Final Fantasy Thread

@“Updog”#p81460 don’t have time to scroll/search for it, but I wrote a lot about that game when I beat it in this thread.

___

Reminder to everyone that Dissidia Final Fantasy (first one, and 012) is awesome.

I gotta get through 6.0 man

@“sabertoothalex”#p81507 ooo yeah I forgot FF14 is my go-to for when I’m between games not feeling anything in particular!

Thsnks for the replies ill check u guys’ earlier posts

Having some real WOL fatigue right now. I’ve been playing a male Au Ra since I started and have always had kind of a hard time finding a look I liked for him. I feel like it sometimes impacts how much I get invested in scenes sometimes because I don’t love what I’m looking at. I gotta try something new.

For the other XIV players here: what’s your current WOL? And if you have a history of changing even better, would love to hear the whys and history.

@“Updog”#p81460 Wondering what people think about ffx here.

Finished it inside a week when it originally came out. Hated it so much I sold it and used the money to pick up Devil May Cry which I liked a whole lot (at the time).

If I were to cast my mind back to teenage me, it was definitely the voice acting turning me off at the top of the list. I thought the colours were garrish, I didn't appreciate a strictly turn-based battle system, and I thought the music was mostly dull and forgettable (with [one very important exception](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk88cJ9KRjE)).

I'm gonna give it another chance, probably play the undub like I've been doing with XIII.

@“Updog”#p81460 Wondering what people think about ffx here.

I played it last year for the first time and I loved it. The battle system remains engaging throughout the totality of the main quest, but most importantly I think the game's pacing is top notch. The world and sense of place are outstanding, too, and remain great in the (truly fun and probably better) sequel.

Replaying Dissidia, I‘m recalling that I had played every story mode chapter back in the day except for Tidus, because I didn’t like FFX. That was when the game came out, so like 2008 or something. Now that I‘ve had my whole experience with enjoying the game, I’m playin Tidus' chapter for the first time and enjoying it.

@“treefroggy”#p81627 By some coincidence we ended up starting Dissidia at almost the same time (though I‘m playing Duodecim). I’m playing on Vita and can make the right stick double as another d-pad/set of camera controls, which is cool, although doesn't really seem necessary (nor is there really time to take my thumb away from the face buttons). In looking up some of the differences between the first one and 012 I found out the first one has a cooler opening movie (not to mention box art)

How does the story mode in Dissidia 1 work? In 012 you're just playing as Lightning right away, but maybe that's all prologue, I'm not far enough in yet

@“captain”#p81633 you can move your save from the first game to 012 and it‘s claimed that 012 has all the missions or whatever from the first game, but I don’t care. I'm gonna play the first one then move on to 012.

Story mode starts with two tutorial sequences where you play as the Warrior of Light.

I like how often someone else on this forum begins playing an old game right as I do

@“treefroggy”#p81635 Nice. The tutorial sequence/prologue (if it is that) in 012 is pretty long, but not in a bad way. I was surprised at how easy a the initial gauntlet of “normal” fights was and let my guard down, ensuring I got absolutely clotheslined by the first “boss” fight. Did you play any Dissidia NT?

@"sabertoothalex"#p81573 I spent like three hours in character creation at the beginning, agonizing over every choice (how do you come up with a culture/lore-consistent name for a game you've never played?! I don't know but I tried!)

Committing to one look was easier once I found out you get a fantasia at the end of ARR (did I hear correctly?) but as I've played I think I've decided I like the character I settled on, a lady elf. Elezen? My other option was a male elezen, but I don't know if I'd have liked that. I'd have had to spend another hour coming up with a different first name, at any rate...

@“captain”#p81637 I spent like three hours in character creation at the beginning, agonizing over every choice (how do you come up with a culture/lore-consistent name for a game you’ve never played?! I don’t know but I tried!)

I named mine after my cats Pearl and Kung Fu

In retrospect I wish I'd abstracted Pearl's name too to like, Parle or something but w/e

Damn maybe a viera would be cool rn considering my recent Ivalice leanings

@“captain”#p81637 I played a fair bit of 012 when it came out, but I was vehemently opposed to FF13 at the time and also wasn‘t yet into 12 and wished Vaan was Ramza instead. So I didn’t have much to take from it aside for the inclusion of tifa and kain, and kind of fell off.

Haven‘t had the chance to try NT but I also am sure that I’ll be in the group of people that find it pretty disappointing, a lot of the periphery stuff in dissidia like the items and stats and story are what keeps me engaged and I think that it adds up to a much better game. I like all the character study and fan servicey stuff a fair bit, haha. it‘s very rewarding when you’ve played every single game to see FIRION kickin it with Cecil, Tidus, Cloud etc.

fun facts: when I played in high school, I hacked my entire friends group of psp-owners so we could all play together, and we each chose different characters to main!
I was a hardcore onion knight main. This probably added to the fact FFIII was my favorite at the time. My other homie was a cecil main, another was a tidus main, and another mained kefka. It really suited their personalities and was among the best organic competitive multiplayer experiences of my life. Way better than any time playing Smash Bros.
Dissidia beat smash bros to the punch of a portable game. Again this is Nintendo doing "too little, too late" by the time smash bros. for 3DS came out was the time I had stopped wishing for a portable smash bros.... they should have done it sooner... Or better....

@“Syzygy”#p81643 I don‘t think I found that forum post but I did find a name generator with similar explanations of the naming conventions. I’m playing as a female (Wildwood) elezen but wanted a slightly more androgynous name, so came up with one that sounded feminine but didn‘t use any of the feminine suffixes. The detail about Duskwight and Wildwood groups staking a claim in one surname or another made me anxious I’d pick one that was already taken, and it would be the wrong one!

But that worrying is all in the past, I'm happy with what I came up with

@“Updog”#p81460 It‘s a cool game, looks cool, has a lot of cool stuff in it, but also I just find it super boring. I think cause it’s on rails and the pacing just seems off. The story doesn't hit me like the other games. For reference my favorite is IX with the VI and the rest of the PS1 games right behind.

@“DavidNoo”#p82011

A man after my own heart!

FFIX will always be my favorite.

Which is why that first image hurts my soul.

@“Updog”#p81460 i love FFX. i replayed VII, VIII, IX, X and XII a couple years back. love the music and the writing. i felt empty for like 48 hours after it was over…

I’m back in XIV after a post-Heavensward break. Early Stormblood is real good. I changed my WoL from Au Ra to Elezen. Feeling good.
