Emmy-nominated writer and comedian Mike Drucker joins Brandon and Esper in answering Alex Jaffe’s questions on the Nintendo S2iitch, the ultimate fan experience, and the impossibility of defending your Persona 5 romance choice. Hosted by Alex Jaffe, with Brandon Sheffield, Esper Quinn, and Mike Drucker. Edited by Esper Quinn, original music by Kurt Feldman.
Brandon’s talk of how to pronounce Balatro and being at odds with what LocalThunk says reminds me of the GIF issue… (It’s a hard G for Graphical.) Also credit to @Jaffe again for the “it’s pronounced” joke during the question hole segment.
Thank you to @esper for informing me of the “No Monsters” mode in Crow Country. I’ve started it recently, and while I can handle the monsters for now, it’s good to know I can remove them as I am enjoying the story but feel like the fights are going to hinder things for me at times.
For any Patreon members not wanting to add to the question hole, fearing a backlog, I am here to squash your fears as my question was submitted only a week or two ago. I was shocked to hear it asked so soon! Thank you to the panel for the sincere answers.
As someone who grew up consuming a LOT of TV in the 90s, it’s actually very interesting that I can’t remember any actual video game commercials besides the taglines for the companies (such as EA Sports and Playstation). Perhaps just age has taken those out of my brain and replaced it with adult things, such as work, anxiety, and being a dad.
For award shows in general I’m of the belief that they need for of the Muppets. When they’re allowed to do their thing, it’s always entertaining with little to no cringe. Much better than most skits in award shows.
Lastly, Mike and Esper were great! I will say I missed Ash and what I’m sure are flaming hot takes involving the Switch 2, (or is it S2itch? Swiitch? Switch Advance?) so I hope we can hear them when she’s back!
This episode sent me on a little journey of knowledge.
So, Esper mentioned in passing that David Lynch did a PS2 commercial, and I thought to myself, “in fact, he did several!”. But… did he? Suddenly when I’m actually fact checking myself before posting to an internet forum, it’s not really clear how many he did. Some say 1, some say as many as 7.
There is a lot of reporting out there that refer to his ad, “Welcome to The Third Place”, as the ad he made for the PS2. Lynchnet has downloadable copies of his ads, but only one PS2 ad, and it’s “The Third Place”. However, youtube will tell you he directed as many as seven PS2 ads. But when I tried to look for the non-“Welcome to The Third Place” ads, I got mostly youtube reuploads. Suspicious.
Finally, I stumbled on this Medium article that goes through who actually directed some of those ads. Six PS2 advertisements have been misattributed to David Lynch. Ain’t it a funny old world?
My speculation is that The Third Place was the name of the advertising campaign, and Lynch’s ad was “Welcome to The Third Place”, and eventually these wires got crossed so now Lynch was thought responsible for the whole campaign. When (you might say unfortunately for them) it was an array of surrealist filmmakers who worked on the campaign.
Using its mention at the end of the episode to express my enjoyment for DC Action News here. Love this kind of meta-fiction and it’s a great way to keep up with what’s happening in DC Comics! Love the cut to grimdark Alex Jaffe for Absolute comic updates too.
That new Peach outfit in the thumbnail is @esper is this an eligible gender of this day?
Also, it’s very funny to me - and again this says a lot about Insert Credit - that after almost 25 years, Brandon still isn’t over Sega’s fall from grace.
What’s the opera full of flying skeletons and ghosts got to do with Golden Sun? Nothing at all. That chandelier dragon however became a optional summon in the third game.
I had already purchased the game by time they started running this ad, so I was so confused as to why Mewt was probably the only appropriately aged casting in the whole commercial and why would they spoil his character arc. (I still like the cm btw)
