@“chazumaru”#p92239 elan doree is one of those weird games whose value was outsized by weird nerd speculation in the early 2000s, and it had this “holy grail” status despite there being a fair number of them out there. At one point people talked about it in similar ways to taromaru. So I bought a copy for $30 (in the US) that had no back cover in 2002 or whatever, realized it wasn‘t that cool and I needed grocery money, so sold it for $150 a few months later. Then I went to japan and bought a complete copy with obi for $30, realizing the “hyper rarity” thing was just a fabrication. Of course now it is indeed worth money, but it’s fighting game on the saturn with a lower-than-capcom print run, so that's just how it is now. Anyway, I was never into game speculating, but I did well on that one.
@“Karasu”#p92273 “unique and maybe not fantastic late 90’s 3D fighter” is a pretty accurate description! But it is a fun game with a few cool ideas. Developped by Sai-Mate who had earlier developed the pretty on top of the trend experimental 3D pet simulation Pup Breeder, which could be considered the fifth Beatles of the Pokémon / Digimon / Tamagotchi / Monster Farm band.
@"exodus"#p92282 I was not aware if the speculation trend was similar or different in North America but, in France as well, Elan Dorée had a weird reputation of being rare, mysterious and expensive (by early 2000s pricings) whereas you could get the Saturn version and the ST-V version for a reasonable price in Akihabara or Namba. I guess the 1999 release and some early telephone on the early Internet webrings exaggerated its rarity back then.~~<_what’s the non-racist English expression for "chinese whispers" or that native american variant I learned in Seinfeld?_>~~
Even today the game is rather reasonable (about ¥16000 to ¥20000 on the Saturn, ¥20000 to ¥25000 on ST-V) by modern Saturn pricings compared to its circulation.
@“chazumaru”#p92302 the word for the game you are looking for is “telephone.”
I never heard of "Chinese Whispers" until I was in Australia and it make my eyes pop out of my head like a cartoon wolf.
@“exodus”#p92282 I know exactly what you mean. Perhaps it's because this game looked really cool in screenshots and the positive association with dragoons we all had? The game was briefly the same price as Radiant Silvergun (or more???!)
@“Neko”#p92319 Thanks! The (hopefully quaint?) usual French expression for it is “telephone arabe” which is exactly what it sounds like so that’s one case where we can’t really point any fingers…
@“chazumaru”#p92332 people need to chill out with these racial appellations to terms like this. But you can‘t have an empire if you can’t put people down!
@"Neko"#p92320 yeah, it really did look good in screenshots - I think it's one of those games people convinced themselves they likes because they had paid the price for it. I actually like it more today than I did back then, but it's still not great to actually play.
It may also have been that it was such a late release for Saturn that it took on a bit of mythos. The console was long dead here (a year out from Panzer Dragoon Saga) and the Dreamcast was yet to hit Hollywood Video that we were just holding on to scraps.

ps this game came out so late that it's on the 3-4 pages in *Dreamcast* Magazine dedicated to Saturn releases, as Sega Saturn Magazine had ended about 10 months earlier.
Happy 28th Anniversary, SegaSaturn! Not sure a Vtuber playing a homebrew cat game is the kind of gift from Modern Society you deserve on your birthday, but here we are.

@“chazumaru”#p93958 this is actually quite reminiscent of ninpen manmaru, in good and bad ways!
Here we go, the great Elevator Action Returns is now available on Switch, PS4, Xbox and Steam.

Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai Saturn Tribute is out in Japan and you may have wondered how they would deal with all those titties. City Connection’s answer: laser beams.

Which is also a nice opportunity to share this recent retrospective of all *bishōjo mahjong software* released on the console.

Those are some serious beams!! Thankfully Suchie pai is a good mahjong game regardless of beams, and maybe even makes it a bit funnier and more approachable
@“exodus”#p96847 Best one of the lot (and which can be bought separately on the eShop) is probably the slow paced variety adventure game Doki Doki Nightmare which does not feature that much naughty stuff to begin with.

@“chazumaru”#p96851 and what a throbbing nightmare it is! That's actually the only one I have complete
Been playing so much From Software darkness lately, so Today I played Christmas NiGHTS Into Dreams for the first time ever! Really got me in the mood to then go over to my dads van and watch Will Ferrel’s new film Spirited which was also really good. Even my dad, who is will ferrel’s ELF in the flesh (he has been dressing as an elf every day all week including at work) and also a gen X with a very complicated relationship with video games and the 90’s in general, admitted nights into dreams is the most Christmas video game.
Xmas Nights was surrrrr good, I was brought to tears. The 90’s baby nostalgia was hitting, I had a hello kitty/Sanrio/keroppi Christmas cartoon on tape I used to watch all year round that this reminded me of. The credits song was so so good, sounded amazing on some nice speakers.
I only played one stage per character, is there more that I unlocked? I intend to play about two stages per day up to Christmas. Even if it’s the same two stages.

You unlock stuff by beating the game with either character, and then playing a present matching game - and you should do it, too, so you can unlock playing as sonic!
@“exodus”#p97979 ah yeah, I unlocked karaoke mode and the virtual museum. Is that how you unlock stages too? Guess I’ll find out!
@“treefroggy”#p97983 There are no other stages so to speak (this was a free demo version after all) but still a few cool surprises for you to unlock, including one that makes you play the same stage completely differently.
@“chazumaru”#p97990 I always think that having to play those same stages over and over again is what finally broke open how you are supposed to play Nights for me.
