oh, well, I’m hosting the next episode while Jaffe is out on assignment, so there may still be weed jokes, apologies
also listening a little further, one of my favorite Sonic Facts (RIP Snake Facts) is that Rad Mobile (in the arcade) was actually Sonic’s first appearance, before his own game came out
also also, good on Merritt for coming to the defense of Lifeforce, which is a not a good movie but one that definitely never stops being interesting. Brandon’s probably already seen it, but on the subject of Tobe Hooper never quite getting to Texas Chainsaw heights again (I also love part two), The Funhouse might be his closest swing. it hits at a lot of the same thematic stuff that Texas Chainsaw does – namely American familial dysfunction and generational trauma – while also being an effectively sleazy and unsettling horror movie. maybe that combo was Tobe’s wheelhouse – worth a mention in the time of year when people are specifically looking for this stuff, anyways
Maybe you want to argue against the game as a whole but the Tower of Latria prison level of Demons Souls was a horror game pretty much in every way to think of a horror game. Horrible oppressive atmosphere, spooky sound effects, jump scares, the octopus face jailers, quite horrifying if you ask me.
I think Brandon was arguing against souls games generally because the clunky controls take you out of the experience? I can kind of see that, but also I think most people who get deep into the jail will have done so after at least a few other levels and should be used to the controls by then. But even if you know the controls I think the atmosphere in the level is not just tense but scary.
this is personal preference but i really like his salem’s lot, though it skirts what might be called a movie.
I’ve somehow never seen that one, @MoH (I guess not “somehow,” I didn’t come around to horror until I was in my 30s) – I’ll bump up the priority then, I do really think that Tobe had a weird & worthwhile lens
(unrelated, the Souls games, Bloodborne & Elden Ring are absolutely horror-adjacent based on vibes & creature design alone)
I think Last House On Dead End Street might be grimier and nastier than Texas Chainsaw Massacre but it’s not really a better movie
haven’t seen that one but will use the opportunity to say a big part of what makes texas chainsaw massacre nasty (to me) is the setting outside the house (sorry texans). rural texas landscapes make me feel a bit bleak, especially when coupled with the “our economy used to be the slaughterhouse” vibe.
Oh come on, Brandon is clearly George Martin. Jaffe is Paul.
To keep this (more) on topic, I genuinely can’t remember ever feeling scared by a video game. Am I alone in this? Maybe I just avoid those kinds of games or something.
Nah, I’m Ringo. I don’t play guitar but I keep the tempo.
Who’s the Billy Preston of Insert Credit?
Her name is in the thread title!
Who’s the Pete Best?
Ringo also knows exactly how much stuff a song needs and keeps everything balanced to highlight every part as needed. Seems appropriate for a host!
Yeah man the house is cooler than the gore and kills etc
Vincent Diamante
Jumping in somewhat belatedly to briefly remark on the (frankly jarring) news. I just want to say I have a tremendous amount of respect for how the team dealt with this. Grace under emotional fire.
I also don’t get scared by videogames because I never play spooky games.
Except for Porky Pig’s Haunted Holiday, which is scary for another reason.
Also, Jaffe can’t be Paul. It’s incoherent! But Jaffe also isn’t Ringo.
In short, I do not know who Jaffe is but he certainly is.
I’ve been running through old episodes from 2012-2013 and wow Tim’s energy is so different… He responds to every question with “that’s a good question”
The last few months it really felt like he wanted to shut everything down with “I don’t care”
Honestly I think the vibe will improve! Hope you guys can find a rotating list of guests for each episode or even a new long-term member!
Agree completely, say whatever you like about Dark Souls, but Demon’s Souls is a horror game, it wants you to die after all
