It also seems like maybe Tommy Tallarico shows up for part. His mom would be very proud.
This got me thinking: When do I not listen to music that was originally composed for a video game?
just to add to the knockoff consoles in the middle east we also had a kuwaiti MSX clone that was popular enough to have knockoffs in different middle east countries under different names:
Oh interesting! I wonder if thatās whatās being talked about here: Show me anything - #3869 by tombo
Sheās talking about an MSX, based on the description of a black MSX that was like āanother levelā, I assumed MSX2, but I feel like this bootleg might make more sense.
That Sylvan Tale suite is gorgeous. Thanks for deciding to half-recommend it after all lol
The discussion about tunnel vision in video game criticism reminded me of a fun recent article in The Guardian where they had the arts critics and sports critics swap assignments.
I also canāt turn off the critic when engaging with media, but especially with games.
On the topic of what could get you playing more games, and the things that make the opening hours rough, I have a phrase that rattles around in my noggin where I think to myself, āJust let me play the damn game.ā A lot of games have a very fast Time to āJust let me play the damn game.ā
Pikmin 4 is a recent example for me of record time āJust let me play the damn game.ā
Since I know thereāll be a lot of good videogame music in here already, hereās the OST for .hack//Sign, a 2000s anime thatās not very good, but has absolutely killer music.
I havenāt listened to the episode yet but since people are talking about listening to video game music outside of video games some of my main staples are
- The NieR Gestalt & Replicant Orchestral Arrangement Album - I got a lot of productivity out out of this one
- The Celeste OST is great for getting in the zone as well
- Lonely Rolling Star from Katamary Damacy - I just put this on to have a good time every now and then
- Iāll admit my plebian tastes and that those lo-fi zelda & chill videos on youtube have gotten a lot of views from me over the years. More so back when I used to work in an office and less so now that I mostly work from home, but still.
I almost never listen to video game music outside of video games. so i went digging into my youtube history and found this was the last thing i listened to lol
apart from that my guess would be the vib-ribbon soundtrack idk
Of all things, it looks like this was the last time I listened to video game music outside of a game. I use video game music a lot for my Dungeons and Dragons games.
Minecraft soundtrack is an all-timer
music is a huge factor for how much i enjoy a game, so i listen to game soundtracks quite a bit. looking over the ā10 best gamesā list i posted a year or so ago, i think the one thing all had in common were banger soundtracks. further, one of the only reason i ever want to play the xenoblade games one day is because i like the soundtracks so much.
i think toby fox is one of my top artists of all time on spotify going by minutes listened, iām a bit out of that phase now but will still jam this and a few others fairly regularly:
i listen to the chrono cross soundtrack quite a bit:
i doubt this counts but if it does:
and what else can be said about the nier soundtracks + countless others!
some good quotes in this episode
āwhen youāre lying in bed thinking about a missionā
āI fantasize about having a friend that knows the MSX library really wellā
I love to listen to SNK 90ās arrange soundtracks during gym time.
Surprisingly, most of them (sans KOF, no idea why) are available on streaming services.
First, gotta use this space to say thanks to @esper for the IC YouTube channel, in addition to all the other stuff you do. That IC 24/7 YouTube channel is my go to background vid.
Re: video game music. The only OST I ever remember listening to outside the game is any Gran Turismo game. As somewhat of a jazz snob, I shouldnāt enjoy the GT series Kenny G-type jazz/easy listening, but I do. Very chill.
Most recently Iāve been loving New Star GPās OST and can see myself listening to that on the reg.
I love learning about this kind of stuff - when I was helping research the first games in Iran, the MSX didnāt come up, but I wonder whether it should have.
I was wondering if @esper had intended for there to be a distinction between game music and a game song in the opening warmup question?
@thebryanjzx90 not really, no. just whatever video game related music was enjoyed outside of the context of the game itās from
@Slink thank you so much!! expect updates to the 24/7 channel soon, iāve let the pool of episodes sit stagnant for a little too long lol
The video game music I last listened to outside of a video game would probably be the Battle Garegga soundtrack, which I end up listening to a lot while Iām working. The music being so EDM of the era inspired, yet the bosses in the game having names based on metal/metalcore artists is the right amount of silly for me.
