Games where the box art is a photo!

I own 2 that have probably never been photographed together until today:

(the tokimeki memorial box art looks delicious)

@ā€œseasonsā€#p42175 Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke (roughly, ā€œover my dead body,ā€) is a dungeon crawler RPG where the player controls a clan of warriors, cursed to die young, over several generations as they try to defeat the demon that cursed them. Aside from combat, the player must also manage the clans resources, and ensure a new generation is ready to take over when the curse kills their parents.

Was coming here to post this after the latest patreon-exclusive episode

The Singstar series really did not care about using unflattering photos

just was made aware of this from the [most recent famidaily](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_KsWP_CyPI)

found this while clicking the random button on moby games

that being said i think there's something fishy going on with that button. like 80% of the time i get popular or notable games. maybe it was just a coincidence that i got PokƩmon pinball. beyond oasis, valkyrie chronicles and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes in a row though

@ā€œē©“ā€#p125580 iā€˜ve noticed that too; it used to give really weird stuff more often, but now itā€™s rarely doesā€¦

GOD HAND totally counts, right?

And every single Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game. My favorite is THPS2 and THPS2 for the GBA. It's the same half pipe, but different days, but also incredibly similar outfits:

@ā€œē©“ā€#p125580 I left a comment on the mobygames forum when I noticed this and someone said the algorithm changed to favour entries with more data :frowning:

@hellomrkearns already beat me (by a whole two years) to Nakayama Miho Tokimeki Highschool and TM Network Live In Powerbowl, but not in showingā€¦

Chakusen Melody Damon for the Playstation. A game that has a collection of melodies you can apply to various mobile phone models from that time period. That cat is waiting for you to call them so they can finally listen to their sweet mobile phone melodies right now.

I only just now noticed @KennyL beat me to Chakusen Melody Damon (with a slightly higher res image too!). So one that Iā€˜m surprised I havenā€™t seen yet, unless I missed that too is:

Takeshi no Chōsenjō

This is admittedly a heavily manipululated photo, but this was my first thought. I have never played it.

@ā€œHyggeStateā€#p126573 I forgot that show existed, but I remember the billboard being plastered all over LA. What a perfect snapshot of a 2010s TV series that existed only on the periphery of anyoneā€˜s brain, but definitely still had a Wii game on the shelf, probably right next to Hellā€™s Kitchen for Wii

also kinda makes me wish this existed:

Pikmin 2 got different box art between the US and Canada.

Ours is the same as in PAL regions!

I think they used the same hand photo and changed the image on the card for all the Sega Card releases on SMS.

One of my favorite boxes: Kamaitachi no Yoru for the SNES. Itā€™s a candidate for ā€œmost iconic box artā€ in my book, as well ā€“ Iā€™d imagine if youā€™ve ever dug through shelves of second-hand retro games in Japan, you might agree. The game is a visual novel with real-life pictures as the backgrounds, but hereā€™s a fum fanct for you: The cabin on the cover is actually not the cabin in the game! (The actual location has become sort of a pilgrimage spot for Japanese retro gamers.)

Bumpinā€™ game as well ā€“ not to mention historically important as all get-out. Thereā€™s an English version ā€“ Bansheeā€™s Last Cry ā€“ but itā€™s a somewhat odd remake and localization, and whatā€™s more, itā€™s stuck on ancient versions of iOS and not at all easy to find a way to play nowadays. :pensive:

Here are a few from the C64 days. First, One on One: Dr. J v. Larry Bird:

Then The Great American Cross-Country Road Race. The hill seems real; not 100% sure about the car:

Finally, Jumpman (but not the Nintendo one):

@ā€œTaliesinMerlinā€#p128332 that last one might actually be an illustration!
