two things:
taking a long break from elden ring, and coming back, feels great. the main game changer is this:
if you play any amount of dark souls or other games in the series before returning to elden ring, it’s easy to forget you have a horse. this changes the game a ton. I really like how a lot of these areas feel when you’re not frantically speeding around on a horse looting everything.

second, in my opinion, the modern from software Story Trailer feels like the equivalent to a Story segment in an old school instruction booklet. content unseen in the game that provides context.

Something that I keep at the forefront of my mind as a Sekiro-enjoyer (and **preferer **, at this point) is that Elden Ring began development prior to Sekiro, and in some ways feels like a step backwards.
That is why I am especially looking forward to the DLC, being a post-Sekiro design.
And of course, FS is so rad, it is now confirmed that the Shadow of the Erdtree will contain an option to put a Sekiro-style perfect block + counter system into the game via the flask of crystal tears.
This alone is so rad, it makes me immediately wonder if I would have enjoyed the game so much more if it was available from day one. I’m not gonna do another complete run of the game using this option, though I’m sure many people will. Either way, this DLC is confirmed to be stupendous, larger than any other FS DLC (which are already state of the art for how large and wondrous they are), to the point where it seems unfathomable just how grand it will be.

Well, I caved and gave into the Dark Souls itch again over the last few days. It was going pretty well—for awhile I felt like I was finally “getting” the experience. I’ve gotten through three bosses (including one I’d only found on this playthrough, which was neat!) and back to Capra Demon: the wall that originally soured me on the experience so many years ago on the PS3

I stumbled upon it today quite by accident and was immediately reminded of why I quit before (and every subsequent time I’ve tried to approach the game again since, though this is the first time I’ve actually gotten to this particular boss again). Knowing I wasn’t prepared enough for the fight yet, I spent awhile exploring and the like, but unfortunately could not find any new paths to explore, which means I’m going to have to deal with the fight sooner, rather than later

And that knowledge has more or less sapped the newly growing enthusiasm I had for Dark Souls. I’ll probably load the game up again in a day or two and see if I can’t stumble on something I missed, but I feel like I’ve been pretty thorough in my exploration, so I’m not sure there’s much I can do outside of grinding souls for several hours in the hopes that stats will help me push through, which doesn’t sound like the most engaging time to me

There’s a way you can cheese that boss that’s very simple if you’re interested/open to doing that kind of thing. I had to do it when I played the game and I’m glad I did because the rest was very much worth it.

seconding @sabertoothalex to cheese because the capra demon sucks but also have to begrudgingly admit it successfully makes me fear and dread the boss fight

I’ve played that first chunk of Dark Souls at least a dozen times, and the Capra demon might as well be a dice roll. Bad fight. You can try to funnel the dogs with the small staircase in the back, but that’s messy too.

The Capra is hard but I have had some success with a dexterity build as it meant I could keep moving. You can hit him or one of his dogs and then dodge roll far away, regroup and go again. You can kite up the stairs then drop off if you need some space as well. Hard boss fight.

Where to find an excellent early game Dex weapon:

Kill the merchant in Undead Burg. He drops the uchigatana which will see you through a lot of the early game if you put a load of points into dex

Alternatively, just do the cheese method. I’ve done that on a subsequent playthrough for the lulz.

Are we talking about throwing poop over the fog gate to poison him? Very hilarious way to win that fight.

You can also throw an alluring skull in order to distract the dogs (which is still something of a dice roll since they might hit you first), which could be a middle ground if the poop method doesn’t appeal.

Capra Demon? More like . . .

Capra Demon is a great boss…

I don’t have any tips not shared by my betters, but good luck! I think using the shield and stairs to funnel them helped me. One time one of them glitched and got stuck on something which let me focus down the other.

Man, I wish I knew about the poop trick sooner. I get by on going up the stairs, dropping off, repeat. A stair carousel, or stairousel if you will. To me this feels like the game reinforcing that circular motions are good and telling you “now try it in a matchbox!”

I don’t imagine I’ll hit a point where cheesing anything will give me what I’m after out of the game. I already feel a little guilty that the Taurus Demon jumped off the battlements for my first boss kill, and it happened quite by accident

My 10-year journey trying to “click” with Dark Souls and related -likes has involved a lot of engaging with essays and videos and essays-what-are-videos about them, so I know about a number of things like that. I’m largely approaching the game like I don’t know those things, though7I’m aiming as close to an “organic” experience as I can get

This most recent attempt has finally given me a hint of understanding for the (at times overly) effusive praise I’ve seen for FromSoftware’s post-Demons’s Souls work, which has me more inclined to keep pushing—for now, at least—but that “organic” experience is key to maintaining that inclination for me

the lore-explainer-content industrial complex certainly does overdo it yeah. Have you tried other FromSoft games? I ask because imo there are a few major high points, then the rest are good/neat but less essential, and the kind of praise they receive flattens them all on the same axis. Dark Souls isnt worth bashing your head against to try to “get”, for instance, and doing so isn’t necessarily the key to appreciating its peer games

Thus far I’ve tried Demons’s Souls, Dark Souls (which I’ve bought twice for some reason I don’t understand) and Bloodborne. I’ve avoided the others thus far because I still own Dark Souls, which has thus become a sort of white whale for me

I know plenty of folks hold Sekiro in particular high regard, but I probably won’t ever get around to that one since it lacks character creation and focuses on parries, which is my true gaming weakness. Elden Ring is on my radar, as it were, and once the DLC comes out and I can hopefully pick up the base game more cheaply, I may finally pick that one up
