Gussun Paradise (YoYo's Puzzle Park) [PS1, 1996]

Been re-playing 1996’s wonderful Gussun Paradise (aka YoYo’s Puzzle Park) on PS1. Only released in Japan & Europe (I have a feeling I bought my copy at a car boot sale).

Kind of Bomberman × Bubble Bobble. Feels intimidating/confusing for the first 30mins until it clicks …then you’re in heaven! Brilliant.

I never have - looks quite complex for one of these maze platformers, I’m curious to try it out! Watching this video I can’t quite work out what the stage clear conditions are???

Stage clear condition:

  • Defeat/disappear all enemies

The most important thing to know is that there are two buttons:

  1. Jump
  2. Action: stun/kick/pickup/throw

You can’t jump down platforms, but you can throw in any direction.

It might look crazy but the pace of the game is entirely up to you. You can play it stealthy/defensive, or go in blazing/offensive.

Everything interacts with each other in numerous clever ways.

Lots of enemy types and stage layout requiring puzzle solving to get the bombs in the right place. Even more so if you’re going for the…secrets.

Now that I think about it there’s more than a bit of Bombjack and Snow Bros influence too.

I like the Gussun Oyoyo series. Check out my thread about falling-block-puzzle-games-where-theres-a-little-fella-on-top (full of old-timey forum broken links and images I should fix), which Gussun Oyoyo is a mainstay. Hadn’t heard of this spinoff, seems much more exciting, what with the Death Beams.

I had found your thread when searching to see if this game had been mentioned. It’s difficult to state just how much of a spinoff and how different a concept it is.

At least they give Death Beams to both CPU and player.

I’ve seen the credits in YoYo’s Puzzle Park (Gussun Paradise) so I’m currently replaying each stage to find the hidden bonus child (face/head symbol). Once I’ve got all of those I’ll unlock new game plus!

The crown symbol I think is for a perfect stage complete, but I’m not 100% sure!?

This game force thing looks like it was made in 1996 and would have a pea soup colored screen and most of the buttons would have no function - what a wild device!

GameForce Chi is an odd one for sure!

Horizontal controls, IPS 640x480, dual analogue, rumble, WiFi—I couldn’t find anything else that met those requirements.

Horrendous shell colours though. IIRC it was either this old PC beige, bright green, or bright orange.
