the guys sure didn’t like the souls games back in the day. I asked a listener question ages ago as to why and they really couldn’t put their finger on it. I just didn’t click with them. Tim at least came around years later.
The first three levels of Battletoads are great just stop if you beat the turbo tunnel
Banjo Kazooie’s fine. I enjoyed it when I was a little baby child, but never enough to play the sequel. I went back when it got added to the NSO service a couple years ago and played through a good chunk of it - the characters, sound design and overall tone ARE grating at times, but I still had a good time with it.
The stage designs are creative and fun to explore, and there’s a good variety of movement and gameplay mechanics.
I probably wouldn’t be as positive toward it if it hadn’t gotten elbow deep into my plastic baby brain. I know Tim’s disdain mostly comes from him coming to it late, one hundred percenting it in college, and having that “what am I doing with my life” moment.
Please don’t ban me!!
I can see the the reasons to not like FFT (those two atrocious battles), maybe you don’t like the story, but how is the story any less corny than any of the other games in the series. I’d argue it strikes more or less the same tone as FF6. Anyway on my end the complaints most folks have about the game (not speaking for anybody) but particularly the trivial difficulty at the end is kinda like, isn’t that most mainstream RPGs? I dunno.
I think it’s easy to hate on FFT likers because a lot of people say it’s their favorite tactics game (or the best tactics game) when, in fact, it is the one they played.
I’ve written on this forum at length about how cool I think FFT is, but I think I see where they panel is coming from.
I like levels 5 and 6 too (surfing and sneks) but anything beyond the 75% point of level 6 is not worth playing.
And level 4 (ice) is not a good level.
in defense of the show, so far hd2d has, imo, been used in kinda yucky ways, like how in octopath it’s all BROWN and BLURRED with PARTICLE EFFECTS and VERY BIG AMBIENTED OCCLUSIONS, and i’ve always found it insipid at best but usually just ugly to my eyes. that dragon quest 3 remake though, hoo boy that one has a good look to it! it’s positively verdant!
I do see that argument, and mostly agree, except that PS1 era Square production values are pretty untouchable.
I love tactics ogre and it probably is a better game, Disgaea FE etc all great, but I would compare FFT to a great breezy blockbuster movie to watch. I do get some ppl look to SRPGs for more friction though.
My hot Battletoads take is that the game is pretty OK, and you should try the Genesis port. It’s not quite a brutal and they fixed a lot of bugs. It’s one of the first console games ArcSysWorks ever developed (on contract).
Also, Ecco the Dolphin 1&2 are both too hard, but there are few other games that have those kind of vibes. Sometimes I fire one of them up and just enter a code for a level I’ve never played and just Be A Dolphin for a while.
If “they” take you out, I’m going down with you!
Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You!
When I was a teenager, my friends and I ran a huge KH RP forum site AKA when you have NO CHOICE but to follow and comprehend that mess of a lore, the games are actually pretty fun and fulfilling.
TWEWY hit me at just the right angsty age to be important to me both in an aesthetic and literary manner and even as an adult, I was able to enjoy the sequel.
lol that rules. Any fun forum RP memories?
I spent a lot of time on a final fantasy RP board when I was a teen. There were like fights and a narrative that happened but I didn’t really care about any of that, I just ran a pretend tavern and chatted with people in-character.
Also I could have sworn at least one panelist liked TWEWY. Maybe Brandon?
we should do that on the ic forums
Civilian-type RP is really the most fun shit in cases like that. I played a Hylian Innkeeper in some Legend of Zelda RP, and it’s great to just make people decompress from the sword and sorcery of it all.
Kingdom Hearts RP was very funny back then because everyone wanted to be an edgy Hot Topic (hilariously where I was working at the time) DeviantArt style OC with a Keyblade and we had a reputation of being the “serious”/“literary” KHRP site. There was a point where every new character was from The Nightmare Before Christmas world just so they could be a Vampire, Angel, Demon, etc.
The Keyblade stuff was especially a nightmare because in-lore (at least at the time, pre mobile game) they were somewhat rare and I was the mod who determined whether characters could be Keyblade eligible. RPers needed to make significant contributions to the greater site story and show that they could write characters with enough willpower/heart to convincingly wield one. Then I would do some investigative research into all their IC posts and design a trial that would emotionally wreck the character and test their resolve. That part was really fun when people were game to put in the work and build a collaborative story.
Also, I only remember that they made fun of both the Japanese and English names of TWEWY but that’s cool if there was love for it on the pod :)
Super Smash Bros. , i think only Jaffe is ok with it
Damn i love this franchise so much
I like BaoShock, the story was a but much still, but the gameplay was a lot of fun. I had a great time playing through it.
I like Rocket League a lot which i recall Tim saying something about it being not great.
I remember hearing how the megaman games arent that good or something along those lines. Megaman is great!
I agree with your post but more importantly you have me craving Bao Buns now.
I’m not sure if I liked Bioshock or not, but as an avid DS9 fan, I loved hearing Armin Shimerman. Great casting!
Oh, and throw me down as another shameless Smash Bros. enjoyer. Every one of those games is delicious, even Brawl.
Oh, and i love Smash. All of them, even brawl are great games. Smash 4 is probably my favorite though.
Super Smash Brothers Melee is one of the most beautiful competitive games. It is a thing of beauty.
