Ep. 362 - Official Mario Bong, with Mathew Kumar

Definitely a treat when Esper gets to host. They have such a radio voice.

BTW, at his suggestion, I searched Mathew Kumar on Amazon, and his book does not come up initially, as it tries to add an extra T.

what the person in the video was probably referring to was the MSX2 " sakhr" the company also made an MSX2 in jet black but they also had an MSX AX660 in black pictured here so it could be either ألوان الوطن | لو عندك كمبيوتر صخر اوعى ترميه.. «سامح» يشتري الأجهزة القديمة بمئات الجنيهات

in many ways it was peoples first console in the region unless you lived in certain big cities you could buy the nintendo

yeah video game research/history in the region is extremely hard to properly research even more so if you dont speak the language, lots of half-truths and misrememberings due to not writing it down.

more to your point about bootleggers creating a regions taste during the PS1 and PS2 era everyone would buy bootleg CDs it was almost more normal than buying retail ones. I actually still buy my video game CDs from the guy who sold me my PS1 burned CDS anyway he would sell them at around 2.75USD at the time. and he would fold out this catalogue of burned CDs and dynasty warriors was always the first game you see in the catalogue. and the only other big poster in the shop that wasnt mario.

you had to understand that even in the PS1/2 era we didnt really know when games came out, we never checked reviews we just picked whatever the guy said was good and tried it back home and thats why Dynasty warriors 4 became one of the best selling games in the region and also because it was an action game that didnt require much reading since most games weren’t ( and still arent) localized in arabic. after that it became a staple franchise in the gulf region with people nicknaming the franchise " swords" so dynasty warriors 5 would be called swords 5 when it came out. There was also an anime at the time running about the warring kingdoms which WAS localized so people could actually follow the story and cemented it as an iconic franchise in the late millenial early gen Zers. only last week there was a CONCERT for its anime’s opening song. Thats how big and culturally impactful it was and still is, hell my cousin is buying a PS5 pro so he could play the new dynasty warriors reboot game coming out in january. but if you bring up the franchise anywhere outside of the region its seen as a " cheap " game and a money grab.

UFO 50 has a splash screen that says Play Forever. Balatro’s developer appears to wear thousands of years of cumulative playtime as a badge of honor… These are my two favorite indie games of the year, but I like them despite the fact that they reward and value being huge time sinks. I worry that the ability to keep a player latched in for long amounts of time will be the parts that inspire others instead of all of the actually creative and brilliant parts.

Trying to suck up as much of my time as possible is an antagonistic feature. I hope future versions of us will be able to say thank goodness games aren’t usually made like that anymore.

I don’t listen to much game music but like once a week I have to listen to both of these to get them unstuck from my head

Does SilvaGunner count as video game music? They’re high-quality rips, after all.

If not then the last video game music I listened to was the soundtrack to Furi. It’s amazing. Furi Original Soundtrack | Carpenter Brut, Danger, The Toxic Avenger, Lorn, Scattle, Waveshaper, Kn1ght | Furi

I have that Furi soundtrack on Vinyl! Pretty great stuff

Mathew’s pitch for changing your shower head and buying his book got me really excited. The man should work in marketing.

This isn’t only true for games in my case but having a bigger social circle that shares the interest would probably help. The vast majority of my friends either has no interest in games at all or are the types of person that like one (type of) game and that’s it. There’s the FIFA guy, the civilization guy, the one-big-triple-A-game-every-couple-years guy, etc. But no one who really cares about the broader landscape or looking for weird stuff, which makes it hard to talk about interesting games that don’t fit neatly into these boxes.

I was lucky to meet a friend on FF XIV who has a broader interest in games and also joining these forums very much helped because I now have people to talk about this stuff with. I for example never would’ve played as far through Octopath Traveler II as I did, had not my friend started the game at the same time. We could write back and forth about the small things we liked or were struggling with and it felt more like a shared nice experience and less like homework.

And yeah, it definitely would help if more games got to the point more quickly and made hopping in and out of them easier. I think 1000xResist did a good job of presenting a coherent narrative that breaks neatly into chapters of 1h to 1,5h which I found really approachable as a busy person.

Make  shorter  games  everybody.

Yeah, a friend who is also into games at large is a big deal for sure! I started writing about games because I didn’t have that growing up and wanted it without realizing it. As soon as I met one other person like that (insert credit cofounder vincent diamante) a website was born.

Writing about the games I play is something the IC community is definitely motivating me to do! I feel it also enriches my experience of the game and let’s me learn more about my taste. I have yet to really get in the habit but I like it!

Really glad you two meeting led to the website and the website led to this community.

IC power-user to blogger pipeline is very real

Or it might just be that people who keep a blog are more likely to use a forum? Either way I think the cross-pollination is cool

If you hadn’t listened, now you can see!

Rarely I listen again, but that was worth a repeat listening. Viewing.

Even more greatness!!!

The “games we’ve been playing” thread might as well be a blogging platform (with a lot of good criticism, I might add!).

The last VG tune I listened to outside a game was the Kirby invincible theme from Star Allies on repeat for 15 minutes because my 8 year old is insane and it was the only way to get him to bathe.

But my personal go-to for regular game listening is either Gate of Thunder, Shadow of the Ninja, or Actraiser.
