Ep. 233 - Pod of Casters, an ICS SNK KOF Roundtable

episode exceeded expectations. more like this in the future, please. deep dives into specific and specifically weird game series by cool people who are knowledgeable about them.

but wheeeere oh where did you find the English lyrics version of Iori's Allegory of the Wind song, @"esper"#11 ?? asking as a [known Iori-liker](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/420-best-fashion-in-video-games/22).

@“exodus”#p67712 oh I have more than 2 hours‘ worth of experience with KOF thanks to owning a Dreamcast on launch day along with a little disposable money and a Best Buy employee discount. Never had the cops called on me for playing Dream Match ’99 with my friends but sure did have my friend‘s stepdad come down and scream at everyone because he found the announcer’s voice annoying.

Which, tbf it was a bit annoying.

KOF 2002 was my first proper taste of the series circa 2007 when I bought a PS2 and I was a lazy student with a lot of time for videogames.

I deeply appreciate how the announcer says "winner" as "weiner".

I must say, my exposure to SNK was at a relatively young age. I was aware of the Neo Geo after reading about it in magazines, and adjacently to that Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown were the two franchises that, to me, were most notably associated with the company as a whole. Metal Slug in particular was oft-quoted as being hard as nails and for a time was the benchmark for hard games much as Dark Souls has been in the last decade or so.

My feelings on the recent acquisition are deeply torn. On one hand SNK are arguably at the top of their game but as others have said I don't want to give money to the Saudi Prince. On one hand I can buy physical releases preowned but on the other hand many of their contemporary rereleases are digital only. Similarly I would love to get the lavish KOF book that Bitmap Books have recently announced, as I also have the excellent Metal Slug one, but it's morally against my principles. Torn indeed.

this gets really special in the games where king's voice actor doubles as announcer.

"select the _odor_"
"_lady?_ **go!**"
the "**wiener!**" comes up in other games. she must have gotten notes after a while, haha...

whereas the nests era ('99-2001) is my favorite period of the series, i think my single favorite game may be xi. which of course is one of the hardest to actually get a legitimate copy of. though @nothingxs has some things to say about easy methods to play it online these days...

@“𝔞𝔷𝔲𝔯𝔢𝔩𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔨𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔦𝔤𝔞𝔫”#p67920 which of course is one of the hardest to actually get a legitimate copy of.

I mean I wouldn't say it's THAT hard, you just need to have 20 dollars (and a ps2 I guess): https://www.ebay.com/itm/304440617376?epid=11105&hash=item46e21329a0:g:4eAAAOSwTR1iVbI1

@“whatsarobot”#p67828 The SNK wiki's got you on that.

There‘s been a copy of XI in my local retro store for as long as I remember, and I’ve never felt inclined to buy it.

XIII has remained my favourite since its release. It felt like the zenith for all of KOF up until that point, and it was both accessible and mechanically deep. It's also one of the most beautiful games I've ever played.

@“nothingxs”#p67924 ah thanks! i saw that in the show links, but i’m looking for the audio, which esper spliced into the episode. unless it’s on that page and i am missing it? in which case i apologize for being a moron.

i never played any of the KOF games in spite of having them burned for my dreamcast. this episode was so good. i‘ll probably never get into fighters, but dang i’ll watch people play them for hours now. nice one.

I literally know nothing about KoF, but loved hearing a bunch of people talking about something they all care about so deeply, and not hold back on getting deep into the woods about it.

Can't remember if it was mentioned at all in the episode, but was there a mention of which one to start with if one is curious about dipping their toes into the series?

@“whatsarobot”#p67933 i just ripped it off youtube lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJA8A0VBER4

@“esper”#p67953 thank yoooou! lol of course i tried looking there first, but i guess i was expecting there to be an all-English version, and did not patiently sit through the Japanese. 反省します。

@“Shaneus”#p67951 No mention was made. KOF 98 is the “classic” one so that‘s a good place to start for sure. I don’t think KOF 97 is a bad place to start either though! (that's where I started)

@“antillese”#p67787 I’m a huge booster of Guilty Gear: -STRIVE-. The most current Guilty Gear is always the best Guilty Gear to start with. Strive’s gameplay is fast and explosive and I think it is enjoyable at several different skill tiers. Go give it a shot. DM me if you want a sparring partner who can show you the ropes.

That sounds intriguing! I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks but after that I might give it a try. Strive got me hooked through the music and the visuals and I just thought *maybe I should give fighting games a try!* I just got distracted by something else. I might take you up on your offer in a couple weeks!

I really want some of those chips

Even though it was different from the normal format, I really enjoyed this episode!

I always thought KoF was a really cool series but it also seemed difficult to get into. I‘ve always had trouble getting into fighting games (which isn’t helped by the fact that FGC folks seem to just suggest things like “oh, just spend 40-60 hours in training mode before playing”) - I can handle things like Street Fighter II where there isn‘t a ton of characters so beating the game as everyone isn’t a big deal, but with KoF I have to pick THREE characters and it's always a lot more challenging. I can handle hard games (Beatmania IIDX is one of my favorites) but fighting games just play in a way my brain has trouble understanding.

I have '94 on Wii, '97 for Saturn, '98 for Dreamcast, 2002/03 for Xbox, and XIII for 360. I've beaten all of them but '94 (which I should really get around to) at least once but I certainly haven't internalized those characters!
Hearing everyone's enthusiasm for the game makes me want to play more (or should I say SNK Playmore?) but I'm not sure how much I love losing fights for two hours straight while struggling to pull off super moves. But I might fire up a KoF and give the series another go!

@“esper”#p67953 Is it a problem that I can sing this entirely from memory……?

video version is up!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d22fALkIdY

i put some work into this one, lots of KOF. i have been informed by andres however that the dude who captured most of this footage is kind of a Bad Name in the arcade scene because a fair chunk of his stuff is probably tool assisted. sorry everybody, try to appreciate it on an aesthetic level tho.

@“Shaneus”#p67951 If you can stomach who the money goes to (which I do not judge anyone on), The King of Fighters XV is ABSOLUTELY, head and shoulders above every other KOF game right now in terms of both accessibility, features, playability… it's just about the perfect KOF game (save for the fact Iori is kind of weak in it, which for some may be an argument for my statement).

If you just want to download the game and play against someone else, try KOF 98 on Fightcade2. That's the real OG classic.

@"esper"#p68016 It's fine. People who do 1CC/longplays mostly make fun of Schaluchi anyways, since his are less legit. I've never seen a problem with his longplays for entertainment purposes, but I do wish he would be transparent about the fact they're not legit. :P

@"kory"#p67998 I wasn't kidding when I told Brandon that I want him to buy some and I'll pay for some. They sound delicious as hell.

all right, you guys convinced me. i‘ve never given kof a real shot, though it’s always seemed cool. and it just so happens that everyone in my house is sick today, so i‘m going to really sit down with kof ’97, (which is the one i can play right now.)
