Game Soundtrack Plagarism

I know Asuka, and this wasn't intentional.

@KennyL thank you for posting this! I totally lost this thread.

This threadā€™s so good.

ā€œTrialā€ from Ace Attorney has a cue that comes straight outta Thousand Knives.

@copySave

if you just speed up the melody it's not plagiarism

@KennyL If Chemical Plant was really inspired by a single bar of Prince's music, then kudos to all parties

i knew i recognized the B part of this Schumann songā€¦Suikoden ripped it off!!

https://youtu.be/0zA6bJsDfvM?t=55
https://youtu.be/RFQqXxe9dqk?t=54

i linked the vids to start at the relevant parts. the songs are in different keys but the melody is essentially the same. according to Wikipedia Miki Higashino is "one of only a small handful of game composers capable of scoring a full orchestra" so ya gotta believe she was aware of this tune and it was done on purpose

ā€œPlagiarismā€ is a strong word, but this track (ā€œOmoideā€ from Suigetsu: Mayoigokoro) I discovered as part of a DC music compilation starts out a heck of a lot like ā€œIn My Lifeā€ by The Beatles:

https://youtu.be/dG9tuuznL1Y

https://youtu.be/PYrAViGK-18

see also the flaming lipsā€™ version

this thread rules but makes me really question what is plagiarism, whatā€˜s homage, and whatā€™s all in between that which like NOT THAT THATā€˜S BEEN A DISCUSSION FOR DECADES, especially with the onset of hip-hop/sample-based music and differing cultural norms on what does or doesnā€™t fly as far as using motifs heard elsewhere. (obviously there's a huge difference between just note for note dropping a song into your game, and doing some pastiche-y reference like the ā€œenglandā€ background tune in nes super dodge ball). capitalism and intellectual property laws sure gummed up the works of the exchange of artistic ideas huh??

either way, love this stuff haha

@KennyL this guy is a GOLDMINE of this stuff, dig thru his archives like a year or so ago, there's like dozens of similar tiktoks like this (and a bunch going the other way, this one maybe being my fav)

This one is different enough itā€˜s definitely not plagiarism, but thereā€™s a certain similarity in there

Yu Suzukiā€˜s weird Apple Arcade game has the funniest soundtrack of all time. Itā€™s like all songs that sound like bits and pieces of Queen tracks. Incredibly goofy move.

Also kind of an odd instance of self-plagiarism. Toby Fox put a bit of one of his earlier songs into his work on Pokemon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSUdTV5x0X0
The bit in question is from a song off of "The Baby is You," Toby's rock opera album about homestuck mpreg.

choro q has a lot of this, very blatantly:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XI2AsS8GkA
(the person who noticed this last one uploaded the midi to youtube because they noticed the similarity, which is kinda neat)

i suppose with racing hero and ridge racer, you could argue it's an homage (as choro q games are also racing games), but the random midi makes me less certain that was the composer's intention...
(choro q still has lots of [great](https://youtu.be/4dmhtI_g774) original (to my knowledge) music, at least!)

Hereā€˜s a fun one cause itā€™s the inverse of most of the posts in this thread:

Pretty sure that [Mac Demarco](https://youtu.be/i1_QP8kMmj0?t=205) Lifted _Wind Scene_ by Yasunori Mitsuda from _Chrono Trigger

Kerokero Village from Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure seems to borrow a couple motives from Totoā€˜s Africa. Iā€™ve time-stamped the most noticeable example, but some more subtle ones are scattered all throughout.

am I making this up or is this real

Not exactly plagarism since Parodius music is mostly based on classical music but hereā€˜s one based on Thatā€™s The Way (I Like It) by KC & The Sunshine Band.
