Fictional Travel Recommendations

Is your regular 9-5 bringing you down? Is it feeling more like a 24/7? It’s time to pack your bags and travel to beautiful VVardenfell, the jewel of Morrowind!

Walk the majestic hills lined with fungal flora, and explore carbon rich mountains thronged with winged creatures to bird watch. The stone clad, windowless cantons of Vivec are a shoppers dream! With a hyper regional transportation system that lets you enjoy the quiet moments in between, Vvardenfell is ready to be explored! If you’re a dark elf.

I really like maps so share your favorite fictional maps! Brownie points if you write a humorous travel guide esque blurb. The map for The Elder Scrolls Morrowind is pretty cool, due to the alien landscapes, and surprises located all over. Daedric Ruins, weird insect mines, bandits, mages, and giant cities are all over. The convoluted travel system is fun to use, but does tend to push you towards walking from place to place which is the way to do it anyways. I used Balmora as my home base, since it is well connected, and lived in the top floor of some guys house and decorated it with all my shiny items.
Also I’ve never made a topic before, so ta dah!

another classic one to get the ball rolling ( I WANT IT TO ROLL)

WELCOME TO DINOSAUR LAND
FROM THE HILLS OF DONUT PLAINS, TO THE CAVERNS OF THE VANILLA DOME, DINOSAUR LAND BECKONS THE CURIOUS TRAVELER. WHAT SECRETS LIE BEHIND WHAT YOU SEE?

but really the map to SMW is so cool. The secret connections between levels, and tying them into the map makes it extremely fun to see the map grow. Having the map naturally set you up for the “speedrun” before that was ever really a thing is also incredible foresight from Nintendo.

Every “world” has a special character that is mostly reflected in the map. Of course the underground levels happen in the underground VANILLA DOME. It’s a Forest of Illusion so there need to be multiple levels. Forests are big! Locking map progress behind the big buttons also leads to doubling back, and trying out new ways to finish levels further doubling down on map expansion. MAPS ARE COOL

Once again sharing the only video game map I care about, the deadly premonition greenvale map with streets made to look like a dog.

To know a good map you must know a bad map. I love PuLiRuLa but the map that shows up inbetween levels is god awful. Low Detail, low Interest. There is just a big forest in between all the levels? But there is no Forest Level??? Arcades were filled with great maps, but this not one of them. Even the faded painterly parchment aspect of it is poorly pulled off. I do like the clouds so it has that.

Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom is going for a similar style and pulls it off much better. It conveys that this is a real world and fits in well with the overall style of the game.

and finally one I like selfishly despite not actually being that good as a map. It does have tons of style! It’s Gimmick!
