Ep. 358 - Soak the Hippo, Save the World, with Ash Parrish

I had a German grandmother. Playmobil and (later) Kinder eggs were what she got me while she had her wits about her and was traveling. After her stroke, I would get either nonsensical gifts (the same triangle puzzles two years in a row) or genius gifts (an almanac, which I read so much of, and, in an especially insightful move that was pure luck because I never mentioned I had the game, the Dragon Age strategy guide).

So, yeah, bourgeois. But also nostalgic for me, who otherwise had mismatched Legos.

Does El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron count as Jewish mythology? That was my immediate thought

Fellow Gilbert Syndrome haver here, I think when there’s liver damage you get elevated bilirubin, but without knowing his numbers (HIPAA violation incoming) we’ll never know - for his sake I hope it is

Also can El Shaddai be classified as Judaic-adjacent? I feel like the dead sea scrolls were written by like gnostic jewish people no?
(not that I really enjoyed the game at all, playing it on the ps3 was especially a mistake)

I would like to mention that there actually is a solid Zelda game where you can play as Zelda and it’s called Cadence of Hyrule

It seems like Episode 277 - The Hitness got uploaded to the main page instead of this week’s episode, which is great for me because I got to listen to a whole extra Insert Credit while thinking it was new the whole time.

It was a little odd that the panel were talking about the Metroid Prime remaster as though it had just come out. I was like did they do another one??

Yes, I love me some Ash episodes! As progressive as the show generally is, I love it when people with other lived experiences show up to be their awesome selves. Need more of that in every corner.

ā€œThose people need to hurry up and get in the groundā€ made me feed a coffin :joy:

Loved the episode - Always enjoy when Ash is on!

Megalopolis described as Hideo Kojima directing cutscenes for SimCity has my curiosity piqued.

Yep, I was also yelling ā€œEl Shaddai!ā€ while making my coffee today. I’m definitely not an expert, but from what I understand the storyline follows the Book of Enoch, which is an ancient Jewish text detailing the apocalypse? Unsure where the skinny jeans come in there, though

The skinny jeans represent binding oneself with the tefillin.

(if equating a religious practice to skinny jeans is offensive to anybody I’ll delete this)

There was talk of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Taika Waititi, and indigenous peoples so I feel the need to highlight the existence of the Māori dub for Moana since they got at least a handful of the English VO cast to return for it.

The awkward part is actually finding it. Maybe it’s on the disc version but if you have Disney+ you have to go to the Extras tab to find it. Either way it’s a neat thing they did that didn’t have to be done and I don’t see it talked about enough.

Ah yeah, I thought that was cool! I’m glad they did it. I watched Prey in Comanche even though the dub was a bit awkward, because how often do you get to experience that with a big budget movie?

Gonna guess there aren’t a lot of professional Comanche actors skilled in dubbing, if only due to a failure of the market to provide them opportunity to profitably practice that trade.

One of the problems I’ve perceived when watching a lot of these movies is there seems to be a dearth of native speakers of american indigenous languages, so you can really tell the difference between someone doing it after being instructed vs someone doing it naturally (you see this divide in reservation dogs for example, when you get a one-off character who’s Very Old and clearly a regular speaker of the language). But it’s worth doing no matter how natural it sounds, cause it will promote more people to learn. that’s how languages like irish and welsh are slowwwwly slowwwly trying to crawl back as well.

@Jaffe I only call it by the full name Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda.

If I had infinite money, my Zelda game would basically just be a remake of Metal Gear Solid. Ganon has a big island fortress with some kind of artifact that will destroy Hyrule, and Zelda has to infiltrate and sabotage the project.

A lot of games in the series have had stealth-focused sections, but those are always underwhelming for me because they just feel like minigames. If Nintendo focused on stealth action as a core mechanic, that could end up being a great fit for her character! Maybe she gets the standard hookshot/bombs/etc for puzzles but also has some Hyrule Warriors style magic for combat. And you could combine her BOTW look with Sheik to make a pretty cool outfit.

Now I’m mad that the thing I just thought of doesn’t exist.

Final Fantasy XVI is an adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Clive was a favored son, sold into slavery by a vengeful family member, he starts having haunting dreams and visions, then gets taken in by Cid and becomes second in command, then reunites with his brother and realizes he changed. Hope they cast Donny Osmond in the sequel.

Tim’s Zelda pitch is the concept for eastward dungeons, a game I post about on here more than I thought.

Brandon, Ash. Jujutsu Kaisen really did become nonsense. The one thing I will really give it is I love how Gege’s art turned out by the end.

Finished Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom the other night and I loved it - don’t get the hate on this episode. It’s a refreshing take on the Zelda formula and I didn’t for a second think it was a cop out. Enjoyed it more than TotK!

I guess if you’re going to make a Big Epic Zelda Game it makes sense you don’t want your action hero who’s dying all the time to be the princess, so that’s why you just use Sheik again. That’s how you justify Princess Zelda getting into the action and getting her hands dirty. Hell, even make it a magical transformation if you need to (Magical Girl trope activate!). Then you can eat your princess and have her, too!
