Re: the Bruce Spingsteen / Republican anecdote; I distinctly remember some 10ish years ago that the far-right, extremist British National Party were using famously hard-socialist band Manic Street Preacher's song “If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next” as a means to vilify Muslims, refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Without any hint of irony.

I only let my imaginary children listen to episodes that include references to DARK SAVIOR :ear:

@“esper”#p79557 alien technology in video games

That comment by Tim at the tail end there about the juxtaposition of Covenant and Human tech reminded me of this trope that I've seen manifest in several games (for all I know this is extremely well documented and discussed, possibly even named): the balanced triumvirate of three sci-fi factions: the grungy military-tech humans (or humanoids), the hyper-advanced (usually fanatically religious) alien wizards, and bugs (or other similar biological/animalistic force). Off the top of my head, you've got your Humans/Covenant/Flood, Terrans/Protoss/Zerg, and I would even throw in Meccaryns/Sea Reapers/Citizen Kabuto maybe. I'm sure there's some ur-example these are drawing from (I know Blizzard _loves_ to take some heavy uhhhhh inspiration for its worldbuilding....)

Sad to say, but I'm with Brandon on this one re: nascar...probably nothing inherently wrong with the sport, but I get some bad vibes. I will only acknowledge stock car racing that involves vocals by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi.

Just as an fyi, nascar did ban confederate flags from their venues back in 2020. So at least they're trying to address some of that badness

Formula E’s ‘Attack Mode’ boost zones are awesome.

https://youtu.be/ZI2j7_-ILKk

They were devised as a means to an end, with pit stops no longer being necessary and a new strategic element needed to take their place. In the four years since, Attack Mode has shaped the sport so much that even when in-race fast-charging is introduced next year (and brings with it the return of pit stops), they’re apparently keeping it around in some form.

The new qualifying format is also very gamey. The first half is mostly a traditional shootout, but after that the top eight compete in head-to-head duels, effectively racing each others’ ghosts:

Also the best subway is Glasgow. A big circle round the city where your only choices are clockwise or anti-clockwise.

I know it‘s the easiest target in the world but you don’t have to pretend to like NASCAR. It's a big loud ugly sport made for racists to get drunk to.

@“esper”#p79557 Spencer asks: Why did so many companies throw their hat in the console ring during the fifth generation? (35:28)

Re: the panel's Spencer riff. **Tower** would be a pretty good forum handle.

@“Mnemogenic”#p79591 NASCAR’s ok. I totally get what you mean, but if you’re a non-sports person then all sport kind of looks like that. If you’re not a motor racing person then all motor racing kind of looks like that. If you’re an endurance racing fan then Formula 1 looks like that. If you’re a Formula 1 fan then Indycar looks like that. If you’re an Indycar fan then NASCAR looks like that. If you’re a NASCAR fan then oh no wait I think you might be sort of right sorry never mind.

Third post sorry sorry - I'm posting as I listen.

Very pleased to hear all the positive PaRappa talk. I would say that Um Jammer Lammy and PaRappa 2 are much more forgiving in terms of timing, although the first game is still do-able if you time your inputs with the mindset of _releasing_ the button at the right time rather than pushing. Almost like a guitar strum, which is interesting considering where they went next.

Covid and its many lockdowns got me back into playing guitar 'properly' beyond power chords and _just hitting the thing_, and my entire learning process was playing along to Um Jammer Lammy. It's a good one to play along with! [I want one of these so bad.](http://bunnyears.net/guitar/electric-guitars/2000-fernandes-ujl-2000/)

I gotta a lot of thoughts so here they are unprompted!

My favorite subway is I guess the redline cause I rode it the most.

A game about rats or pigeons or perhaps rats, pigeons and mythical tubes that don't do much but benignly float through the air would be a pretty good NY Game. I recommend the book [RATS: Observations on the History & Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants](https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781582344775)
Rats are super fascinating. Also one time I walked up to the subway at Pershing Square in LA and there were thousands and thousands of rats crawling out of it, terrifying people and crawling over passed out people who did not care. It was a sight to see. I assume there was construction or something driving them out.

