess I gotta learn Japanese!
Taking something from @treefroggy I’ve been wanting to play a DQ while reading Dragon Ball. I think the main candidates are V and IX atm. I played some of V a couple years ago on mobile and some of IX years and years ago. I’m leaning toward V because I feel like it’s a bit more manageable than IX(my impression of that game is that it’s huge).
If I go with V then the question of which version looms. SNES, DS, PS2. I feel like after tearing through the remake of IV I’m a little burned out on the look of the DS games so maybe I’ll go with SNES or PS2.
