Ep. 361 - Specdracular 2024, with merritt k

I’m sorry to hear about the falling out, but it sounds like things are moving in a positive direction so I hope you all can continue carrying that energy and mindset into some fun cool things down the road.

Onward and upward!

So I don’t know if this memory is real or not but I know I got my mom to rent Shadowman for N64 when I was a kid and I remember there being a part where you have to walk through waist deep water in a swamp and there’s this heartbeat sound effect that gets louder and hearing that sound always creeped me out. I haven’t played it since so I honestly am not sure if my brain is recalling it accurately, but it feels real enough that Im kinda creeped out just thinking about it.

Edit: So the Youtube algorithm decided I should be reminded that the ReDead from Ocarina of Time paralyzing you and being forced to watch them slowly shamble up to you gave me nightmares as a kid so I’m adding them in here as well.

It’s probably still Uninvited on NES.

As a long time listener of this show, first time commenter, I just want to say that I appreciate you all addressing this. Tim was often so disrespectful to you all on the show, and he didn’t realize it but you tended to bring out the best in him in my opinion. Honestly his loss more than yours. I respect his work and ideas but I’m really glad you all are making this move. I’ll be here to support and cheer you on!

Dude, for me it was the eel in the underwater level in the sunken ship. The piano was a good jump scare but that eel unnerved me so much as a 9 year old.

Then the bastards brought it back in Odyssey.

I remember vividly the first time I saw it when I read this. It bonked be so hard I only had 2 health in the dial and drowned. I was so shocked I didn’t even try to dash for the air bubbles close by.

3: What are the best ghosts in video games?

First ghost that came to mind was the cat ghost that follows you around in Animal Well

Also, Metal Gear Solid 3 when you see the ghosts of the people you’ve killed in the river

That I did not have to bring either of these up goes to show they are certified Scary and I am not a baby. :sunglasses:

I would have muscled through Outer Wilds if not for the extreme vertigo. As in my Bloodborne / Dark Souls anecdote, what’s less terrifying than the anglers in Dark Bramble is the fact that on entering it there is almost nothing in any direction except diffuse lights which are visibly really far away.

That was indeed a scary spooky start of the show. I’ve been listening to this show since the beginning and i think this happened before as they said in the beginning, so i know the show will go on and be fine. You have my total support, this is one of the most enjoyable hours of podcast listening of the week.

Now listening to the rest of the show, since if i didn’t write this immediatly i would forget.

Finished the episode, and it was, as usual, great.

Shocked to hear Darren Hupke’s name in the Merritt’s recommendation! I worked with that guy over a decade ago on some comics stuff!

Tim will be missed (I really enjoyed last weeks special) but it’s completely understandable under the circumstances. Hopefully he patches it up with you later just for the sake of it even if you guys don’t decide to consider podcasting together.

Just quietly, I always get a little tickled when I see someone I have awareness of outside of IC post here. Reaffirms my confidence that I’m following A Good Person™️

Sorry to hear about all the BS with Tim.

The scariest moment I have ever experienced in a video game is System Shock 2. The sound design in that game is excellent, and combined with the tension of resource deprivation it’s spooky. And it’s not just the zombies. The things I found most terrifying were the screeches of the psychic monkeys and the polite warning the protocol droids give before exploding in your face. Protocol droids were always a jump scare.

Just here to show support to the guys, thanks for communicating it and (even if this sounds cliche) I’m sure this is all for the better.

Also showing support with a real comment

The time I was most scared of a game was probably my first night in minecraft, got down to an underground mine filled with spiders (personal top scary thing), without an understanding of the game and then the procedural nature of it all really hit me in a way it never happened in other game.
There hasn’t been a human in this cave EVER, there is NO DESIGN, there is NO EXIT HOLE, YOU ARE HERE ON YOUR OWN.

I’ll never forget that feeling.

Good luck everyone, keep on insertcrediting

Want to know something really scary? I was scrolling through this thread and this DK Clip played as I reached the end even though I had already listened to it.

for some reason I always thought the Muppets Monster Adventure game on PS1 was the scariest shit when it’s just a silly little platforming game but Kermit looking full Boris Karloff like was so unsettling

sad to hear about tim’s departure, but happy to hear that the show will go on!

For the most scared I’ve been in a video game, it’d have to be that dang fish from Jax and Daxter 1, it gave me such a fear of video game water that I’m scared of going into deep water in any video game now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu2Daw7KtWQ

Yknow I came across insert credit because of Tim, but I stayed and really fell for the show because of the sincerity, positivity, and fun of the whole thing, including guests/hosts obviously. Thanks for the solid intro, not easy to say stuff but good that you did.

With that said,

My scariest game is Beyond the Forbidden Forest. The intro screen is pretty spooky by itself - silhouetted trees in blue and black emerging with the sound of thunder. The atmosphere of the forest is eerie, walking around with music until the monsters appear. But, if all that wasn’t enough, it was the music that played as the monsters killed you that terrified me and still freaks me out. It blares a gut-wrenching alarm.
