GameCube

Is it just me or do GameCube games look crisper with higher contrast than Wii games? I mean I know it‘s not just me that they’re crispier—the Wii is known to have a blurring filter over all of its games, but the colour always seemed a bit muddier on Wii than GCN. It might be I‘m imagining it. Either way I’m bumping this thread because I've been playing Pikmin 1 this weekend and loving it lol lmao.

As far as I am concerned the Gamecube is basically for P.N.03. The Y2K styled arcadey, rhythm, third person shoot-em-up that feels like a sega game but is actually a Capcom game featuring a constantly dancing woman who shoots lasers out of her fingers.

One of a handful of female lead third person shooters that came out around the same time that critics deeply hated just because it was kind of weird. (Gun Valkyrie, Bullet Witch, etc.)

@“connrrr”#p126435 i see this, but i suspect it's a style thing? the wii being in the xbox 360 era, where the whole palette of games across the spectrum seemed to shift away from color and towards “mature” grey and brown tones, seems like a big part of it

@“Andy B”#p126518 Wow. Best elevator pitch for P.N.03 I've ever seen. Makin me feel like an idiot over here for never having played it, despite being a huge GameCube fan.

A few weeks ago I got a nice japanese copy of the first pokemon pinball game, replaced the battery and started at it. I‘ve been playing this game since it came out when I was a kid, but evolving pokemon is still so hard! I love the music, portable rumble feature and everything about it though. The fact some of the tracks were gen 2 tracks before gen 2 released still blows my mind all these years later, and I didn’t even notice it as a kid, but I did notice the remixed gen 1 songs and that it has some of the best music on GB, periodtdt……

Anyways, I guess gen 1 pokemon pinball is considered unfair at times, and the only other pokemon pinball (that I'm aware of), gen 3 pokemon pinball, is considered to be a better, fairer game. I'd picked it up in the past, but not for very long, since I prefer the gen 1 game....

Until now... I've been playing it, and it's really good. so damn good.

a japanese ebay seller botched my order of one gamecube memory card pretty badly, was unresponsive and put the wrong address on the package. so they sent me like four or five of the same black gamecube memory cards to make up for it. at the very least, I get to have the always-interesting experience of seeing the previous owners' data.

I had decent luck-- some of the saves on these are for japanese games I own hard copies of.
there are some Dairantou Smash Brothers DX *photograph saves* on here, from the photo mode. that's cool!

there's also one with a town save of Doubutsu no mori+ and another memory card with a town save for Doubutsu no mori e+. both were very boring-- seems like they just raced to get the largest house and barely filled it with anything interesting, and the towns' landscape is entirely untouched. very odd. Though one neat thing is someone placed a pitfall directly east of the player's door, almost as a booby trap to any second hand user. One house had a couple famicom games in it-- balloon fight and punch out, which are some of the better games available... so at least it's somewhat curated.... one of the players had a custom menu background, the trashy shirt form the Halloween event. But there doesn't seem to be any letters from humans, custom patterns, they only caught 4 fish / bugs apiece, and the town tune is still default... I'll check the post office, if I ever get around to it... also worth checking the island for signs of visitors.

Needless to say I now have a couple black GCN memory cards that will be up for grabs. Don’t worry— they can be formatted to US in the memory card manager in the GCN bios.

Update on the Japanese import memory card data:

  • - Pokemon Colosseum had a 20 hour save with lots of good boys on it so I'm saving that.
  • - Kirby's Air Ride had 90% of the unlock board cleared so I'm saving that.
  • - The Smash DX photos were just of the "food" item. I can relate, pretty sure I did something similar out of curiosity as a kid wondering what the food items were supposed to be.
  • - There are saves for pikmin 1&2 that appear to be fully cleared, as well as various other games, all of which I've backed up.
I now have three black memory card up for grabs!

This is THE COOLEST mod I‘ve ever seen. I wonder if this method of piggybacking an ODE onto a console’s drive connector could lead to something for consoles that still badly need it like the PS2.

Such a cool idea. I would probably wait for one of these if I hadn’t already installed a GC Loader in one of my GameCubes. The drive in my original Cube is a bit funky these days so I didn’t mind losing it - but it would be nice to keep the functional drive in my JP console while also using it with an SD card of games.

Just for fun, here’s my collection of little game-playing lunch box consoles.

Notice something? There are no ports!

we had a closer look, and UNFORTUNATELY . This console is a physical WOODEN system, which is non-functional!.. the dream has been shattered regarding firmware and dumps… The console was made of wood with a plastic feeling/texture,

it was also much heavier then a regular Game Cube.

I never had a Gamecube growing up; I actually didn’t touch one until college when folks were playing SSBM at the dorm. Melee is cool, but we also played a bit of Metroid Prime which honestly felt like heresy to me (I didn’t really like it and kept negatively comparing it to Super Metroid like a hater).

Looked through this list for some suggestions here to try out on the Wii, will report back anything that impacts me significantly, but to start: Wow, Luigi’s Mansion is actually pretty awesome!

Played through the intro last night with my daughter and we both had a great time. There’s something so charming and creative about this game that I never understood from screenshots alone! Got to sit and jam with this banger as well: https://youtu.be/50uUuVyq5m4?si=nC8qGgrAW9oOQht7

Plenty of love for most of the games I would mention, but I’ll add on:

    • Kirby’s Air Ride, already mentioned, but I’ll specifically say play the “City Trial” mode four-player. An e-sport of a mini-game that spawned endless fun for my friends. IDK if there is anything else quite like it.

    • Bloody Roar: Primal Fury/Extreme is a fever dream of a fighting game. And made by the same dev studio, Eighting…

    • Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 (US) and it’s Japan-only sequel’s sequel, Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen! 4. A really approachable yet surprisingly deep fighting game, plus great sound/visuals/music. And then, like, no one ever made a serious attempt at a traditional “2D” or “3D” Naruto fighting game since (aside from a couple descendants on Wii which imo made some bad gaffes).

      • Acknowledgement: I’m somewhat involved in a community that plays the fan mod of the game, hit me up if you’re interested in playing the game online…

For some reason I sunk hours into the GCN Phantasy Star Online… sans modem… And Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles… single player. Yeah, in retrospect, my video game-liker development may have been stunted by being a Nintendo loyalist as a teen. I still like the controller though. What a big, inviting A button you have…

IDK if it’s fair to bring up Dolphin Emulator in this discussion. Some combination of Nintendo’s popularity, Wii being completely backwards compatible with GCN, and the timing of the two systems’ release seem to have made GameCube games ripe* for emulation and fan mods, and netplay functionality has given longevity to a bunch of games. So, I feel like emulation has wound up as part of the system’s legacy, in a way.
    * I have little idea how emulation and game modding actually works.

Dolphin is definitely one of the most impressive, well-supported, feature-rich emulators out there! In my mind, it sets a standard in terms of features that other emulators strive to live up to. I’d say it’s part of the legacy in that way

The Gamecube is pretty good imo
there’s some wacky stuff on there, like Chibi Robo, and also it has the best Fire Emblem game
