Exploring the Sega Saturn library in 2020

Cute demo.

>

A tech demo of the original Unreal (1998) running on the Sega Saturn (1994)!

>
>

By myself (XL2) and Corvusdeux!

> Sound driver by Ponut64!

>
>

None of the original game‘s source code was used, I pretty much simply reused my Hellslave engine and adapted it for a couple of new features.

> A huge focus was put on 3D audio, which was only possible thanks to Ponut64’s sound driver.

> Just to be clear : I will not be porting the whole game for obvious legal reasons. So it won't go beyond what was in the demos released back in 1998.

catching up here but yes saturn games have arguably been horribly unafordable since at least 2013/2014? at least that's when i noticed stuff usually less cared about like mega man 8 or even saturn bomberman spiking up to $100+ - good games, but titles like panzer saga and hyper dual were the baller $200 games at that point so that jump was noticeable

all that to say: if no one else has said it, the satiator is hands-down your best investment these days, like the way action replays used to be a necessity

it's plug & play and so easy to load up - i wish the PSX & dreamcast options had been that simple

I bought a bunch of Sega Saturn games while I was in Japan (ignore the lone dreamcast game) and they were all 5-10$.

Not sure when I‘ll have time to check them out, but I’m really excited for Zero4 Champ Doozy J.

@“mtvcribs”#p121379 I hope your Japanese is good for all these! What made you choose these particular titles btw?

@“exodus”#p121390 lol it sure isn‘t.

I just had never heard of any of them before, they looked cool, and they were cheap.

I don’t expect to be able to get very far in any of them, but I look forward to trying.

@“mtvcribs”#p121400 cool, well hopefully you get something out of them! I don't wanna be a downer but to measure your expectations these are all pretty tough to play budget titles that are super Japanese-reliant. Lulu you might be able to get through though!

I'll second this, my Japanese reading comprehension is just barely at an early grade school level and I found Doozy-J Type R to be tough to work through, but the aesthetic sure is great!

That's what I was going to add about budget Saturn games-- there are quite a few games that can be had pretty cheaply, but they're often not the easiest to manage if your Japanese reading comprehension is low, BUT BUT most Saturn games have a particularly good and unique aesthetic that I think is pretty important to experience for ICers. That's my take at least! Still, it's hard to recommend collecting for Saturn in general these days, or honestly for any system that's more than a few years old, since the collector market has caused a bunch of the coolest games to skyrocket in price.

This may be totally unremarkable, but I‘m putting it here for any saturn newbs who would wanna pick up this tremendous game.

sealed christmas nights into dreams is somehow still reasonably priced:

I would get it, but:

  • 1. I don’t collect discs really, anymore
  • 2. jewel cases are also a liability
  • 3. I could not bring myself to unwrap a sealed game in the year 2023.
  • they've also got some other interesting stuff for reasonable prices. El Dorado's gate sealed, Heavy Nova for Mega CD sealed... a few other sealed saturn, dreamcast, 3DO and MCD games. cool!

    @“treefroggy”#p128017 this is cool

i still have an OG one from EB games (i wanna say?) but was admittedly jealous when i saw a friend's copy had a "happy holidays from sega" sticker

    the fuck, man
why didn't they wish _me_ a happy holiday

    wow pricing

I know this is a Saturn thread but why in the heck is Mario Kart Wii $65?!

it‘s not even a real case!! it’s photocopied!

@“onefiftythree”#p132722 preposterous! That game is not great. Looking at Pricecharting it seems to be going for $28 complete.

@“IrishNinja”#p128070 I think the “happy holidays” sticker was when you got it for buying a Saturn at Christmas.

here's the bag from the saturn launch (i think from laox akihabara, but don't quote me on that.)

    @“onefiftythree”#p132707 Corpse Killer isn't worth $50 either.

    Yoooooooooo! This TGS rocks!

@“◉◉maru”#p132974 I hope they put in dual analog control! That'd be the first thing I would mention if I were making an assault suit leynoss remake trailer

@“exodus”#p133308 “Saturn Tribute” so it’s just the ol’ Zebra Engine wrapper/emulator running the Saturn version as usual. Someone else could probably still add/hack double stick controls but I would not hold my breath considering the people in charge.