Speaking of LA. Yeah what a place to drive at night. I picked up my roommie from downtown at 12am on a Sunday/Monday night and it took me about 7 minutes instead of 60. Definitely recommend that time of day to do your driving. Also that city was surprisingly quiet on Sunday mornings too. Guess no one is going to church! I did think that Milwaukee would always make a cool race in a story and have a couple synopses for one. You got some cool twisty interstates weaving together, a good bendy tunnel, some big ol' bridges and the backdrop of a lot of old industrial architecture and Lake Michigan.

My game spending habits are as follows: I think about a game I might want to play. I then think that I could donate that money to charity instead and play a game on my backlog. I don't buy the game. Once a year I might buy one. I bought Elden Ring. I'll also buy games friends made to support them, but that seems different.

When it comes to villains designing platforms, those robot nerds didn't know how to do anything else! They are gear heads! building nonsensical moving platforms is their thing. They don't have anything else. They desperately need someone to use their machines.

When I was in high school the kids really liked it when I memorized and sang Parappa music to them. So, I think it gets an extra point or two for that.

Happy hour vibes is a great descriptor for IC the podcast, and many of the threads of the forum. This was such a fun episode. Thank you Brandon for mentioning the game Courier Crisis, because it is new to me and I now that I know it exists I have a burning need to play it. That Joseph Gordon Levitt movie Premium Rush is a fun time, too, btw.

Subway talk??? I haven‘t listened yet but the best subway system that I’ve encountered is the Oslo subway. Oslo isn‘t a big city by any means, so maybe it’s kind of cheating, but it‘s kind of impressive how overkill it is, and I think @"billy "#201 will appreciate parts of the design if they like Glasgow’s loop design.

I had the pleasure of being showed around Oslo for a few days by a dear friend of mine who grew up there and was happy to act as a tour guide, which also meant using the subway system a good deal as well (along with trams and at least looking at the buses!)

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/kzwEfeY.png]

Oslo's downtown core is covered by the complicated looking section in the middle, Der Ringen Des Trainelungen, where all of the current lines overlap. Stations that service multiple metro lines or multiple metro lines overlapping for part of their route isn't unique, but I don't believe I've heard of or seen another city's transit system do it to the same degree of density of overlap, or anything like that double looping downtown congestion relief line that can take you the full way around clockwise along the loop like that Line 5 one does.

If this looks confusing, basically how it works is that for the busiest stops within the downtown core, and thus the ones that it would be most convenient to take short trips between to zip around the downtown core really fast, are serviced by as many lines as possible, as many as 5 lines (and an extra looping section of Line 5). Meaning, depending on your station of origin as well as the station at your destination, you can likely get on multiple trains that will be passing through your destination. If you're going from Majorstuen station (on the bottom left of the loop) to Blindern station (on the left side of the loop) you can get on a train heading counter clockwise that's operating on either Line 5, or Line 4. If you're going from Majorstuen station to Jernbanetorget station (along the bottom of the loop), you can get on the first train available that's heading in the right direction, since all lines overlap at that station.

During peak hours and because this is so well automated, a train is coming into the station literally once a minute, and the trains operate at a super high efficiency in general since instead of most people waiting in the same station for a train on the single Line they need to get to their destination, there is always a mixture of people who can get on the first available train or on multiple viable trains or who are waiting for room on a specific Line, distributing riders more evenly across the whole network.

The Lines themselves go out to different kinds of residential areas but the extremities of the fast and high capacity subway/heavy rail system (as opposed to the trams and buses) go out quiet an impressive distance, serving what most of us probably understand as suburbs. My friend took me all the way to the end of the Frognersteren Line 1, which is the subway line that goes up to the highest elevation in the world. It basically snakes through a lightly populated, _Girl With The Dragon Tattoo_ antagonist ass rich people suburb/private land area, along the black metal ass forests.

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/763Aw70.jpeg]

This is the station at the end of that Line.

So basically as someone whose main experiences with transit systems is the Toronto Transit Commission, which is mostly bullshit, the Oslo Metro was downright utopian by my standards.

Oh hey, I used to work with Paul. Cool guy; small world.

I think another big reason so many people got in on the 5th generation/cd era of consoles was Myst. It sold a million copies in the first year, and every multimedia producer felt the winds change.

I also think that’s how we got real experimental treasures like [D](https://www.mobygames.com/game/d), [Obsidian](https://www.mobygames.com/game/obsidian), [Kowloon’s Gate](https://www.mobygames.com/game/kowloons-gate), [Prince Interactive](https://www.mobygames.com/game/prince-interactive), etc.
