sure, as a courteous reminder for people not to be weird about a podcast. I dont think your concerns are really manifesting, thankfully
Gotta say, my heart sank when I realized that the announcement of Timās departure wasnāt an off season April Fools joke. Like many others, I found the show through (the hellscape that is) the Action Button Discord. But hey! Iāve come to love the show for Jaffe, Frank, and Brandon. It truly rocks. And while I havenāt been active recently, Iāve come to find the Insert Credit forums to be such a cool fucking place to be.
Hereās to whats next!
dude, this was THE movie that freaked me out when i was a kid and like you only because i saw bits and pieces of it. i put it off for years because it always gave me a visceral reaction. believe it or not i watched it for the first time last week over the course of an afternoon, and was surprised to find the movie is just as disgusting and off-putting as i always thought it would be. very good and effective, though.
i should also note the grudge, the ring, and the exorcist had similar effects on me despite having not seen them at the time.
Unfortunately, this isnt the only space on the internet that listens to the podcast. Accusations of abuse should not be taken lightly and they shouldnāt be made lightly either.
Why do we all inherently understand that frank is George? Brandon doesnāt even map that nearly onto Paul but it feels so right
Also, in fairness, as the torchbearer of web 1.0, insert credit was destined to encounter some (probably) dumbass drama between its members
This one may be silly.
For context, I grew up in a conservative household, meaning I wasnāt allowed to watch or play much of anything. I remember cartoons being forbidden because of characters saying ācrapā.
The ending of the first Uncharted game terrified me because I hadnāt ever played a horror game. It may seem timid now, and doubly so knowing I was a teenager who bought the game with the money from my first job.
I do not know how I was hired, I was below the legal working age!
the original re2 when that licker busts through the two-way mirror in the interrogation room. i played it at my grandmaās house and the tv room had this huge windows along the wall and i was so scared lol
recently i finally worked up the nerve to replay re2make cause iām so scared of mr x. i havent made it to him yet but this time iām going alogn with a video walkthrough thatās been helping to feel a little more distance
PT was very scary. But it was also one of those games that was simple enough to play that I would give the controller to non-gamer friends and have them play through it. So in that way I think of the game very fondly because I got to play this weird freaky game with people who had no idea what they were in for
and no matter how many times I played it there was always something that surprised me and made me jump
I am so sorry to hear about this exchange. I hope everyone is doing okay. I love this show and the community itās helped create ā This lack of tolerance for careless, hurtful behavior is certainly a huge piece of what makes the show and this forum special, so I definitely appreciate your willingness to call it out. I chipped in some financial support to help kickoff this next era. <3
Additionally, and I hope this isnāt taken in the wrong way, but along with everyone else, I hope Tim is okay. Obviously Iām not defending his behavior, but more just a concern around the root of it.
Anyway, scariest game for me was the Resident Evil remake for Nintendo Gamecube since it came out when I was just a wee little tiny baby kid (6th grade I think). I distinctly remember being paralyzed as the camera angle shifted at the top of the stairs of the crypt and the game expected me to continue forwardā¦
Being a good host and being a good panelist are two very different skill sets. I am confident that I am a good host.
I never enjoyed horror games, but I love horror and I love horror in games. I played Minecraft as a teenager when it was still in beta and I donāt think Iāll ever have the same experience again. The feeling of being deep in a cave, surrounded by unknowns, and the constant threat of an (at the time) completely silent creeper blowing you up is spooky. The game was a little harder in general. It was harder to heal, and resources were far more scarce. Itās the threat of losing real time like Frank mentioned, combined with a fat dose of The Unknown.
I understand and even agree with all the changes they made like giving creepers step sounds, but caves donāt feel like a threat anymore in the game and thatās a bit of a shame.
Hah! You are an AWESOME host. Itās too bad Ash demonstrated that she is an AWESOME host as well.
Now I want a no holds barred IC host showdown, or at least a tag-team.
Maybe a special episode with no panelists. Hosts only
No answers, only questions.
now iām imaging the panelists having to give like, a list of games and then the host has to figure out a question that fits that answer. like reverse jeopardy
I will risk saying most of us commenting were bullied (my case) or in a bad relationship at some point in our lives.
Whenever we see something like this, I think we end up trying to be supportive. Itās kind of a trigger. In your case especially because you, Jeffe and Frank were always kind and emphatic people.
Very brief feelings on The Situation, echoing both that Timās hostility got pretty weird for listeners in recent times, and also that I hope he takes care of himself because those things always come from somewhere. Likewise, most important that yaāll take care of yourselves as old friends ā Iāll be here for the long haul just listening and posting and giving a few bucks. I donāt get to post as much as I used to but I absolutely adore this place, always. Youāre doin good out there kids
On the EPISODE, Merritt is always a treat to listen to. @Toph Iām glad you mentioned Shadowman, because that one was on my mind recently. It hit me as I was on a particular spot on a particular Venn diagram: an American pre-teen boy who wanted all that edge and who also only owned an N64, which was super light on all that new-to-me narrative/cinematic stuff that was going on over on my friendsā PlayStations. I obsessed over that game, mostly because the story was just so young adult horror specific ā just enough shallow historical allusions to make me, a 13-year-old who was good at school, feel smart. I also have this residual memory of an apartment building (or similar structure?) with either rusty or bloody walls, being in there with a serial killer who was out and about. Iād played Silent Hill and Resident Evil/2 by then, but that one, being by myself in my space with my 13" Orion CRT really stuck with me.
I was curious enough about it that I downloaded Nightdiveās Shadowman remaster just the other day on sale. Itās still pretty interesting ā I just think Acclaimās whole deal with diving into these obscure indie American comics was kind of neat in that era (was recently on a Turok kick for similar reasons), and while of course the story is a lot more teenage-level than my pre-teenage-level self perceived in 1999, it definitely has some things going for it that many other things at the time didnāt (such as not-bad voice acting). Iāll never have the time or attention span in my life again to get through the ridiculously labyrinthine environments, but I tell ya, the game still has some vibes to it, I ended up taking a few screenshots myself (it also, of course, hit the Nintendo subscription service days after I paid for it, so itās available to check out for lots more people)
On ghosts, shout out to these nervous looking cuties from Kiki Kaikai/Pocky & Rocky, and also the dudes in Deadly Premonition that say ādonāt want to dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeā
Arenāt Darkest Dungeon and Fear and Hunger both turn based horror games?
I guess this loops back to the āAre the souls games horror games?ā I would say no for all of them except Bloodborne, to which I would say absolutely yes. Bloodborne is cosmic horror through and through.
As for the elephant in the roomā¦
Spooky is the best video game ghost. Sheās so cute and her house is terrible.
And the other thing that needs addressingā¦
the worst hand in gaming was the kurote in majoraās mask. That thing freaked me out as a kid
Regarding whoever (Frank?) mentioned how frightening it used to be to fall out of a polygonal 3D world, one of the scariest moments I had with a game as a kid was playing the demo for Jersey Devil on PS1 at my friendās house late at night when we fell through the floor and into an infinite black abyss where he kept looping death animations until we turned the playstation off. Not a particularly scary thing on its own, but in that moment I was young enough, the CRT was small enough, the house was dark and quiet enough, that it unnerved me HARD.
Deepest for sure is one of the creepiest and effectively unsettling places Iāve been in a game.
